Titans sign veteran kicker Anderson

September 14, 2004

NASHVILLE, Tenn. (AP) -- The Tennessee Titans signed veteran kicker Gary Anderson on Tuesday, making room for the NFL's all-time leading scorer by releasing Aaron Elling after one game.

Anderson, a 23-year veteran, rejoins the Titans after the start of the season for the second straight year. Tennessee's regular kicker, Joe Nedney, was placed on injured reserve after the first game last year with a knee injury and before last weekend's win over Miami with a torn hamstring.

Anderson had 123 points in 2003 for the Titans, and made 27 of 31 field goals.

He holds league records with 2,346 career points, 521 career field goals and 650 field goal attempts.

Elling was signed by the Titans last week after he was cut during the preseason by Minnesota.

The team also signed safety Donnie Nickey, a fifth-round pick from 2003 who was cut last week. The Titans waived third-year cornerback Mike Echols.

Tackle Isaac Herring was cut from the practice squad Tuesday, and replaced with guard Marico Portis.

I've said it before, but it just speaks volumes to how hard it is to find 32 good placekickers in this world when teams are begging for guys that are 107 years old to kick for them. I just think that's amazing.

Dammit Carl!!! :cuss:

You mean we could've had the NFL's all-time leading scorer and we passed on him to keep a guy who's never kicked in the NFL?

This is an absolute outrage!!!
