I’m sure he could have spent the next few years fighting with guys on the bubble and making $15k per week at minimum (practice squad salary for players with 2+ seasons accrued).

I hope this is the best decision for him long-term.

Word on the street is the Chiefs signed him just so they could mock him all day for being drafted ahead of Mahomes. He couldn't take it anymore and retired.

John Ross was always a track guy and 'never' a football guy. As opposed to Tyreek who was clearly a football guy who could run track. And my guess Andy's playbook overwhelmed him and what was expected of him. He read the writing on the wall.

So any time you want to scream at Veach for drafting Hardman instead of some other great WRs, just remember that the GM who supposedly knows WRs took John Ross instead of Mahomes.

I mean, it'd be one thing if Ross turned out to be Mike Williams-ish good. But... no. Not like this.

It's the NFL thing to do man, info, intel, etc. Every team does this from time to time. BTA, some do pick up a talented guy to see if there is any reclamation project is in order.

He always struck me as a guy that likes being on a team for the money but doesn't really care to go out on the field and get tackled.

I'm always curious about what NFL players do after they leave the league.

You've got a handful of guys who are fantastically rich, and they obviously just go fish or maybe do motivational speeches.

You've got a bunch of guys who come in at low-NFL salaries and play a year or two, and they obviously have to go get a real job. If they're smart, they've got a head start on retirement savings, but they may also be broke with a nice car.

Then you've got guys like John Ross. His career earnings are $19 million. Take away half of that for taxes and agents, and his take home was probably $10 million. Let's assume that he was reasonable with his spending, but he did some splurges like buying a house, buying his parents a house, etc. Let's assume that he's got $8 million in the bank right now, which is probably a bit optimistic for a lot of NFL players, but let's go with that assumption.

$8 million provides a steady cash flow of $320,000 a year if you assume a standard 4% withdrawal. That's not insane money, but obviously is a pretty good income, especially if your house is paid off.

But the guy is 27 years old, and that's a big deal when it comes to retirement. At normal inflation, let's assume that costs double every 20 years. So when he's 47, that money will have the buying power of $160,000, and when he's 67, that money will have the buying power of $80,000. And if he gets to 87, it'll have the buying power of $40,000, plus he won't qualify for Social Security.

So he's in an odd position. Maybe he's got $8 million in the bank, but he can't live like he's got $8 million in the bank if he just wants to go fishing. He's going to have to ramp down to an upper-middle class life immediately, or go earn a little money somewhere. That money seems big, but he's going to have to make some compromises and plan well if he doesn't want to go get a 9 to 5 job.

If playing with Mahomes doesn't inspire this dude to play at his best... nothing will. Hope he didn't squander his millions.

Good analysis! It looks like a pretty good start in life to me.

At that age I too was looking for a new career, but I went back to school and then got a new job.

John Ross had four years at University of Washington, so I assume he could at the very least go back to school for a short time and then enter the job market.

I know there are NFL players that have spent their money and aren't prepared for life, but they really have a good chance to have a pretty good life.
