Another of my guys!!!

This dude is skiiiiiiiiiiiiny.

But he's crazy athletic and added a bunch of weight his last season. If he keeps that trend he could be a fascinating guy to watch develop. Long and twitchy and plays stronger than he weighs (again, not saying much for a guy who's built like a 2 guard right now) but all he needs is weight and time, IMO.

Real nice pick.

My take in February.

Just looking around at later physical freaks and came across BJ Thompson out of Stephen F. Austin.

Super super SUPER raw, scrawny as hell (6'5" and maybe 240 lbs) but I think that's exactly the kind of guy you use a 7th rounder on and see if you can bulk him up. I mean that frame sure looks like it's 260+ waiting to happen and if so, he's just so damn explosive. He has really athletic feet and plus agility.

Big time project player, don't get me wrong. I don't expect him to contribute this year and hell he may not do much the next. But that kind of length/quickness just isn't easy to get and if you can just add a little weight there and refine some of this hand fighting, you could have a real dangerous rusher on your hands at a minimal cost.

Surprised he went in the 5th but not at all disappointed - I like him and would've been bummed if someone grabbed him in 6.

Chiefs selected Stephen F. Austin EDGE BJ Thompson with the No. 166 overall pick in the 2023 NFL Draft.

Thompson had 24.5 sacks in six years of college between Baylor and Stephen F. Austin. He ran a 4.58 40-yard dash at his Pro Day per Dane Brugler's The Beast. He as dismissed from Baylor on account of a failed drug test in 2018, but rebounded with Stephen F. Austin and teams kept away from him in 2022 as he produced just five sacks and 6.5 tackles for loss.

Rotational DE.

Frank Clark was basically our only speed rush option last year and that pretty much says it all. No other DE on the roster last year had the type of burst and speed to bend around the edge.

Now Brett gets his Frank Clark replacement in FAU and then follows it up with another speed rushing option.

I love it. Big time improvement to the DL

Dump Herring or Kaindoh, or both I guess. I think the advantage he, hopefully, has over Kaindoh is he has some bend AND I reckon they'll just have lower expectations. No need for him to ever develop into an all-round DE, he can just be that electric situational rusher on obvious passing downs

True - but you can't play 1st or 2nd down in an even front at 245 lbs. you could pigeon hole him on 3rd downs and it's a fine use of a 5th rounder, but you gotta try.

Just look at his frame - he can carry 265 and still look like a WR. He's sooooooo lanky.

BJ Thompson (6-5, 240, 4.4 speed, 40-inch vertical, 11-3 broad jump)

But he was not invited to NFL combine and his stats from Pro Day -

STEPHEN F. AUSTIN LUMBERJACKS (MARCH 21)
EDGE BJ Thompson

Height: 6-foot-5 3/4
Weight: 243 pounds
Hand: 10 1/8 inches
Arm:34 5/8 inches
Wingspan: 82 inches
40-yard dash: 4.61 seconds
Vertical: 37.5 inches
Broad: 10 feet, 5 inches
Shuttle: 4.46 seconds
Three-cone: 7.06 seconds
Bench: 13 reps

I am happy with the pick and he is a very good athlete, but he seems to already have this mythical quality that we all hope will make him a great player for the Chiefs

I think the only official time was 4.61 coming from his Pro Day, yet pretty well-known football media people are coming up with much faster and better times.

I have no idea where those numbers came from other than a creative agent that was trying to help his client.

It will be interesting to watch Thompson in preseason.

Thompson took a top-30 visit with the Chiefs, which makes him the second player in this draft class to have had a pre-draft visit with the team. He had pro day numbers that rivaled one of the top athletes in this class in Georgia DE Nolan Smith with 4.4 speed, a 40-inch vertical, and a 135-inch broad jump.
https://chiefswire.usatoday.com/2023/04/29/kansas-city-chiefs-2023-nfl-draft-instant-analysis-pick-166-sfa-bj-thompson/

Chiefswire.com reporting info about BJ Thompson that does not seem to be true.

Smith was a 4.39 and BJ was a 4.61. (Not close) Smith broad jumped 128". Thompson was 125" (close). Smith has a vertical 0f 41.5" and Thompson 37.5".

Maybe Thompson had some private workouts where his numbers were better.

Dude looks like a small forward. Very spidery. Love the athleticism though. I feel like he needs to weigh closer to 265, but as a pass-rush specialist maybe he's fine at 240. Spags is going to love this guy. Especially if he can put on some weight and still be very quick/athletic.

I wanted to draft DeMarvion Overshown because he was a converted safety, could rush the passer, and drop back to cover running backs and tight ends, and give Spags a lot of flexibility.

This guy is 3" taller than Overshown, and a little heavier, but still looks like he could be the same type of player.

I haven't watched hardly any college ball in a couple years because of starting my new business two years ago, so no idea who Overshown is. Not familiar with BJ either, for that matter. So apologies for my ignorance of either of these guys.

But the highlight tapes are very interesting. Not sure he'll ever be a 3-down DE, or a 3-down anything, but that length combined with that athleticism could be really exciting for Chiefs fans on passing downs. I mean, as a bonus, this guy is probably going to swat as many passes as the rest of the DL combined, lol. He could lead the DL in INTs as well. Just tip drill everything to himself.

Hope this guy pans out just to see him do crazy athletic stuff in red-and-gold.

With additions like this I keep think the Chiefs went into this draft with a particular situation in mind.

Late in games when the running game goes out the window, you want speed on the EDGE's. Frank Clark filled that roll the last few years but that was about all we had. With the guys we have now we could rush 3 and drop 8.

Thompson-Jones-FAU (It only takes one to break through)

On the back end we're loaded with in the secondary and could play 4 safeties and four CB's. That's going to be very tough to score on.

Chiefs could beat you with Mahomes or this 3-4 package.

Every time he tries to convert speed to power I just want to pat him on the head like an angry toddler....

"Awww - that's just adorable. You keep at it, little buddy..."

I mean the moment those arms get extended, the rush is done. He goes straight up, loses leverage and can't do anything to re-anchor because he's just not big enough.

But again - duh. I don't think anyone would argue otherwise regarding his performance to date. The question is can he add weight and maintain the explosion. That's the nature of 3rd day picks - they aren't gonna be fully formed unless they're punters or fullbacks.

Early on though, I wonder if you couldn't get some value by lining him up alongside Jones and forcing the OT to get back fast. Just send him blasting up the arc and get that OT hustling back into his set before he can give Jones that chuck. It would clear the Gs outside shoulder so now the G is left really with trying to guide him inside for C help or with trying to take him head-up.

Which kinda gives Jones control of the rep.

But yeah - right now he's a guided missile or a decoy. Even those of us who are big fans of the pick have never argued otherwise. At best right now he can use the get-off to get the OT back and then set up that spin move if he catches one of them cheating.

He doesn't have to win 20% of his reps to have an impact. He can get 4-5 sacks this year being little more than he is right now and play a complementary part in the DL writ large picking up a couple more.

Something that he can learn to do quickly to add value is getting his hands in the air at the right time to block the pass or obstruct the view. In games against Denver and Houston, or other shorter QBs, that is a plus.

I can already see him being effective from the edge on a WR screen or a pass to the flats. Make the QB take an extra beat to lob it over him, and give Sneed enough time to come in and clean up.
