View Full Version : Sutherland Lumber sucks!

I have installed more than 2000 Directv systems. I use 5 - 1/4"X 2 1/2" lag bolts per install. I've been buying them @ Sutherland for 17 cents each. I stopped at an Atwoods (regional chain) today and they were selling them for $1.19 per pound. I bought 175 of them for $6.43. 3.7 cents each. Is Sutherland that far out of line on other stuff?

Nah - Sutherlands is usually pretty competitive. There's one up here that you can buy a 10% off coupon for $5. You get 10% off everything you buy for a year. But, you have to know about it or you're screwed. Most of the others have 10% Seniors discounts on Tuesdays. You should take advantage of that one.... ;)
Also, Sutherlands runs a special during the Chiefs season. 5% off for every sack the Chiefs have that Sunday - this discount is good on Mondays only and you HAVE to know how many sacks KC had. Last year, I ate up that 30% discount when we had 6 sacks against, uh - whoeverinthehell it was....

They can damn well afford to hand out those little pissy discounts. They've been screwing me by 75% for 6 years. Just on a little item like lag bolts, I've overpaid by $1400. That irritates me a smidgeon.

Caveat Emptor, scippio. The only thing you can do now is to screw lag bolts into the manager's tires.

$1400? I have $976 based on 4 lags per dish at 2000 installs. You can buy everything cheaper in bulk. I'd wager that if you bought 2000 dishes at one time, you could have saved a helluva lot more than $976.
You'd shit if you knew how much some of these stores were making off you and I. I drop $10k+ a month between Sutherlands/Home Depot/Lowes and other various suppliers. If I had my own warehouse full of these supplies, the building and land would be paid for in savings over 3 years.

You probably would have blown that $1400 on liquor and lap dances anyway.

Read the header again. It's 5 lags per dish. That's 10,000 lags. I got screwed by 13.3 cents each. More than $1300. On friggin lag bolts!! Criminal, I tell you. Oh, yeah, you mentioned bulk buying. I bought $6.43 worth. Bulk Hell!!

WOW! I'll bet they wouldn't have done that back when DT and Niel Smith were playing. Things could have been real cheap!:)

Heh heh. Pick me up a box, would you?
Talk to a Sutherlands manager next time you're in there. You'd be surprised the clout the weild. He ain't gonna give you $1400 but he may concede a fat giftcard in order to retain business with you.
Are you also using a Sutherlands credit card in order to get their 3% rebate?

Fvck their manager. I'm not going back. I'd be happy to fax you a copy of my receipt so you can take it to your guy and say WTF. With your volume, they may be screwing you out of a new house.

Why don't you just go back to bitch?
1. It will make you feel better.
2. If you do get a $100 gift card, you can buy a cool tool or something.
Then, you don't ever have to go back.

Good idea. But I hate to bitch. I just use the most sincere form of protest, they never see me again. I'll try it and let you know what happens. Do you want this receipt? You can beat them down with it. Let them know you are paying attention.

No thanks. I beat them down enough. One time I was so pissed at them, I had the manager personally deliver a roll of insulation 10 miles away. Heh heh. The very next day, I got $50 off my lumber order for another issue entirely.
2 weeks later, I cussed the freaking lot manager because he nearly stuck his forks into the side of my truck coming around a corner and had the nerve to tell ME to slow down. Wow, I was soooo pissed over that one, I was tempted to fire him myself. After I cooled down, I called and apologized for taking it out on him, but he still screwed up and he knew it.
Sutherlands is okay, but they aren't usually my first choice. Their lumber is always problematic because most of it is exposed to the elements. I get a lot of my stuff at Lowes, but by taking advantage of price matching.... They'll match Sutherlands price and beat it by 10% - that's pretty good considering their wood is twice as nice.

What a wishy washy post. Yeah, they do me right....Oh, no they don't. Is there an Atwoods in your area? They're more of a hardware store than a lumber yard. With your volume, I'd sure look around. I'm brilliant, aren't I?

I know. I'm a flaky kind of guy. I'm not aware of any Atwoods, but I'll look. One place I try to avoid is Ace. Those bastards probably charge $.50 per lag. Another one to avoid is 84 Lumber.

What are you whining about? I figure you save way more money then that when you just use the cable companys ground and or outlets instead of providing them yourself.

I wouldn't touch anything a cable company did. They only hire idiots and pay them poorly. No, I do my own work. And apparently you don't know the difference between then and than but what can I say, you are the poster boy. You write a very poor post and you probably do very poor work. You would be doing youself a favor to shut your ****ing mouth.

Ok so you were buying per bolt then you bought per pound? I learned really early when building my own house that I can buy 50 pounds of nails for what 8 pounds cost when you grab them out of the bine (or per nail) it totally sucks ass and the guy ringing it up (who I knew personaly) didn't tell me a damn thing. I went to 2 other lumber yards and it was the same deal. Just ask...anything nail, scew, bolt, hanger is always jacked up if they open a box and dumped in a bin.

At most Home Improvement centers. Lumber is sold at or below cost. Their profit is made on hardware and fasteners. Most of the time at over 50% profit. If you want lag bolts, you should do research and buy bulk. If you found the bolts at 3.7 cents each, you should go back and buy out their stock. They forgot to change their prices on all metal products. Metal prices have almost tripled in the last 6 months.
