CHIEFS NOTES
PRAISE FOR BEISEL
Chiefs coach Dick Vermeil said middle linebacker Monty Beisel “played much better” in making his first regular-season start Sunday night and could hold onto the starting job once Kawika Mitchell returns from an ankle injury he suffered in the second preseason game.
Mitchell was able to sprint on the sore ankle last week and could return to practice this week.
“There will be (competition),” Vermeil said. “Our first thought is that Kawika is our starting middle linebacker, but he's not starting until he can play like a starter.… We're still going to play the best guy. We'll leave that position competitive.”
INJURY UPDATE
Vermeil updated the status of several players who were injured against Denver. Cornerback Eric Warfield (knee) is questionable to probable for Sunday's home opener against Carolina. Cornerback William Bartee (neck) is probable, defensive end Vonnie Holliday (groin) is questionable to doubtful, and safety Greg Wesley (hamstring) is questionable.
Rookie wide receiver Samie Parker (hamstring) could return to practice today and is questionable, according to Vermeil. Rookie linebacker Keyaron Fox (quad) is questionable and could also return to practice today. Both rookies were inactive at Denver.
Carolina will be without wide receiver/return man Steve Smith, who suffered a broken leg Monday in the Panthers' loss to Green Bay.
