I randomly befriended a former Duke player several years ago. He said the players hated Coach K and his public persona was all an act. The player was a McDonald's All American who never quite lived up to his potential at Duke, so it's entirely possible a lot of this was sour grapes. But I always disliked Coach K - and disliked him more after he supported shutting this past season down and cited Covid rather than Duke's mediocrity - and I always wanted to believe it.

Besides their advanced ages, Roy Williams and Coach K also probably recognize that college basketball is devolving into transfer portal madness with the elite talent bypassing the college game altogether (a trend that will accelerate if/when the NBA lowers their draft age eligibility).

That being said also it's dumb for Duke to hire the "get the bag of money to the player" guy rather than like, going after an actual program builder or xs and os guy like...Nate Oats?
