But he definitely sucks.

Nice young and cheap depth signing. Can run - never felt like Minnesota tried to use him right.
Bengals is where TE's go to die, so not gonna freak out over last year.
Guessing this is nothing more than a "camp body" flier-type deal.

Yep. TEs are a bitch to find these days. The pigeon dude from Illinois looks like an old fashioned Y on the line TE. 6-5 270 34-35” arms for the nice catch radius. That would be a nice mid round add to take Bells spot. Problem is there’s not a group of 3-5 guys like that in these drafts.

Best I can say is that I'm not convinced he's that much worse than Fant and somehow Fant got paid real money.
I suspect Irv will get some deal in the $2-3 million range tops (and with nominal guarantees). So 80% as much player for about 33% as much money? Eh - whatever.

Fant being 6-4 250 with the 33 1/2” arms automatically gives him a chance to compete on the line at the Y. He can get off the line and he has the ability to be a competitive blocker where as Jr and Gray are at a disadvantage in who they’re being asked to block and you have to put them on the move to get the best out of them. I don’t like having two short arm types on the 53. If so they better keep 4.
But that’s just the reality of what’s available. It’s like a short armed DE like Danna. Loop and stunt him and he’ll be more productive
Plus Reid knows what he’s doing and won’t expect him to do what he’s physically not capable of. They even had orson Charles for a year and had him practice with the RBs as a FB. If he earns a spot they will scheme him properly. But I think he’s definitely that F TE/hback etc. If anyone can coach him up it’s this staff

365 yards and 5 touchdowns
Those are stats Smith had in one 13 game season which is better yards and td totals than ANY TIGHTEND we've had bar Kelce since Mahomes became a starter. Oh, and HE'S ALSO the fastest backup TE we've had too.

Comeback Player of the Year.
He was set to be an RFA I don’t know if they tendered him but Gaithings the PS kid they signed to a futures deal. Very very similar ht weight and arm length to Fortson. In that WR/TE hybrid mold. I’d probably bring Fortson to camp for the minimum with no bonus. Even if just for one of the veteran spots on the taxi squad. But staying healthy is a must and he has had terrible luck there

I like this signing. As the #2 or 3 on this team that utilizes a shit ton of 12 and 13 personnel, Irv could be a sneaky good weapon in certain situations. He won't have the attention on him here that he did in Minnesota or Cinci, and he could exploit that.

This could end up being an underrated signing. I remember a New Heights episode with (I believe) Mahomes and they mentioned how Andy brags about how good of a TE coach he was. If he can earn more than Grays 1-2 targets per game, and do more with them then well... its a business after all
It just feels like Gray is protected and schemed too much, like we need more of an active playmaker in his spot... it will be a camp battle to watch for sure

interesting pick up. Watching just a couple highlight clips, he looks like a smooth route runner. Seems to have a good understanding of where to sit down in zone. Shows decent hands in traffic. Looks a little short (6'2"/6'3"?) but might be just because I'm watching on my phone.
PFR shows that his catch% is over 70% (nice) and his success% until last season was really good: over 50% (was with CIN in 2023).
Might be another under-the-radar great signing.

It just feels like Gray is protected and schemed too much, like we need more of an active playmaker in his spot... it will be a camp battle to watch for sure
Kelce, Gray and Smith in 13 personnel may cause some issues.

Underrated signing.
Chiefs know how to use TEs.

I agree this is an underrated signing. I saw him playing in Minnesota several times. He was pretty good. He certainly did not meet expectations in Cincinnati. He does have some injury concerns. But his best year when he got five touchdowns he certainly eclipsed anything our back up tight ends have done.
If this improves the chances of being able to pace Kelse.
Yeah, I'm in the underrated signing camp myself.
