yeah, well...now that the steroid era is over and the HGH testing is hitting...teams can't buy their success any longer. Look at the Dodgers. Good team, yeah...and sure, they bought their pitching...(or some of it)...but they also spent GOBS of money on guys like Ethier, Crawford, Gonzalez, Hanley, Kemp, etc...and their best hitters are Puig (INSANELY CHEAP CONTRACT FOR A MEGA STAR CALIBER PLAYER) and Dee "scrap heap" Gordon. In fact, they are pretty much an average offense because the money they spent on all of their veteran "stars" has been a total waste.
The way you build winning teams is developing your own players, drafting well, and signing the right international players with high ceilings. Basically, Dayton has done everything right except for ... developing players. The days of buying stars is over. Players are starting to regress as early as their 30 year old seasons. Youth is what wins in today's baseball. Thus, even small market teams can win because you control your players for 6 years...and a lot of teams are starting to offer team friendly contracts to buy up the first 2 years of a player's free agency. So really, there is no excuses any longer for "teams buying success." Especially with revenue sharing and the fact TV deals are BLOWING UP. I think the Royals roster is much better than the Yankees roster. Our issue is "the best farm club ever!" developed horrendously (thus far). |
I don't think Bud Selig has bought a new suit in 20 years...

Maybe in the past pitchers laid one over the plate for retiring All-Star's but the game didn't count. When the league winner is almost guaranteed a WS championship, he had better not be grovving a pitch. |
No Tony Gwynn tribute is bullshit

The Dodgers are a great team because of their starting rotation, no doubt. But let's not pretend they've wisely spent money or anything. I mean, the contracts for Kemp, Ethier, Crawford, Gonzalez and Hanley Ramirez are simply atrocious contracts. As much as I like Greinke (and I do), I just don't think giving a RH SP that much money is a great idea. But at least he's producing. The Dodgers basically hit the jackpot and Puig and have the best SP in baseball (hands down). They'd be better off DFA'ing Ethier and Crawford and just eating those contracts at this point. Try and trade Kemp and eat 50% of that contract as well. Those guys are hardly even playing above replacement level (and Ethier probably below) and are blocking Joc Pederson. Shit, your best OF'er (outside of Puig, of course) is platoon darling Scott Van Slyke. One could argue the trade they made with the Sox where the Sox ridded themselves of all of those awful contracts was a big reason the Sox won the WS last year LMAO |
also, as someone who loathes the Cardinals, it was very nice to see them be the reason the NL lost. It's a good ****ing thing Matheny chose Pat ****ing Neshek to be an all-star LMAO
Blah blah blah...I realize he's having a great year, but really? Really? He needed to pitch an inning in the all-star game? Every year a setup guy is going to have a streak where he doesn't give up runs for a bunch of games in a row...but that doesn't mean he's an all-star. Jean Machi isn't an all-star. Pat Neshek isn't a ****ing all-star. But hey, Matheny blows a game?! Who would have guessed it! Right, Cardinals fans? |
