What salsas are you animals eating?

I live in buttfuck nowhere and the salsa selection out here is fucking criminal. Especially given the Latino population out here. Regardless, the little Mexican grocery store I was using had to close down. So ultimately I’m looking for a good salsa I can order online.

I bought some dried peppers I intend to make some of my own, but it will be a couple weeks before I can get a look at it and I’m sure it will take my dumbass several batches before I can get it right.

What do you got?

Important point here, they've changed their packaging. If you're looking for it in the supermarket, it'll likely look like Fish's pic above. And if it looks like BC's post, it could be older stock.

For me, I like the Green and Ghost Pepper because they're distinctive. The rest are good, but they kind of blend in with everything else out there.

But I've not run into anything I like as much as the heat and fresh flavor of the Ghost Pepper, but it might be too hot for many. It's on the higher scale of what you get in a Salsa, . . not nearly as hot at the concentrated extracts or anything, and very pleasant for me personally. But it is definitely hot.

Rather than trying to order salsa that you may or may not like, why not buy like 9 Roma tomatoes, a couple of jalapeno peppers, a red onion, a stalk of cilantro and a lime, then make your own to taste?

I realize that Pico de Gallo isn't for everyone but IMO, it's way better than nearly all store bought salsa in a jar. Plus, it's cheap to make so if you mess it up, you're only out a few bucks and it's easy to try again.

If jalapeno's aren't hot or spicy enough, try serrano or habanero's.

For myself, the Ghost Pepper is just the perfect mix of heat and pepper flavor. Not actual ghost pepper heat, but the flavor is on point. When people come over, it's usually the Habanero. Again, not true habanero heat, but still good flavor. Peach for the ladies...

I was actually a bit disappointed with the Mango Habanero, but I think only because I had tried the Ghost Pepper and there was such a big difference in heat.

And I also remember sitting down for some chips and salsa with zero expectation of kind of burning off my face. LMAO

It was more enjoyable the next time I tried it, just having that expectation... and IIRC, it was in a burrito with some cheese and sour cream to take the edge off just a bit.

Produce out here is hit or miss I’m not a big pico guy due to the cilantro thing (Baby Lee knows the science better than I do. I’ll defer to his explanation), but it’s on my to do list to make my own salsa after harvest calms down.

Yeah. Some of y’all are good for more heat than I am. I’m good for a fair bit, but one thing I’ve learned eating some of the authentic stuff out here is that while I’m better than most about handling heat, I still have enough honker whiteboard genetics that I’m not good for the big guns.

It's hard to gauge from person to person, but both the Pain is Good and the Mrs. Renfro's Ghost Pepper, for me they're in that sweet spot where every bite is spicy, but it keeps you coming back for more. It's hotter than you get in most supermarket, but you can taste the flavors, and if the spice doesn't knock you out, you want another, and another, . . . hot, hot, hot!! Oh, just one more. . . If that makes sense.

It's not so hot you take one bite and are out of the spicy game for the afternoon, running around for milk or yogurt, like with pure hot sauces.

Thought about buying it, but didn't.

Why? Cuz I'd have to go to the store for chips. The smart thing for them to do is also offer chips with it.

I don't like watery salsa and I don't like chunky salsa so what I usually do is buy a jar, strain out a lot of the excess water, and then throw what's left into a blender. Then I toss in a couple of chipotle peppers for flavor and blend everything till it has a nice even texture.

The salsa really sticks to the chip better using this method.

I am far from qualified to talk about it but I think there are different regions of food from mexico. Some outfits will have fairly bland stuff and expect the salsa to carry the spice load, others will have heartily seasoned food and milder fresher salsas. I'm sure there are a ton of other differences but those are the main differences my uncultured ass sees.

No locals make/sell salsa there if there’s plenty of Mexicans in your town?

Most of them just feed their families. There was a local gal that ran a little grocery store that she sold food out of. It was fucking to die for. Sadly the owner sold the building she was renting. So I'm out. Her salsa was pretty fucking hot but my god it was good.

Hopefully she finds a new place.

Homemade bud!! I make enough in July-August to last the entire year. You got a farmers market near you Bueh?

Plan on going down that road once fieldwork slows down. No farmers market. :(

Arriba! Fire Roasted Southwestern Garlic & Cilantro Salsa - Medium
Margaritas Amigos Restaurant Style Salsa - Medium

Those are two of the better store bought options I've found. I've been through a lot of types/varieties. Same wtih Bloody Mary bases.

