DENVER -- First there was "The Drive" for John Elway, and now there's John Elway Drive.
The city of Denver unveiled the sign Sunday that renames a portion of a street near Invesco Field at Mile High in honor of the former Denver Broncos quarterback, who was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame earlier this summer.
The change must be approved by the Denver City Council. The city hopes to eventually rename the entire street, now called Mile High Stadium Circle, for Elway.
The stadium's new address will be #7 John Elway Drive, for Elway's jersey number when he played from 1983-1998. He retired after leading Denver to two straight Super Bowl wins.
The Denver Broncos will rename the pedestrian pathway circling the stadium "Mile High Walk" for the original Mile High Stadium.
One of Elway's most fabled performance was "The Drive," a 98-yard touchdown drive in the closing minutes of the 1986 AFC title game against Cleveland. The Broncos won in overtime, 23-20.
