what does everyone think about this field turf?

Its popped up around college stadiums.
The Devilrays were(I believe)the first to use it. I thought it was real grass, but a friend of mine was telling me it was a new surface called field turf.
I know Nebraska, Washington(Seahawks) and Washinton St. play on it. Not sure if anyone else. I guess its alot softer than regular turf. Much kinder to the knees.

Down here at SMS, we just replaced our old worn-out turf with FieldTurf and it is WONDERFUL. It is soooo much softer, and it really does look like the real stuff is down there.

This is the first I have heard of it..... I assume that it also slows the players down more than regular grass if it is so soft?

From what I`ve heard about it, it plays just like grass. If you see it on TV its difficult
to tell the difference.

I heard an extensive radio interview about it around a year ago. As I recall, they try to mimic almost exactly the cushioning and feel of grass. They have several layers of different types of padding before you get to the top 'grass' layer. The 'grass' is made of two different blade types which poke out from the foam layer beneath. I still prefer grass for outdoor stadiums since I like football in mud and other less perfect conditions. I think it's awful that they play the SB in domes, it should be played in god awful weather like Alaska in January http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

The Seahawk and Husky players love the new turf. They say it is slower than Astroturf, but faster than natural grass, also their joints are not sore after the games like they were with astro turf.

Everything I have seen or read is positive, now if they would make the teams use it. I assume it can be put inside. Philly is the worst, but Detroit, Minnesota, Dallas, and the others are right behind. Amazing Emmitt Smith is still walking, much less playing, same for Barry Sanders.

Jeff, the plan ius for natural grass in the new stadium, however they could change it to thie field turf stuff it they like it that much.. Personally, I hope they go with real grass, I want to see some mud! http://www.ChiefsPlanet.com/ubb/smile.gif

Joe - I guess I didn't know that they were building an outdoor stadium. Is it going to have a rood that closes over it, or is it completely outdoors all the time?

KCRed - That is the question I was wondering about, can they put it inside. They do some layers underneath it, like sand and the such, so it might make it hard to use the stadium for anything else.

Paul Allen and Holmgren are Strongly against moving out of the afc west, not sure if it matters, but they will put up a fight.....Joe

Joe - I really don't think they have much of a choice, it just makes too much sense. Plus you were the last ones as part of the AFC West, and the fact that basically no other team in the division really considers you their main rival and never have.

Actually the Hawks were the second expansion team to go to the AFC West. Remember the one year Tampa Bay experiment in 1976?

Let's hope Seattle stays. We need that team to buffer the Chiefs from hitting the bottom of the AFC West.<P>
