Columbus Sailor Football...

Tonight was our season opener. This year's varsity team is the same team that went undefeated (9-0) two years ago as Fresh/Sophs. Everything has been leading up to this season. Working out all year long, two-a-days in the summer, camps, and long, tiring practices everyday after school.

We are extremely athletic team, but not real big. Actually, I'm the biggest guy on the team. We do have technique, and we do have a lot of heart. This year, we moved down from 3A to 2A. We also got new, and cooler uniforms too.

So tonight's matchup was against Olewein, a much bigger 3A team.

And we smoked them. 56-13. It was one of the best games I've ever seen. We were sound all the way through our starting seniors to some backup freshman that even played. I'm absolutely confident we are the best 2A team in the state and will go undefeated again, but I'm really not supposed to say that.

Oh well. We rule.

Well, just a little update. If any of you Iowanians have been following high school football closely, you'd know that my Columbus Sailors are ranked #8 in the state in 2A. It's cool, but it's nothing to where we're going to be a the end of the year - 1st.

Also, our quarterback, was named Courier Prep of the Week, so if anyone reads the courier sports, that's my QB and friend on the front page.

Going into this game, we were ranked 5th in the state. Tonight we played North Fayette. Ranked 4th.

In the first 7 minutes, they scored 21 points. I was sick and frustrated. By halftime, we had narrowed the score down to 28-20 I think.

In the second half, it went back and forth. We couldn't stop their run until the last two drives, but by then it was too late. With 45 seconds left, we were not able to drive the ball down the field much, and we lost a heartbreaker 49-41.

Vince Lombardi used to say that his Packers never lost a game, time would just run out on them. That's how I feel tonight. This really hurts, especially because of how hard we fought back.

I just moved to Sioux City from Cedar Rapids three months ago. I started hearing the talk about Waterloo Columbus and Marion and I was absolutely blown away.

I went to Cedar Rapids LaSalle for 2 years before they merged with Regis to become Xavier. Even though we never played Columbus or Marion, I remember playing those guys in basketball as part of the good ol' WAMAC conference.

All the talk here is about Heelan (yet another Catholic school). They're in the top 10 I believe.

Things were looking grim. After starting the season off with 5 straight wins, we had lost three in a row. One loss was to an 0-6 Osage team. Spirits were low, and our playoff hopes were on life support. In order to get to the playoffs, two things needed to happen. 1.) We beat South Winn tonight. 2.) Union (6-2, and who we've beat) needed to lose to Clarion (5-3, and who we've beat)

South Winn was 1-6. We had to be focused, and treat this game like it was our last. With that in mind, we come out firing, and after a little t-storm break, ended up with a 34-8 win.

And with about 3 minutes left in the game, we hear the announcer (The "Voice of the Sailors") announce a North Fayette victory. I looked up knowing he would give the more meaningful score.

"And it's a final in Clarion. Union - 6." He hesistated just enough to drive me past the brink of insanity. "Clarion - 33."

Words can obviously not describe the feeling of knowing that your team, the team you've killed yourself over with 20 some other guys, has made it to State playoffs. It was incredible.

Our first playoff game is on Wednesday. Is a whole nudda ballgame y'll

Well now, we haven't won a playoff game in a little over in hour. We beat some Valley team tonight, 17-9. Despite what the score might suggest, it was an easy win. Our next game is against North Fayette next Tuesday in the UNI Dome. North Fayette was the team that beat us earlier this year for our first loss. Revenge.

Tonight, North Fayette was given their first loss...yes, by my Columbus Sailors. We didn't just beat them, we blew the hell out of them. 38-14. We're in the 2A Final Four now. And we don't have practice tomorrow, and our next game is on Monday, which means no school.

I'm not sure. My guess is because of all the games that are needed to be played in the dome. Every team in the playoffs plays at the UNI dome, so that's 4 (games) times 5 (conferences)...20 games - just this week. I'm guessing some teams played on Fri.
