It makes total sense. If we expect the cap to explode after this year the future years of his contract are easier to take on. He doesn't have a ton of long term guarantees so adding some to the front end doesn't really hurt us.

So, they change Mahomes' roster bonus to a signing bonus, and the cap hit goes away?

RINGLEADER
03-12-2021, 01:11 PM
Anyone who knew anything knew this was the longer term plan. Veach found the “guarantee for injury” loophole first and now we can convert any bonus or salary into a signing bonus spread over 5 years. Eventually it will either catch up to us or the cap will catch up to the deals but the Chiefs have an enormous amount of potential cap space.

I'd leave Frank Clarks contract alone unless it was absolutely necessary.

I would, too...but with rollovers and whatnot, it really wouldn’t matter.

There’s definitely the think tanks that say this offseason with not many teams having $ means there will be some huge bargains in FA that we can take advantage of and it makes sense to free up as much as possible to get as many “bargain deals” done as we can before the cap goes back up and there’s a stupid feeding frenzy for players because everybody has tons of cap space after the new tv deals are in place and vaccinations mean stadiums are full again.

Yup, it's an ace we don't want to play too often. His base salary will be very expensive the next 10 years. So only so many times you want to keep piling on a few million per year every year. But with they usual circumstances of this season, makes sense.

We're still over by about $4.3M and we'll need about $7.5M for draft picks as of this writing. Even if PMII's restructure saves $17M, doesn't that leave us with only about $5.2M (17-4.3-7.5) ? Am I reading this right?

I think most fans don't understand the context. They see 2 Pro Bowl level tackles getting cut to "save cap space" because of Mahomes contract. Then they see the restructure and think "why not do that first to pay Fisher and Schwartz?"

They're missing the part where both are past 30, injured, probably past their prime, and not guaranteed to start.

Plus there's the Brady ball washers, which is always funny to read.

The injuries were why they were cut, not necessarily the salary cap.

The salary cap played a part but only because both were entering the last year of their respective contracts.

Yeah, if they were healthy:

1) KC would have beaten Tampa
2) KC would be rolling into 2021 with both on the last year of their deals, thinking about extending Fisher vs. drafting his understudy/replacement
3) Still be restructuring Mahomes and co. to make cap room for moves

Given their health status and age both these guys could linger on the market for a while. Could be that as we approach training camp we could re-sign one of the two for cheap depending on how they heal and how in shape they are. Maybe even both. Or maybe early in the season we could do that. Experienced depth with knowledge of our offense could be a good thing.
