1) I scouted Thuney as a scouting student studying his 2018 film. He was a really, really good to great pass blocker based on my eval.

2) This seems awfully expensive still.

After cutting two tackles and having nobody else at tackle but an unproven "rookie" who opted out I have to imagine they're still looking at a tackle, just not positive if that is Williams or not. Even if they just get Reiff that would seem to be a significantly upgraded left side of the line with LT Reiff and LG Thuney.

Here is the summary I wrote on Thuney based on film from 2018. So keep in mind he is probably even better now.

Starting OG you can win with who would be at his best in a Pass heavy offense that leans on Stretch Zone Run schemes with Screens and PA Pass Protections to best utilize his very good athletic ability. He can also be an effective Puller and Kick-Out blocker. Lacks the play strength to excel in downhill blocking schemes.

The Chiefs haven't had a solid, let alone spectacular, left guard since Brian Waters retired.

Thuney will automatically improve the center and left tackle positions because he's just so freaking good, so it may not be necessary to go all in on Williams.

Florio says 5 years, $80 million.

Indy has a ton of cap space and has an immediate need at LT.

They may be outbidding KC for TW and Thuney was the next best option...or Brett is signing BOTH and is just working the structure of the TW deal to make the most sense over the course of the deal. Maybe 5/100 with yearly roster bonuses.

Dude. The next time the Chiefs play a team with a damn good interior pass rusher this guy will erase them.

Watch the SB from 3 years ago. Thuney was more than holding his own against Aaron Donald

Man I really hope we can still get Williams or this will feel a little disappointing

Thuney is the second best lineman in FA, no? Right there with anyone behind Williams.

Thuney gives them some flex. Probably easier to get along with a rookie at LT if you have a veteran stud next to him. They also can still pursue a veteran upgrade at LT.

Shit, depending on how it's structured, they might even be able to still pursue Williams, too.

mkp785
03-15-2021, 02:29 PM
I don't disagree but I think that the left side of the line just got a huge upgrade, so if they decided to go with Reiff or trade for Dillard, the left side will be in the best shape it's been since I can't even remember when.

2010 maybe?

Trade for Dillard would be great. I am curious to see what Prince Wago can do too however I get it if they don't wanna risk Pat's blind side to a 6th round pick who they grabbed off the scrap heap.

Having a consummate pro next to a rookie LT is about the smartest thing you could do to protect your QB. I'm not advocating for a rookie LT but putting a stud next to him would be a 16mil/yr alternative to a 20-22mil/yr LT especially if the Chiefs have someone they really like in the draft.

Part of the value Thuney brings is he can play almost any OL position. LG is his best position but he played a lot of tackle last year. It gives us flexibility to keep adding to the OL and not having to worry about the position they are best at.

If we add Silverback, this will have been an elite FA period regardless of what other moves we make.

Another reason this is a critical piece in the next phase of our offense is that it allows Mahomes to actually exist in the pocket for more than 1 second without having to sprint out, scramble, or drop 15-18 yards.

If we can actually develop a pocket, it will limit the effectiveness of the opposing edge-rushers because the angles will be more favorable to our Tackles.

That's why this move doesn't make sense unless there is a LT signed too. For the money, I would have preferred to sign Linsley - almost $20 million cheaper over 5 years and fills a position that we needed more urgently. I like Thuney a lot, but I am really mixed on the move because it is so much money.

You know Veach. First he signed Thuney. Now, he will restructure the Thuney contract to get back some more cap space. Genius.

if you have a once in a lifetime QB you protect his blindside.....the money should have went there and not for an interior lineman in my opinion

Look at the best Saints teams. They had two of the best guards in the game, and prevented pressure from up the middle. Gave Brees a comfortable pocket. Good guards can affect outside rush, simply by allowing the tackle to ride the rusher over the top while the pocket is clean.

If we had a badass LT as well? Damn

EDIT:

I shouldn't have said best Saints teams, but at least the ones circa 2010, when they had Nicks and Evans at guard

RealSNR

If we don't land Williams, at this point I'd rather just draft another OT, see how things go, and experiment with kicking Thuney out to LT for a season. Would be pretty meh on Reiff. I've seen a bunch of Vikings games, and Reiff makes me soft.

"But with a great LG..."

Brian Waters wasn't enough to make Jordan Black not a huge giant piece of shit. Reiff isn't Jordan Black-level bad, but I wouldn't call him a big upgrade from replacement level. He's as meh as it gets, and if I could have Fisher on his old contract or Reiff on a cheaper deal, I'd rather have Fisher. Injury recovery and all.

Give me Sam Cosmi in the first this year.

LT: Cosmi
LG: Thuney
C: Allegretti
RG: LDT

That's going to get the job done. The left side of the line could be elite in pass pro, especially on play action.

there's nothing surprising about the projected Williams numbers. Thuney was not a consolation prize.

Veach has decided he's sick of bullshit play on the offensive line and is going whole ass on the problem.

Williams is still coming. It'll be shades of Roaf and Waters over there for the next 3-4 years.

Roughly what we gave for Mahomes? If the sure fire, can't miss, start on week 1 guy is available... Pull the trigger. This guy will be protecting the blind side of our half a billion dollar investment at QB for the remainder of his career. Who on the roster is more important to the long term plan than Mahomes himself? Keep Mahomes upright with time IN the pocket, and we're in every game.

What is this “pocket” you speak of?

What’s more likely:

Signing Trent Williams to protect Pats blindside

Or

Drafting an OT at 31 (or trading up for one) to start right away to protect Pats blindside in an offense that thrives when the QB has time to find the open receivers

I will be shocked if Silverback isn’t a Chief when it’s all said and done.
