More than one of them, in fact.

I thought IR meant he was out for the year. So... he could actually return in January?

Why bother? We're not going to give him carries. We're not going to "bring him along slowly" in the playoffs.

A few years back the NFL changed the IR rule to allow every team one player on the IR to return after 6 weeks. The Chiefs have not used this designation on anyone that I'm aware of so they could in theory use it on Charles & have him return. However it appears they have to be noted as "designated to return" when they are placed on IR which I haven't heard regarding Charles. Which makes sense given that the report was at least 8 weeks which at best puts him back at the beginning of the playoffs & as you said you aren't going to ease him back in a playoff game. Anyway here's the actual rule:
Quote:

During each season a club will be permitted to return one player from the Reserve/Injured List to its 53-player Active/Inactive List. Such player must have suffered a major football-related injury (defined as an injury that renders the player physically unable to practice or play football for a period of at least six weeks [42 calendar days] from the date that the injury occurred) after reporting to training camp and must have been placed on Reserve/Injured after 4:00 p.m., New York time, on the Tuesday after the final roster reduction. A player who is eligible to return must be noted as "Designated for Return" at the time the player is placed on Reserve.

I thought you had a choice between using a PUP tag or IR-DtR and using the former precludes you from using the latter.

Oh, and Terrence Smith is #48 if anyone cares. I care because I can finally wear my #48 jersey. :p

Minus the fumbling in college problem.

Rule changed this year so that you do not have to designate the returner at the time they are put on IR:

Actually, he's not even remotely similar. Different running style, different size (5'10 as opposed to 6'0, 20 pounds lighter) and he has better vision and softer hands.

Not that I've ever heard of, but I certainly wouldn't say I couldn't be wrong. However my understanding is the PUP list is only available if you are injured before training camp starts (which is why Houston was PUP'd) & therefore is totally separate from the IR designation to return. But again I could definitely be wrong.
