There were so many good players that they could've taken that would have sprinkled in some top-6 offense for them, but they didn't.

Defense isn't bad at all, but I suspect they'll make a trade or two and goaltending will be good for the start.

I hope Ron Francis is going to work on the offense within the next three weeks.

Well, it's certainly not going to be $6m/year moving forward. I could definitely see him being OK with $10m or so, though, which is definitely high but isn't really superstar money. The dude has said many times that he cares far more about winning than about the money.

That said, the Avs need to get it done in the next couple of years or his patience might start wearing thin.

Vegas desperately needs the cap space to resign some players (Nosek, Janmark, Martinez) so having Fleury was a luxury they couldn't afford. What is wild to me is that the reigning Vezina trophy winner is traded for absolutely nothing due to so many teams not being able to afford Fleury's 7 mill cap hit.

I think the NHL needs to seriously evaluate their cap system and make some changes to allow teams more flexibility. Something along the lines as 1 compliance buy-out per 2 seasons with no cap implications would be something maybe the NHL and NHLPA could agree on.

The mistake he made against the habs in game three was one of the worst in playoff history and we never recovered...i'm glad he's gone and we can possibly move forward with panda and also have cap room. Farewell Flower..it's been one hell of a ride.

Ovechkin signed for nearly $50 million and it's a bit strange that it could be considered a discount at $9.5/per, yet him and Backstrom now account for something like 22% of their cap hit.

I think through his age 32-33 season it'll be fine, after that it won't look as good. But they should have a cup by then, assuming they keep MacKinnon, Byram, etc. I expect Grubauer will be back as well.

I really want Saad in St. Louis to replace Schwartz.

It's not FAR off, but in comparison, Grubi ended up with a .900 average in our series against Vegas and looked god awful in the last two games. I'm just not sure I trust him to be THE GUY yet.

I think it's going to take time for the Avs to find a capable replacement. No one who they'll bring in will be more than a tandem goalie currently who has performed well(Kuemper). I think losing him hurts more now than losing Landeskog would.

Flip-side is they have enough cap to bring Saad back.

In a Twitter thread, Glendale said it informed the Coyotes this year will be its last at the arena that opened in 2003.

The city said its decision was due to “increased focus on larger, more impactful events and uses of the city-owner arena.”

The Coyotes confirmed in July that they were in discussions with the city of Tempe on a development space where the franchise could put a new arena.

Tempe also confirmed the request for proposals (RFP) on a spot in the East Valley.

Based on the site’s location, the Coyotes are highly interested in this development opportunity and will be responding to the City of Tempe’s request for proposal. Given our determination to remain in the Valley for many years to come, we are actively working to identify the best long-term home for the Coyotes, our devoted fans and this great community.

I feel like the Avs early season has some similarities to the Chiefs early season. Lots of good teams, and their injuries/COVID/suspensions haven't helped.

Hopefully they can kick it into gear when November rolls around and the schedule softens up.

Yeah, nice strong start for all of one game, but of course the Blackhawks are kind of a mess. It would be nice to get back to full strength to get a feel for how Kuemper is really doing, since the defense is giving up a lot of great chances right now.

They just got outworked the other day, but also nice to see some good play from the bottom offensive lines.

Enjoying ESPN+ so far, too... no issues and I've read a couple of Avalanche games have been on ESPN+ and not blacked out locally.

I did like seeing the period markers on nhl.tv when I'm behind in a game, but I'll trade that for being able to skip commercials on ESPN+ (and of course the price tag).

Yeah, they haven't lost consecutive games since November 3rd/6th and there are all kinds of great stats on how many times they've scored 5+ goals or even 7+.

Yeah... and I've seen some say the season will be a dismal failure without a Cup, which of course unfair to some extent. The divisional losses have definitely turned up the pressure though to the point where even a WCF loss would be tough to swallow.

Contract-wise, they at least have this season and next before having to resign MacKinnon and replace Erik Johnson (on top of Kadri being a UFA at the end of this season).

Peter Forsberg had three goals and three assists as the Colorado Avalanche exploded for seven goals in the final 22 minutes to stun the Panthers, 7-5, last night in Sunrise, Fla.

Forsberg’s unassisted goal with 1:31 left capped a four-goal outburst in the final five minutes as the Avalanche roared back from a 5-0 deficit that included Pavel Bure’s hat trick.

Adam Deadmarsh, Chris Drury, and Milan Hejduk also scored during the Avalanche’s final flurry, in which they scored four goals on their final eight shots. Claude Lemieux also scored as Colorado remained unbeaten in its last 10 road games (8-0-2).

