Can you imagine a path of Morgan State, Cal/Minnesota, Nova/Texas, and Michigan State? Jesus Christ.

Wow. Practically spoon-fed. You'd have to favor Memphis' utterly impenetrable defense in a bracket like that.

Our schedule wasn't as good this year as it was last year, and thanks to us struggling to find a PG in December we lost to the two top 20 teams we played, but UConn not only lost to that same team in March, but they did it after losing their previous game.

I'm asking you to justify why Memphis should get a 1 over UConn. I can make very easy arguments for UConn.

Coming into that 6 overtime game against Syracuse, Connecticut had lost exactly one game this year against a team other than Pittsburgh: 27-1. They have about three times as many wins on the road/at neutral sites over tournament teams than Memphis has total wins over tournament teams.

Tennessee and Gonzaga are fine wins, but they're probably not going to get higher than a 5 or 6 seed tops and UAB's not making the tournament. Those are resume-padders, but they aren't the basis for a team arguing to be a 1 seed.

On the road alone UConn went 13-1 with wins:

@ Louisville by about 20
@ Marquette
@ West Virginia
@ Gonzaga
@ Notre Dame, snapping their 44 game home winning streak
@ Cincinnati(who beat UAB)

And they hammered Wisconsin and Miami on a neutral court.

Plus home wins over the likes of Villanova, Syracuse, and Michigan.

Do you understand what you're calling a 'skid'? Every team in the country experienced much worse than a loss @Pittsburgh followed by a 6 overtime loss to a team like Syracuse at some point. Using that as justification for looking past the whole body of work UConn put forward is inane.

How do you figure, particularly if we end up in UNC's bracket?

I don't even see much daylight between UConn's resume and Carolina's.

Ultra Peanut 03-14-2009 10:40 PM

I praised UConn's resume in another thread. You have the better SOS and more opportunities vs. top 20 teams going for you, and we have the whole "haven't lost since before America ever had a black President" thing going for us. Michigan State has a great RPI, and their insanely mediocre conference somehow managed to cobble together some respectable top 40 RPIs, on the whole, though there's the "you lost to several so-so teams and got clobbered by UNC" thing they have to worry about. Pitt and UL have the "we swept/finished better than UConn" thing in their favor, if the committee decides to only go with 2 #1 seeds from one conference. Duke has a #2 RPI and may end up winning God's Conference. It's a mess.

Also, if you're going to count @Notre Dame(74) and @Cincinnati(85), then I'm going to count @Tulsa (56), @UTEP (84), and @Houston (87). And we beat Cincinnati. But hey, #56 Tulsa is way less impressive than #64 Miami!

HolmeZz 03-14-2009 10:46 PM

I was counting Notre Dame because we snapped their 44 game home winning streak(and record 20 game home winning streak within the Big East). That was significant, though moreso at the time.

I only included Cincinnati because they beat a UAB team that you included. I wouldn't hold that up otherwise, particularly when we've got much better wins than that.

Oklahoma lost to Arkansas, and Michigan State lost to Northwestern, but that doesn't make them noteworthy.

I don't even know what this argument is about anymore.

Marist vs. Bryant*, who would win? It's the battle of Memphis OOC cupcake vs. UConn OOC cupcake, and the winner gets a trip to the CollegeInsider.com Invitational**!

*Kobe?

** I think the CBI and CI.com tourneys are actually a ploy by the NIT to make their own tournament look more prestigious by comparison.

Well, they're no Kentucky or Penn State.

By which I mean to say, they wouldn't be a ****ing pathetic selection.
