I know we've talked about Peacock, but this is bs.

Chiefs playoff game will not be aired locally
News-Press NOW JAN 9, 2024 Updated 9 HRS AGO

In a move designed to push more viewers to its streaming service, NBC announced that the playoff game between the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs will be shown mostly on the network’s Peacock service.

The game will be on played Saturday, Jan. 13, at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium in Kansas City. Game time is at 7 p.m.

The NBC affiliates in the two teams’ home markets also will air the game. In Kansas City, the game will be shown on KSHB and it will appear on NBC6 in Miami. Since St. Joseph is considered an adjacent market, the game will not be shown on KNPG.

According to a story in The Athletic, NBC paid $110 million to air the game and it’s the first time a playoff game will be streamed. Peacock has streamed regular season games and The Athletic said the Dec. 23 game between the Buffalo Bills and Los Angeles Chargers pulled an audience of between 7.3 and 8.4 million viewers.

“Of course, we’re disappointed in NBC’s decision,” said KNPG General Manager Stacey Hill. “Our viewers have come to rely on us for Chiefs’ games and Chiefs news. Unfortunately, this decision was made by the network and we’re obligated to abide by it.”

Hill did say that News-Press NOW’s stations, FOX26 KNPN, NBC21 KNPG and CBS30 KCJO, will carry several playoff games in the coming weeks. This year’s Super Bowl, played Feb. 11 at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas, will be broadcast on CBS30 KCJO.

I sent this email to the Chiefs via a general season ticket email address:

This is a travesty. Not for me, I'll manage. In addition to being a STM, even if I were to stay home I'm able to get the subscription to watch if I needed to.

But this is a disservice to your community of St. Joseph. Imagine all the dads and granddads who have been with you since the 70's and 80's, diehard Chiefs fans who have been with you through all the highs and lows. They have spent many afternoons and evenings at Arrowhead over the years. They watch their Chiefs faithfully. But maybe they don't have a Smart TV. They probably don't have any sort of internet connection. They definitely don't know how to navigate a subscription with Peacock. And that's who you are forgetting. In an age when we are rightfully focused on equity, diversity and inclusion, this decision is at it's core, disproportionately impacting your aging Americans. And I hope you understand the impact of this.

Sincerely,

STM #16630339

They did respond, basically saying it's out of their hands. The cash grab at the expense of fans is pretty sad, imo. I also emailed ownership at the local media affiliate which owns the local broadcast stations. He pretty much said they wish they could make it work as well, but Peacock bought the rights for $120,000,000 and it's out of their control. I appreciate the dynamic of having local news and having stations dedicated to the St. Joe market, but it sucks when it comes to rights for NFL broadcasts such as TNF on Amazon and now this.

should they have to?

I see a lot of back and forth on facebook...peacock is only $6, quit b1tching, blah blah blah.

I wish people qould stop and think about others. I'm actually going to a Chamber banquet that unfortunately was scheduled at the same time and usually has 800 in attendance in St. Joe. They'll have the broadcast on. I also have the option of staying home and getting the game through Peacock on my smart tv.

This isn't about me, as I mentioned. This is impacting people that don't really have the voice to speak up and say anything, or do anything about it.

I think having an NFL game on Peacock is beyond stupid, but this is going to be the norm going forward. The NFL is a money making machine. They rarely miss an opportunity to fuck over their fans in order to grab more money. It's why Goodell makes ~$65MM/yr.

I have a friend that already subs to Peacock, so we are heading to their house to watch. It's a good excuse to get together with friends, drink beer and watch the Chiefs slaughter some porpoises :)

If it was the afternoon game I'd love to go to a bar. The night game will end around 11:30 here. I'll be in bed.

I always hate these night games. Especially when it's so cold.

They can't. People in St. Joe don't have internet.

actually, that is another good reason. One of the regional priorities for Northwest Missouri and other parts of the state is high speed, broadband connectivity. I'm on United Fiber in St. Joe, thank you very much. But this blackout also applies to other rural counties in Missouri and Kansas.