Florida had built a 5-0 lead late in the second period on the strength of Bure’s 11th hat trick. Bure scored a shorthanded breakaway in the first period, then added two power-play goals.

Florida led, 5-3, with just over five minutes left, but Deadmarsh brought the Avalanche within one with a power-play goal at the 15-minute mark and Drury tied it just 41 seconds later.

Yeah, Sakic is great at plugging holes without overreacting. Cogliano has been around forever. Not familiar with Lehkonen, but he has 13 goals/29 assists.

Picked up some defensive depth whether Byram is back or not, plus the forward depth they needed (hoping Landeskog is back).

Would have loved to pick up Toffoli, but the Flames gave up a lot... and that's just the EA Sports stack-a-roster in me. Nick Leddy would have been fun to watch on this team, but of course don't really need him.

Saw people pining over Jost on reddit (much like we do with Chiefs JAGs), but Sakic's never been afraid to move guys and he hasn't exactly taken the next step.

The WC WC race took a turn with Vegas losing 3 of 4, and losing to the Devils the other night... now really needing a win against the Caps tonight.

It would be pretty nostalgic for the Canucks to make it... they were so easy to hate back in the day. I think they won multiple Presidents trophies, but except for one Finals appearance, just wasn't a good playoff team at all. The Avalanche also took the division from them a few times, and once or twice on the last day of the season.


Granted, 20 years later the Avalanche need some playoff success so they don't become the same team.

An interesting note on that.... the Wild lost to the hapless Yotes tonight (LMAO) or else they could have wrapped up first round home ice on Thursday.

So, no matter what happens tonight, the Wild loss guaranteed the Blues will have something to play for against Vegas on Friday (whether Vegas does or not).

Goalies are like kickers. They're all !@#$ing headcases except for a handful of the true greats.

You name a goalie, no matter how great, and unless he's a HoFer, he's had a year or two where he's just eaten shit. And Binnington is weird even for a goalie - so you're looking at nuts squared.

That said, I'm not sure Binnington has EVER been that great. He wasn't a highly regarded prospect. He doesn't have much of a pedigree. He wasn't great the year after the cup run.

He's probably a fairly average goalie. He'll have some good years and some bad years. He'll win some series he should lose, he'll lose as many he should win.

He's probably a roughly 91% save percentage sort of goalie who shouldn't have a 6 year deal with 5 more still in front of him. Armstrong hasn't made a lot of mistakes in his time in St. Louis - but he made one here. Ideally the cap will start to creep up with the NHL getting involved w/ ESPN again. As it does, that deal will be slightly less painful.

And maybe a few years down the road when some of the $$$ has been paid and the Blues have accumulated some draft picks, you can attach a 2nd round pick to him to get out of the last 2-3 years of the deal.

Or they can just continue forward w/ an overpaid but probably average goalie.

Yup.

The Blues know as well as anyone (see the Brett Hull years) that one line can always be shut down. If you can't roll at least 2 scoring lines while also sending out elite special teams units, you're largely drawing dead.

You may steal a series if your goalie catches fire and badly outplays theirs, or if they're slow to figure out how to deal with that single superstar line. But by the 2nd round you're usually drawing dead. It'll just exhaust that star player/line getting through even a single series and then it will all come crashing down.

Tonight reminded me a lot of that series. That 2nd period could've gotten away from us. Minnesota was far sharper and really had some high-quality chances that period. By all rights they could have/should have tied it up there and then who knows how the 3rd goes.

Not taking anything away from Husso, but Allen won a game in OT on the road in which the Wild outshot the Blues by like 20+ shots (the Wild had 50+ SOG). Husso concerned me on some plays (he was playing way out of position) but played fantastic overall.

Tonight was just an ass whooping and the Wild lost their composure.


If the Blues don't take dumbass penalties (both Perron penalties and Bortuzzo's were dumb), I think the Blues can win this in 5. Curious to see if the Wild turn to Talbot though I think Fleury played OK.

Heh, yeah he got traded to the Oilers last summer and at 38 still sees ~20 minutes/game. There's probably some kind of Mike Yeo Degrees of Separation, but don't believe there's a direct link.

Yeah, it was refreshing to see Clifford get the game misconduct last night... the boarding itself didn’t look awful since the Leaf was so close to the boards, but it was clearly unnecessary and had nothing to do with the play.

I'm not sure he even gets 5 minutes for that in the past... we'll see what comes of the hearing.
