CHIEFS NOTES

RECORD IN SIGHT

After only 47 regular-season games and 986 attempts, Priest Holmes is closing in on Christian Okoye's Chiefs career rushing record. Holmes, who has 4,741 yards, needs 157 to pass Okoye.

Holmes' trip to the top isn't surprising, not after he rushed for more than 1,400 yards in each of his three Chiefs seasons and 151 in last week's opener at Denver.

But Holmes is on the verge of breaking the record in far less time and work than Okoye put into it. Okoye played 79 games and carried the ball 1,246 times for the Chiefs during 1987-92.

Unlike some of his other achievements with the Chiefs, mainly his 2001 NFL rushing title and last year's touchdown record, Holmes is more nonchalant about this one.

“It wasn't really one of my goals,” he said. “If it doesn't come this week, it'll come.”

STREAK AT STAKE

The Chiefs haven't dropped back-to-back regular-season games since losing to San Diego and Denver on consecutive weekends in October 2002. That's a streak of 26 games — the longest in the league.

The Colts, with a streak of 25 games, are second. The Colts also lost last week and have a difficult assignment Sunday at Tennessee.

PRACTICE-SQUAD MOVE

The Chiefs re-signed safety Scott Connot to their practice squad and released tight end Aaron Golliday. Connot, a rookie from South Dakota State, went to training camp with the Chiefs but was cut after camp.

Golliday became expendable when the Chiefs added another tight end, Casey Poppinga, to the practice squad Wednesday.

INJURY REPORT

The Chiefs practiced without two starters (defensive end Vonnie Holliday and strong safety Greg Wesley) and four other players (wide receiver Samie Parker, running back Omar Easy, linebacker Keyaron Fox and tight end Kris Wilson). The Chiefs added Easy and tackle John Welbourn to the injury report. Cornerback William Bartee was upgraded from questionable to probable.
