View Full Version : Chiefs Underrated thing about the Chiefs in the Dorsey/Veach era: trades.

I had a conversation and it came up that the Chiefs win all their trades.

They sure seem to, right? What trades in the Reid era, which of course includes General Managers John Dorsey and Brett Veach, can we definitively say we lost?

I think the closest you can get is some of the trade-ups in the draft, in particular the 2nd round, under Veach that ended up biting us in the tail and I think you can argue we lost those, but I think that's hard to evaluate.

As far as player-for-player, pick-for-player, or player-for-pick, I can't think of a single trade during this era where you can say "absolutely they lost that one for sure."

Maybe two seconds for Alex Smith? Hard to complain a ton about that, though.

The Alex Smith trade was fine.

It kept us from drafting a bust QB that year. He did help us reclaim the Division.

Plus, we were able to flip out of him for Fuller and a third.

Probably not if you just subtract Frank Clark, but that’s only half the equation.

It depends on what we use that first round pick and all that cap space on.

-Book is out on Tyreek trade

Nothing wrong with two seconds for Smith. Denver just gave up 2 firsts, 2 2nds, a starting TE, starting D-Lineman, and a backup QB for Alex Smith.

I kid (sort of).

So, what does the book say?

Speaks trade was certainly lost. Clark is a tough one because he was so good in that Super Bowl run.

We won the Peters trade.

According to a new report from The Athletic’s Nate Taylor, the Kansas City Chiefs have traded for Houston Texans CB Lonnie Johnson Jr., who recently expressed on social media that he was leaving the Texans. Kansas City sent Houston a conditional 2024 seventh-round draft pick for Johnson.

Since Lonnie Johnson did not make the team, I really doubt that the Chiefs owe Houston anything since it was a conditional trade.

I might be splitting hairs here.

I see that as a bad pick and not necessarily a bad trade.

We traded 54 and 78 for 46 and 100. That isn’t necessarily a bad trade.

We just whiffed horribly with that pick. To me, that’s more of a negative in Veach’s “draft” column than his “trade” column.

I just double checked the trade value chart. We lost that trade by 20 points (the equivalent of a 6th round pick). Not a great trade, but still more of a bad pick than trade.

Maybe the Frank Clark trade was a push.

We got one good year out of Clark. We have also been stuck with a huge albatross around our necks contract.

Seattle got DE L.J. Collier who has done nothing. Seattle traded the 2nd round pick it got from Kansas City in 2020 for two other picks and ended up with guard Damien Lewis and end Alton Robinson. Alton has been a backup DE with 44 tackles in 2 years and Damien Lewis has been a starting guard.

Maybe Seattle won because of the money that they saved in the trade.

He helped us win a Super Bowl, but it’s hard to argue that we won the Frank Clark trade

Let's examine this.

Why do we make trades? To improve our team.

Why? So that we can win a championship.

Frank Clark was a huge part of a culture change on defense. Bringing attitude to the defense.

His playoff run was phenomenal. Ended every game with a sack, and more importantly, talked MAD SHIT on Derrick Henry who had been taking the Souls of opposing defenses to the tune of 200+ rushing yards, and helped hold Henry to 67 yards rushing. After Henry was stoned back to back on 2nd and 1 and 3rd and 1, he never saw the football again in that second half.

Talked MAD SHIT down 10 in the superbowl, even when things looked grim. Frank was shouting yall know what we bout to do. We bout to send yall asses home.

It helped keep the defense in the game. Playing hard instead of folding when the offense kept turning it over.

Has Frank been worth the money? How much does that championship mean to you?

It means everything to me. I have friends and family who died before they could see the Chiefs win it all again. It validated over two decades of loyalty despite soul crushing losses year after year.

Frank was a huge part of making that happen. He was brought in to help win a title. And we won the title.

He hasn't been great since, but we absolutely won that fucking trade.

This one from arrowheadaddict.com

DeAndre Washington only played ten offensive snaps for Kansas City before being traded to the Miami Dolphins. The Chiefs parlayed him and a 2021 seventh-round pick into Miami’s 2021 sixth-round pick. Washington had a bigger impact in Miami’s backfield, but Veach squeezing trade value out of him is notable.

That sixth-round draft pick became quite important.

It was the 207th overall pick and one of two that the Chiefs sent to the Jets in exchange for the 162nd and 226th overall picks that year. Kansas City selected tight-end Noah Gray and offensive lineman Trey Smith with those two picks. Arguably, Veach flipped Washington into Smith, a solid guard who started all 17 games in 2021 for Kansas City. That is a huge steal.

LDT wanted to play. He got to play with Jets. LDT was closer to home. Much easier to go from New York to Montreal. Chiefs had Trey Smith. LDT would just have been a sad face on the bench. Chiefs also saved $1M,

I think what you can say about veach is that he’s outstanding and filling a need. If there was a tiny flaw it’s that I wish he’d anticipate. We went from a brutally bad OL to a stellar one in a single off-season. We went from a One man and one dimensional WR corps to a deep group. Have a sinking feeling we’ll be doing this same overhaul of RBs by next year.

We shouldn’t always wait for the dam to break before we fix it.

But holy hell is he good once he knows what he needs to fix

Veach is very good at trying to win every year without selling out to win in any specific year. The only year you could argue he crossed the line (Badger and Clark) it paid off...

It will definitely be a win or push in my mind but I get raybec thinking it's a potential loss if OBJ doesn't re-sign. Oweh looks like he could end up a pretty good end and Marco Wilson started last year at CB for Arizona (the 4th rounder in the deal Bal traded). If Cleveland ends up a starting LG for BAL it gets pretty narrow. We'll have to see it through another year.

Gotta disagree with kccrow on the Dee Ford trade---considering he played he played only a handful of snaps for the 49ers and was injured the whole time, and we got a starting LB in Willie Gay--that is a total win.

Veach is very good at trying to win every year without selling out to win in any specific year. The only year you could argue he crossed the line (Badger and Clark) it paid off...

Yeah, we got real lucky. He's one hell of a gm.

I just think sometimes he makes these moves a year late. again it's 100% nitpicking. But I think many would argue that last year, for example, we should have known that our receivers were a poor fit for how defenses were adjusting to us. Just as the prior year it shouldn't have taken mahomes taking cannonballs to the chest in the super bowl to realize we needed at least some help on the OL. It wouldn't have taken much. We just needed a single decent interior OL or a single short route WR in each of those years.
