Quick Google search says Darren Waller (!?) is the highest paid tight end at $17M/year.

So if this is an extension for 2026 and 2027 it would be for something like $35M+?

He should really be paid like a top 3-5 wide receiver. I'm assuming this is still a discount to that.

A case study in career paths… Tyreek vs Kelce.

Tyreek wanted to get paid, forced a trade and gets to spend the rest of his career crashing into Tua’s ceiling.

Kelce took less to remain on a championship team, has won multiple Super Bowls, hooked up with Taylor Swift, etc.

Advantage Kelce.

Kelce didn't "take less". He's a TE, one of the lowest paid position groups in the league, and at one point, he was the highest paid TE in the league until Kittle and Waller etc got paid very shortly after.

Tyreek was sort of doomed by his actions in college. Never gonna be a big money endorsement person with that type of ugly domestic violence in your background. Probably hard to get a celebrity relationship with that kind of background as well. So you try to squeeze every dollar you can from your NFL career on the field.

There’s a high likelihood that this move backfires on us a bit; but even if it does, you just have to charge that shit to the game. He’s done so much for the franchise and never once held out, squeezed us for an absurd payday, etc.

He’s one of the most underpaid players in NFL history, along with other great tight ends such as Gronkowski & Tony Gonzalez. The elite tight end market is drastically undervalued compared to elite receivers.

Right, he could have tried to pull the Jimmy Graham move and argued that he played significant snaps at WR to squeeze us for bigger paydays and never did, at least publicly. I have to assume he didn’t privately either because we almost certainly would have caved.

Yeah but the elite TEs get plenty of endorsements. Gronk never touched his NFL salary while he was playing. He lived off of his endorsement money. He talked about it in his book "“It’s Good to be Gronk."

Just goes to show how important it is to manage money properly.

While I would have liked Kelce to continue to play for cheap I totally get it. Kelce earned his salary from all the years of being underpaid. Glad he will retire a Chief.

It's a pretty good structure for that reason (and has some similarities to the way they structured Mahomes's contract). If I'm interpreting it correctly, he'll have new guarantees that kick in each year to protect him in case of injury, but the Chiefs can get out of it in a year or two if needed. The "rolling guarantees" structure seems like the perfect way to give a key player some protection but also ensure the club isn't royally fucked if anything crazy happens.

At least, that's what it sounds like to me.

Below are some quotes from Veach. I could see them doing 1-year deals with Travis if he wants to keep playing beyond the 2025 season.

“Every now and then you have one of these guys that are outliers and certainly Travis is one of those players," Veach said when asked how much longer Kelce, 34, can play. "Today we had a chance to get out there in Phase 2 [of the offseason program] and guys were out there running around, and Travis was the first guy in line, and I mean he looked like he was 28 years old.”

"The odds of someone playing this far into the thirties are very low, but it does happen, and it happens with just unicorns in the profession, and Travis is one of those and we'll certainly celebrate this with him and hopefully we can ride this thing even longer. So, we'll just have to wait and see. But I've seen no signs of [Kelce] slowing down and everyone notices the kind of postseason he had, and he just found that extra gear and these special ones, these special players are always able to find that extra gear…If anybody could do it, Travis can.''

Now if he'll just marry swift and take half her shit he'll have made a real haul this year.

The fact that AJ Brown gets paid nearly twice as much as Kelce is a joke. It's not that tight ends are paid too little and is more that WRs are paid double what they should be. Jerry JAG Jeudy is on more than Kelce LMAO

I'd take Kelce on my roster 11 times out of 10 over AJ Brown

Glad something nice could happen for Travis Kelce

Kelce didn't "take less". He's a TE, one of the lowest paid position groups in the league, and at one point, he was the highest paid TE in the league until Kittle and Waller etc got paid very shortly after.

Up until today he did... he was the 54th highest player in the NFL last year and the 4th highest paid TE.

If he took the Tyreek approach earlier in his career at his peak value/performance he could have absolutely demanded more.

Finally starting to (hopefully) get some clarity. It sounds like there's no added time on this at all - just a redo of his next two years.

<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">Just confirmed with the agent that Travis Kelce’s contract is not an extension through 2027, but rather a renegotiated 2-year contract that replaces the final two seasons of his previous deal in KC. <br><br>Kelce was set to earn $30.25M, but can now bag $34.25M, $17M of which is… <a href="https://t.co/gJtZ31JmT6">https://t.co/gJtZ31JmT6</a></p>&mdash; Spotrac (@spotrac) <a href="https://twitter.com/spotrac/status/1785058631014060184?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">April 29, 2024</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script>

The Chiefs just signed a 34 year old whose showing signs of wear and tear to the highest contract at his position

And yet I feel like he's still criminally underpaid

Fantastic offseason for sure! Glad to see 87 will be with KC through the end. Seeing him in any other jersey just wouldn’t be right.

When did the WR market inflate like this? The Adams contract?

It seems like it only takes 1 blockbuster contract (and the cap rising every year) to fuck up the market.

Yeah, agreed 100%. If he were a WR with his numbers, he'd be getting over $20 million/yr AAV easy peasy. As a TE, he's deserved to be the highest paid at his position for years now. If Veach/Hunt had decided to pay him $20 million/yr AAV for his last two seasons, I'd have been fine with that.

If we threepeat the very first thing that will happen on the post game stage is he'll grab the mic and promise a fourpeat.

Or better yet.... Repeat the threepeat

Doesn’t seem like much of a raise for his reception and yardage contribution. Heck, his girlfriend makes more in a couple days work than his entire pay raise.

It’s a 20% raise. They could have left it alone. The market sucks for tight ends, but it’s a pretty valuable weapon if you can take advantage of it like New England did with Gronk and Kansas City is doing with Kelce.

So Kelce was on contract for two more years but now hes on contract for 4 more years? Im not exactly sure I knew if he had 1 or 2 years left on his current contract...would like to clarify but going forward he's under contract for 3 or 4 more years?

He was under contract for 2 more years. Now he's still under contract for 2 more years, but he's got more guarantees and a little pay bump.

As far as I can tell, the "extension" talk was a complete misinterpretation, though it's possible that was caused by some void years or something weird like that. The actual contract hasn't been filed as far as I've seen.

It's going to be nice seeing the middle of the field open more because the defense has to respect our downfield game with Brown and Worthy....
