2 AP Coach of the Year Awards

Pretty solid resume. Few have accomplished more.

Just couldn't win one with Kansas.

I guess that shows the disparity between an elite program and a not so elite program.

Sorry, had to get my mean comment of the day out of the way.

So if Kansas shoots better than 12-30 from the free throw line against Syracuse, then they become an elite program?

Roy and K are in the God tier of CBB coaching.

Self, Izzo, Calipari belong to a tier right below along with a few others.

The nice thing about Self is that he is consistent as fuck and us, KU fans, have never had to live through the occasional turd years like UNC fans had to with Roy.

Great post. However, UNC is clearly untouchable since they came out completely unscathed after the fake classes and diplomas scandal.

KU effectively has two titles during the Self era given that they also won in 2020 (AP and Coaches Poll #1). Can't be ignored.

So Memphis won in 08 then

Memphis shot 61% from the free throw line in 2008. They shot 63% in the National Title Game.

Kansas shot 65% from the free throw line in 2003. They shot 40% in the National Title Game.

That’s the key difference, but that wasn’t really my point.

My point was that I don’t see why you would think less of Roy or Kansas because of misses free throws in 1 game.

As such, I also don’t think less of that Memphis team for missing some down the stretch. They would have been a very deserving national champ.

By my calculations KU should have 4 titles. That’s the # of times they led the nation in SRS (points per game > average team, adj for SOS)

1957: 3OT loss in title game with Wilt
2003: loss in title game already discussed here
2008: sweet glorious victory for humanity
2020: stolen by the Chinese

False equivalency. The NFL had and has a postseason to determine their champion. In contrast, there was no such postseason in 2020 in the NCAA. As such, it only makes sense to determine the champion the way that has been done in college sports for the better part of a century. KU was the best team in 2020 and should be considered as such.

The NCAA definitely discussed their past failures. How do you give a team a title that is notorious for failing in the big dance. Besides, it's the NCAA TOURNAMENT champion. The NCAA doesn't award teams for beating up a soft big clank.

Oh that's not my Twitter, but I think we'd all agree it poses a valid point. The alternative to doing so would be not awarding a champion at all, which is the equivalent of erasing a season where 30+ games were played and one team was clearly superior to everyone else.

KU was the best team in the sport in 2020 and was recognized as such by the AP and the Coaches among others. There's little reason to treat them any differently than say, the 1987 Miami Hurricanes or the 1994 Nebraska Cornhuskers in NCAAF.

They weren't giving a title to team that was just busted paying players that beat up a soft conference and loses in the tournament every year for three decades..and they decided having no champ was better than that

Bill Self accepts the fact that they're not the 2020 National Champions.

“This would be the one particular year I’m all for it, without question, but I don’t even put any wishful thinking into that because that is not the way this is all intended to be,” Self said.