Dillons in Garden used to Carry Arriba. I like the chipotle stuff. I didn't find it last time I was down there.

Do you realize the you live 30 minutes away from this:

I'm in Topeka now and we buy it by the case whenever we go back home.

I haven't. My wife ate there with some teachers and said the food wasn't great so I never went down that road. I probably should give it a try.
This is also good if you can find it:

Rather than trying to order salsa that you may or may not like, why not buy like 9 Roma tomatoes, a couple of jalapeno peppers, a red onion, a stalk of cilantro and a lime, then make your own to taste?

I realize that Pico de Gallo isn't for everyone but IMO, it's way better than nearly all store bought salsa in a jar. Plus, it's cheap to make so if you mess it up, you're only out a few bucks and it's easy to try again.

If jalapeno's aren't hot or spicy enough, try serrano or habanero's.

Thats exactly where I'm at, just can't do salsa in a jar anymore unless its a last ditch option... would rather make my own, or at worst pony up for some fresh pack stuff

I'm loving this herdez guacamole salsa. But I use it more as a sauce I guess for tacos and stuff. Pretty damn good and has a little spice to it. Their brand of regular salsa sucks ass though

Produce out here is hit or miss I’m not a big pico guy due to the cilantro thing (Baby Lee knows the science better than I do. I’ll defer to his explanation), but it’s on my to do list to make my own salsa after harvest calms down.

Yeah, I get that. Some people just don't like cilantro so when you make it yourself, don't add it. :D

Obviously, it's very different out here because in addition to all of the brands mentioned in this thread that are available at any grocery store, we have Mexican markets everywhere that make their own fresh salsas every day and for less than the typical jar of salsa.

With that said, I rarely find a Pico de Gallo that suits my taste. Some have cilantro, some don't, some use white onions, some use red onions and some even add celery(!) so I found that the only way I'm truly happy is making my own. Generally speaking, I'll involve my kids because they enjoy the process and eating fresh salsa a few hours after we make it.

However, the biggest advantage that we have here is that most of the Mexican markets also make fresh chips everyday and I gotta tell ya, there's nothing better than fresh tortilla chips.

There's just no way to get around it: They're a million times better than pre-packaged, regardless of the store bought brand.

I think it’s a genetic thing. Baby Lee explained it all one time.

Cilantro is the Spanish word for coriander. Many people have the hereditary gene that makes you taste soap including me. I am told you can substitute fresh parsley leaves along with ground cumin. even basil leaves but may change the flavor a bit.

Dane try Vallarta supermarkets. We have it in the Central Valley and a lot of their shit is over priced but their salsas, homemade tortillas, and beans w/queso is actually pretty damn good. I was lucky that my wife recently stumbled upon how to make chipotle style guacamole but slightly better and way cheaper as their guacamole at Vallarta is ten got damn dollars lol

Thanks, guys, Vallarta is my jam! I've been to their Burbank and N. Hollywood locations but N. Hollywood is the main location I visit because it's just one stoplight away from the new Business Costco.

I grab a couple of pounds of their seasoned chicken al carbon, fresh chips, 10 avocadoes for $5 bucks and several different salsas a couple of times a month. They're super cheap, even on common items found at Ralphs and so forth.

Their ceviche rocks, too. :D

Depends on what you like, but my extensive rankings of salsas available in the Dodge City area, not too far from you.

1. Tacos Jaliscos - Dodge City-(not the one in the mall, the one on Wyatt Earp) Very watery, and the temp rating can vary quite a bit per batch, but very tasty IMO. My favorite.

2. Tapias Mexican Restaurant- Belpre, KS (between Kinsley and Stafford)- Pretty good mix of tomatoes and sauce, VERY hard to find if you don't know it's there, but definitely worth the stop.

3. Tacos Chavas- Dodge City- This is a yellow food truck, they have Tacos Pastor that are some of the best tacos I've ever had in my life. It is usually parked around the Heartland IPA Grocery/Shell Station on Comanche St, I think its a salsa verde on the tacos, but I think you can get it on the chips too.

4. El Korita- Dodge City- Very cool $1 ala carte menu under glass 2 days a week (Wed and Thurs I think) mini tacos, flautas, decent red salsa with chips, a little salty.

5. Cant remember the name, and not on google maps, and i think the name changes like every couple of months, but South Dodge City burrito shop next to Johns auto bodyon S. 14th You have to specially request the green sauce, but they give it to you in a giant bottle and it is great on one of their super burritos.

6. El Charro- Dodge City- much thicker and tomatoey, but still decent. The portons here are usually larger than you can eat.

