I live in Charlotte... Temperatures are usually in the fifties to sixties. Dropped to twenty last night and people were calling in...

I don't think I've ever seen anything like that. It's kind of funny but scary too, because it's moving slowly enough for you to think you need to do something to protect your house, but too quickly to make it to Home Depot and back with some plywood or something. Creepy.

That is cool to watch...bet it could do some major property damage though. How do you stop that? Or do you just leave and contact the insurance company afterward?

It did do some major damage. If you look around, there's other videos about it. Just happened last week. I saw one where it literally tore through part of somebody's house. It looks slow and all, but it's solid ice...

Normally, you would step your yard down with a concrete wall or rock retaining wall a little wider than your house, the bigger the better. Most walls are only designed to stop small flows though so at some point if it doesn't pile up on the wall and divert it around the sides of your house, you're just ****ed. Large trees planted close and at an angle might divert the flow, but sometimes you just can't win and accept the fact you live on the edge of a large ****ing ice machine.

I stayed in a native cabin North East of Lake Winnipeg that had holes drilled into the yard/rock in a triangle with a point nearest the lake. They had a storage shed with What looked like 3' walls made out of old Aluminum concrete forms with legs. When it starts you pull the little man hole covers off the holes and drop the posts on the walls into the holes. I've only been there in the summer, but they had pictures of it funneling the flow around both sides of the cabin.

The weather is the best thing to happen to the Superbowl and the NFL ratings.

They are loving it.

Really icy here in Houston. Mostly because they didn't pre-salt the roads to prevent ice from forming over night. If this happened where I used to live (NoVA) they wouldn't of canceled anything because this sort of weather is normal.

Tuesday (2/4) isn't looking good. Projected to get between 6-10" of snow in the KC area. Will be submitting a day off request for Tuesday, as I'd rather want to stay home all day, than have to go drive anywhere in this storm.

I was scraping ice off my car Saturday morning and my ice scraper broke. Perils of moving from Texas, lol.
