View Full Version : How many different spyware, AV, ad block, etc. programs are you running?

I cannot believe how many programs you have to run these days just to be able to surf with some speed.

I'm running:
6 different spyware programs (not all at once)
1 spam
1 AV
1 cookie control
2 ad-blocks. One for pop-ups and one for banners and other types
1 trace cleaner

I'm a missing the perfect program that will do all of the above without slowing down my computer to a crawl like Zone Alarm Security Suite and Norton does/did?

I'm searching far and wide for one that will clean my favorite website of the memyselfvIrus

Ignoring it doesn't work due to the quote strain that helps it replicate itself.

i've had good luck with norton av...

i use adaware and spybot periodically and have win patrol running all the time...

i use the google toolbar's pop up stopper, and it works just fine...

i did have to run the spyware programs after i installed the google toolbar, but everything is working well now...

of course, i have a router, and that seems to help too...

Ah, but what one CHOOSES to see is what one SEES...

stop expecting technology to do for you what you lack the will to do for yourself. :p

I've never installed a single spyware/adware program. And, yet, somehow I've never had a problem with spyware.

I wonder how that works...

You obviously have never downloaded freeware or been to a porn or hacker site...

not that I would know ANYTHING about the last two. :loser:

Damn, people, she asked a serious question and some folsk have to use it as an opportunity to slam. What's really amazing, is that if just about anybody here were to meet Denise without knowing Denise, you'd probably get along with her just fine. Hell, I bet she can be downright charming in a real world enviroment.

Denise,

I run Windows XP SP 2, which has a popup blocker, Spybot, AdAware, and either Norton AV, AVG Free, or Trend Micro's antivirus depending on which computer I'm on.

I hate to say this, but you aren't a friggin idiot.

Actually, the big reason I think is you don't have a

1) Wife that doesn't know sh1t about computers
2) A kid that screws up your computer
3) All of the above

I run Mozilla Firefox, and AVG Anti Virus. I don't need a spyware detector.

I've heard from many novice's (we call em N00BZ around here) that they run multiple AV and spyware programs. Stupid IMO (an uninformed technician/net admin who knows dick about comptuers).

ENDelt, or whoever is interested...here is the latest build for Firefox 1.0 RC...testing stages only, but worth a look. I'm about to install it. I heard you can integrate an RSS feed in to it...very cool.

SypwareBlaster, http://www.download.com/SpywareBlaster/3000-8022-10305680.html?tag=lst-0-1

You run the program once and it prevents you from getting most all spyware/cookies. It doesn't need to run in the background, it just blocks the stuff you get via active x.

Then get SP2 if you use IE or just use firefox to block popups and use windows firewall (it works well enough at hiding your box from trojan port scans).

Run adaware/spybot every couple weeks just in case.

That's all I do and I never get anything despite some heavy internet traffic and being on one of the most notorious hacker target networks (MIT).

Good luck!

I've met you, too. Sorry, I'm just trying to raise the level of civility. I guess I'm just another knucklehead trying to get us all to get along like one big happy family...

I've never really needed one. Obviously, my Macs don't need them, and I've never really had a problem on my PCs, either. I attribute this mostly to using FireFox instead of IE.

At this point, I can't really imagine a single reason anyone would choose IE over FireFox, other than the fact that they already have it and are too lazy to download FireFox. It's got a much better rendering engine, plus a ton of features most people would love, including tabbed browsing and popup blocking.

SpywareBlaster is great. Since I started running it all of the spybot scans have been totally clean so I dumped spybot. Now I only run AVG and spywareblaster. Occasional Ad-aware scan just for sh!ts and grins. MeMe if you could cut down on the bondage porn you wouldn't need any of those programs. :p

But outside your world (we call em GEEKS around here) they have other high paying jobs that don't require them to know "dick" (or care) about computers.

I don't think this should be the users responsibility in all enviroments. In corporate enviroments, it's usually the IT staff's job. But, SOMEONE should be reconsidering the use of IE as the primary browser by now. Not only is it a piece of shit rendering engine, but it's problematic when it comes to viruses and spyware.

It may not be your job, but it'd be helpful to you in your job if someone gave you a browser worth a shit.

bahaha...

I thought I saw YOU on one of those sites. ;)

I actually use Firefox but the kids won't use it cuz they are IE trained and think it's 'weird' so I get all sorts of fun stuff on my computer after they've been surfing. I have to keep IE on the computer because there is somethings that Firefox can't do that are IE specific.

Anyway, I think I've got the situation covered. It seems I've gotten rid of all spyware except I can't seem to get rid of the google ads on the top of this page...no matter what I use. And that is after installing the google toolbar and running the spy sweep. :banghead:

Or, to be more accurate: There are a handful of websites whose developers are stuck in the late ninties and refuse to write code to the governing standards. Instead, they choose to target IE and leave other out in the cold.

My point is -- this is the fault of the website developers, not of FireFox (just so as to not scare anyone away from trying FireFox). Thankfully, less and less of these types of sites exist every day. I actually can't remember the last time I had to revert to IE.

I have to open IE to use the Stat Tracker feature of yahoo fantasy football. I also have to use it for windows updates. I'm used to Firefox now and can't imagine ever going back to IE.

I use AdAware SE, Zone Alarm, Win Patrol, AVG Anti-Virus and also leave the Windows firewall on. I may be overdoing it, but my computer never runs slow, so what the hell.

So far I love the Firefox Browser, ran a Adaware scan after using it for two days with no blockers and it came up clean. Is it more secure than IE or have the hackers just not got to it yet?

There are certain to be venerbualities in the Mozilla line, as well -- in fact, some were found today (although they don't apply to the new 1.0PR version, I believe).

The big difference in my mind is that it's open source nature ensures that fixes are available almost as quickly venerabilities are found....