Market status
St. Joseph ranks 201st out of 210 media markets designated by Nielsen Media Research; it serves several rural portions of northeastern Kansas and northwestern Missouri. However, during the analog era, KQTV provided at least grade B signal coverage to much of Kansas City and Topeka; the channel 2 signal traveled a long distance under normal atmospheric conditions. Its digital signal still has considerable penetration in both cities despite operating on a short transmitter tower. In turn, stations from Kansas City, Topeka and Omaha are receivable over-the-air in portions of the St. Joseph market and are also available on some cable and satellite providers: Suddenlink, DirecTV and Dish Network carry Kansas City's KSMO-TV as the area's default MyNetworkTV affiliate and KCPT as the area's default PBS member station. Kansas City's WDAF-TV (channel 4), which was displaced as the default Fox affiliate by KNPN-LD on Suddenlink and Dish Network when that station signed on, continued to be available on DirecTV until June 30, 2012, when it was replaced by KNPN. As a result of the heavy signal overlap between the Kansas City and St. Joseph area stations, St. Joseph could be considered a sub-market of the adjacent Kansas City market.

TBN owned-and-operated station KTAJ-TV (channel 16), which mainly serves Kansas City, became the second television station licensed to St. Joseph when it signed-on in October 1986. However, KQTV remained the market's only local commercial station until June 2, 2012, when the News-Press & Gazette Company (owned by KQTV's one-time owners, the Bradley family) signed on KNPN-LD as the area's Fox affiliate.[15][16][17] News-Press & Gazette (which also owns local news and weather channel News-Press NOW) later signed on KBJO-LD (now KNPG-LD) as the area's CW+ (now NBC) affiliate in March 2013 and KNPG-LD (now KCJO-LD)[18] as a Telemundo (now CBS) affiliate in 2014.

I also imagine, this is an anomaly to other parts of the country. How many markets of 45K TV households, 60 miles away from a major broadcast market have their own local group of network affiliates? My guess is that St. Joseph is stand alone in this scenario. It's great for getting local news, stories and weather. But it's disappointing no one is going to care enough to try and do anything about it.

Especially since they could just pirate everything for free.

But seriously, this is why I never feel the slightest bit guilty about pirating. Screw em. They should welcome it, it's literally the only time I ever watch their commercials. Because it's a pain in the ass to switch to something else and switch back when the commercials are over. Or at least more of a pain in the ass than it is when I'm watching DirecTV.

If they can afford it and it is available in their area... Direct TV Stream is a good hybrid between the functionality of traditional cable/TV while providing easy access to the major streaming platforms.

Prime Video, Peacock, Apple TV, Disney+, Max, etc. all show up on the channel guide like regular channels (although to watch them you have to have an account and sign in with your user name/password on the TV).

I don't know why this is a shock. It's on in the local market, St. Joe is not the local market, its no different than Des Moines.

I think it's awful to do this with a playoff game, but it's big business. And bitch all you want but its working for the streaming services like Amazon and Peacock. There will be more, not less of this, mainly because this is how the NFL can keep making more money.

And you want to know what's worse than this shit? Its when your cable provider like Medicom, Dish, or Direct TV can't work things out with the locals and you can't watch a game that on broadcast TV. That's fucking criminal.

Spend 5 bucks and get Peacock. You will get this game and you can also watch some Hawkeye Woman's BB.

This sucks for the fans. Peacock has a free trial month so anybody with a device can watch it for free, but I'm sure there are still a lot of people in St. Joe and elsewhere without smart TVs or a decent way to watch the game.

I wouldn't be shocked if in 5 or 10 years, nothing but local market games were on broadcast TV. The NFL has probably seen it can just sell the rights to broadcast its games to these subscription services and make even more than the TV networks offer them.

But even then - NBC has bid on a game only to show it on Peacock. So CBS would probably put games on Paramount Plus, ABC would put them exclusively on ESPN+, etc.

The NFL has priced a lot of fans out of attending games, maybe watching games is next.

I'll probably be done with the NFL after Mahomes at this rate anyway. The product is already watered down garbage, the gamed are too heavily influenced by inconsistent officiating, prices to park/attend are a joke, and now they're whoring out to any stream with a pulse...way to go!

“As we celebrate mediocrity, all the boys upstairs want to see / how much you’ll pay for what you used to get for free.” - Tom Petty

All games used to be over the air for "free" - the price being having lots of commercials.

Enter cable, 50 years ago, with the promise of content (like HBO) without commercials, just pay a fee. An alternative way to pay for content.

Cable morphs into watching OTA content with commercials AND paying a fee for the privilege.

Games move to ESPN, NFLN, Prime, and now Peacock, to extract even more money from us.

It's like the frog in the slowly heated pot eventually getting boiled alive.