There is fantastic Mexican food there, it's literally the only thing I miss about living there. I sure don't miss the wind or the cattle smell. :D

Note- It's been a few years since I lived there so some of these might have gone under. do not go to Casa Alvarez in DC, they are routinely cited for food and health violations.

I was just trying out some ghost pepper hot sauce stuff from a local shop that's "crazy hot!" and what not, and the usual disappointment leads me to think companies need like an independent reputable taste test for such things.... so, you can actually say "Even [this guy] said it burned his face off!"... if not, of course, an official Scoville rating.

Of course, that's counter to the marketing scheme of saying things are crazy hot when it's really fairly mild relative to the serious stuff.

This is a great thread, I need to grab more of the Hatch Chile salsa and more Mrs Renfros, and try some others.

There is a restaurant in the suburbs, far enough away I haven't bothered so far as to go back there and interrogate them, but they had a salsa I wish I could replicate. But I haven't really run into anything quite like it.

It was mostly clear, almost like it was thickened with cornstarch [though I'm sure that's not it], but basically a syrupy consistency with little bits suspended in it. The heat and flavor was fresh habanero and cilantro. But then it had these little . . . pearls . . . of garlic AND AVOCADO. Like the size of a quinoa or tabbouleh. The garlic was roasted, so it was very soft, and both the garlic and avocado kind of 'burst' like dipping dots when you ate it.

Very tasty, at first you get the heat of habanero and the snap of cilantro, then you get the burst of garlic and avocado that made it less spicy and a little creamy. Fascinating.

I really don't how how they got so fine a dice of things so soft without it turning to paste. I assume they went to the trouble of freezing them first.

Back when Dinosaurs roamed the earth that was an El Conquistador restaurant. I don't know if that dude owned it or when it changed hands, but I've known the last two owners, so there are at least 2 since then. It's good to know the tacos have survived ownership changes.

Yea when he owned it it was El Con. Then he sold it because it wasn’t making much money. He let them have several recipes. We actually buy a dozen at a time. They are amazing cold. Perfect tractor meal. I thought it was funny someone mentioned elzarape sauce. I don’t know any restaraunts in Gc that have great sauce. Hell “on the border” medium is much better. However if you ever have to eat at elzarape the smothered pablito is amazing. The smother it with green sauce.

My go to place in Garden is La Estrella. Place is kind of a dump but I can’t get enough of their tacos, man. I could hammer that every day. I like theyre salsa but depending on how many jalepeno seeds they jam in there it has the potential to melt your face off.

Goddamn it. Now I’m hungry for some especialias tacos. Grumble.

This shit was the best of the bunch. It was REALLY fucking good. Expensive, but good. Couldn't manage free shipping.

I like the 505 Salsa line, type that in Amazon. All of them are good. The flame roasted green Chile is great.

Mrs. Renfro's. No matter what your spice level, she got you covered...

I get the Mateo's salsa from Costco.

This was the best of the tamato based salsa. Really good rec here.

ignore the labels. they are both extremely mild.

I couldn't get into this stuff. This could definitely be me, but I wasn't into it.

My friend Mr. Doggity is the biggest foodie I know. He says this is his favorite in KC:

This stuff was pretty good. For whatever reason I didn't like it as much as the Mateos, even though I think it was really really close in flavor. Good story to go with it though. Definitely don't feel like a piece of shit buying this stuff.

This here shit is GOOOOOD. It has to be the small tomatoes. It gets mealy as all fuck with bigger (cheaper) ones. It ends up being kind of expensive, at least in my part of the world, at my grocery store.

It's pretty light on heat, even with 3 jalepenos with NO seeds out. For the next round I bought a serano to throw in there. If that doesn't work, I'll throw in a chipotle or 2. That seems to be hotter than a green jalapeno.

Anyway, if you're into making salsa, give this one a look. It's fucking good.

you can pretty easily make your own salsa tbh

Just get a 14 oz can of tomatoes, maybe a quarter or half a large onion, salt, a jalapeno (deseed it if you want it less spicy) some garlic and lime juice from 1 lime. chop up everything then blend it all together using whatever blender you have and there you go. it'll be better than most of what you'll get at the store

I haven't tried the 505 yet, all I can find here is the medium... might have to find their hotter stuff online.

If nothing else on the Renfros, you can always start with like a breakfast burrito with sour cream to see if it'll burn your face off.... reviews and what not sometimes scare me into thinking something is far hotter than reality (their ghost pepper is actually very spicy though), so I'll start slow.
