What is it with our love affair of shitty back up TEs?

Draft one in the 3rd and be done with it.

Agree. No real love here, but if this guy is on the roster instead of Kaizer, I'm OK with it.

I approve this post. It's a low-risk, higher (than Keizer) reward signing. He's not the Kelce of the future, so let's see how it plays out. As I remember, we used him at times as the H-back, too. But I agree, I think we'll see a TE drafted.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone have stats on how many times Kelce lined up on the right side of the line versus the left? As I remember, Bell was a pretty good blocker and maybe we plan to use him to protect the new/rookie T a little.

Mahomes and Bell started getting a chemistry going before he left. He caught a TD in the AFCCG.

I like it.

I went to school with the dude as well hes a really good dude. Super humble. Remembered me from highschool last I saw himl, I was a bit surprised.

Bell was a very effective blocker and special teamer. I think the offense lost a little bit of juice last year without him and teams need guys like him that aren't afraid to do the dirty work.

His addition is even more important after the loss of Sherman.

Exactly.

His role was never to be a Kelce clone, he was basically a blocking TE/H Back.

Bell played 39% of the offensive snaps in 2019, more than 50% of the Special Teams snaps and he's a very effective role player.

Agreed with his special team contributions, and he seemed to be a tenacious blocker when given the chance. Plus he knows the offense and Toub's assignments, so bonus there.

My perfect scenario here is Keizer takes over Sherman's duties, we sign Jared Cook or trade for Ertz, and Bell is TE3. In lieu of Cook, I would accept a Brevin Jordan or Hunter Long type in the draft.

He’s pretty much exactly what we need in a TE2 and has proven it. What exactly is the problem?

I'm of the belief that as long as Kelce is playing at a high level, which seems to be higher and higher each year, the Chiefs will not invest heavily in a second TE because all it would do is minimize Kelce's contributions.

That he’s NOT a TE2 on a pass heavy, Super Bowl contending pro football team....otherwise...sure.

Nor should they.

A high end TE2 would be a waste of limited resources.

It would be complete waste of valuable resources for the Chiefs to invest in a TE that would take away touches and snaps from the best tight end in the NFL.

Why take the ball out of Kelce's hands?

Fact: The Chiefs have won the Super Bowl every year that Blake Bell has been on the roster.

Fact: The Chiefs did not win the Super Bowl in any year since Blake Bell's birth that he was not on the roster.

....right up until Kelce goes down with some injury, god forbid.

I'm not suggesting we break the bank on a TE2, but having a step up from Blake Bell or Nick Keizer isn't a bad idea, either. Kelce is essentially what makes this offense so dangerous minus Mahomes, and having a respectable backup is just smart.

I agree, but that's much easier said than done. Look what NE is trying to do to fix their TE problem.

The problem is people want the Chiefs to have a poor mans Kelsey as TE 2 - which in all honesty is rare and will only be found in the draft.

I like bring Bell back.

I’m the opposite on this one. I’m not cutting Kelces snaps or targets in half but having someone who can give him a breather and not get his ass beat every snap of the game could help.

Brevin Jordan or Tommy Tremble are my picks.

New England is going apeshit attempting to overhaul their offense as quickly as they can. I'm surprised how much resource they dumped into two tight ends.

How does he not fit the scheme? He's a good blocker and a decent receiver especially in the redzone.

What exactly does Blake Bell do better than him? And it's not like Bell or Keizer are long term fixes so why does age matter?

Archie Bunker
03-18-2021, 11:37 AM
We need a receiving TE to develop for sure but for us a TE2 is a blocker and special teamer. We would’ve seen Seals-Jones more last year if it was any different. Kelce isn’t coming off the field and we’d rather have another WR out there in passing downs than a another TE.

DaneMcCloud
03-18-2021, 11:43 AM

He's 35, he's slow, he's 6'7 and primarily a blocking tight end who's not an H Back nor is he some kind of special teams maven

So he's a blocking tight end who also gives you 300 yards receiving and 5 touchdowns a year.

Once again, how is that not better than anything Bell does? Bell has 500 career yards and 0 touchdown (1 in the playoffs).

So you think Blake Bell is better than Darren Fells? At what exactly?

No, I don’t. I just don’t think the difference is enough to even remotely care. I don’t want an old brokedick like Fells or Cook either. They clearly value Bell because of his familiarity and fit within the offense. I fully expect them to draft somebody to compete with Keizer and Bell, as Veach has already alluded to the fact that they’d like to get a legit TE2 behind Kelce. They’ve shown interest in Brevin Jordan which further proves this.

Darren Fells has a total of 21 TD's in 7 years and less than 1,500 yards receiving in total.

And he's 35 years old.

Since he has been mentioned 2 or 3 times in this thread...

Jared Cook - LA Chargers, 1 year, $6 M

Also -

Kyle Rudolph, New York Giants, 2 year, $16 M

I like Blake Bell but I hope he is the third TE for the Chiefs on the 2021 depth chart and we don't see Nick Keizer on the chart at all..
