It's just one of those deals where you get what you pay for. Chiefs are not giving much. Niemann is a young smart player but not a sure tackler or a physical specimen.

Occasionally he makes a perfect read and is in the perfect spot. He just needs to tie up some loose ends and be a bit more assertive, all around consistent. It's not a bad signing. He's still young.

Off topic: Why Dorian O'Daniel never blossomed is beyond me. Niemann stole many of his snaps, beating him out for PT. No idea what's going on there.

First, for Niemann, the phrasing of "re-signing" when he could have been original-round tendered makes me assume Niemann's deal will be a cheap one and his role will be as a core special teamer and a rotational linebacker in 2021 as second-year linebacker Willie Gay Jr. sees an increased role alongside starting veteran linebacker Anthony Hitchens. I know Niemann isn't exactly a fan-favorite and he absolutely shouldn't be one of the team's top three linebackers, but on special teams and in a limited role, he's a fine fit.

I'm guessing that the players you mentioned above did play because they did something in practice for the coaches that earned that playing time. If not, the whole team would quit on coaches that don't play the best players.
