Still no NFL waiver wire, so any team reaching out to Peyton Manning now would be violating the rules.

Clark gets those reports, so does Pioli.

They have to go all in on Manning. I think this might be the one time that the fans voice will be heard loud and clear.

If the Chiefs roll out Cassel next year, the fanbase is gone.

Oh they heard the fan base loud and clear: Ladies and gentlemen, I would like to introduce the next QB for the KANSAS CITY CHIEFS....

What specific rule would they be violating? This isn't tampering since he has been released. I'm confused.......something with the new CBA?

even though he's not technically going to waivers in the traditional sense.

If it was the traditional waiver wire, would that coin toss we won against Seattle be a really big deal now?

Stuff Peyton Manning full of Boulevard Pale Ale and a Z-Man sandwich. Show him pictures of Arrowhead Stadium on a crisp fall Sunday, play video of Jamaal Charles rushing through the line and Tony Moeaki’s catch against the 49ers last year and — put this one on loop — Dwayne Bowe’s circus grabs in Indianapolis.

Whatever it takes.

Scott Pioli has a hard job. Being general manager of the Chiefs means an endless string of decisions on a razor’s edge, the wrong answer bringing losses and criticism and ultimately bad news from the boss.

Which is why he should be ecstatic, skipping down the halls of the Chiefs’ offices and bear-hugging Romeo Crennel to celebrate the easiest decision of his professional career:

Pursue Manning with everything the franchise has.

Do this, and a disproportionate amount of the common criticism — cheap ownership, unwilling to make bold moves, too much commitment to Matt Cassel — goes away. Vanishes.

This makes too much sense for the Chiefs not to make signing one of five greatest quarterbacks of all time priority No. 1, 2 and 3 this offseason.

Pioli’s Chiefs have made do with a mediocre quarterback. Their vision has been clouded by Cassel’s limitations. With rules stacked in favor of passing, the Chiefs have built around running. In three years, it’s produced a one-and-done playoff appearance in one of the NFL’s weakest divisions.

This is their chance to fix all that, a gift from the football gods of circumstance.

The best part? Every indication is that Pioli and the Chiefs are absolutely doing this.

Crennel talks openly and specifically about Manning, almost certainly violated the NFL’s tampering rules in the process. Pioli talks openly and specifically about improving the quarterback position. Clark Hunt talks openly and specifically about the enormous gap between what the Chiefs currently spend and what they’ll be required to spend in 2013 not being an issue.

So the talking points from the three most powerful men in the organization all point toward signing Manning to what would almost certainly be the highest annual salary in franchise history.

Manning will be able to choose virtually any franchise he wants. He is in a great spot. One projection says he’d make the biggest impact in Arizona, adding four wins. The Dolphins could use him. Seattle, too. And Washington. The list goes on and on, so the Chiefs will have to make their case.

They’ll have to show Manning more than the money. His first question might be how the Chiefs plan on fixing their broken offensive line, because he always had one of the league’s best in Indy. The Chiefs will also have to accept a significant risk.

Manning hasn’t thrown a meaningful pass in more than a year. He had three neck surgeries in 19 months. Nobody can be certain when or even if he’ll fully recover. Bringing him in means overhauling the existing system for Manning’s.

Even forgetting the neck, Manning turns 36 this month. Only five starting quarterbacks at that age have ever had higher passing ratings than Cassel’s 93.0 mark in 2010. Only three — Johnny Unitas, Jim Plunkett and John Elway — have won a Super Bowl after their 36th birthday.

It’s just that the Chiefs are terrifically positioned to absorb the risk and accentuate the potential reward.

The last five years or so of frugal spending mean they can make the money work. The franchise tag on Bowe, Moeaki’s presumed healing and Jon Baldwin’s presumed development mean Manning would have one of the league’s best group of receivers. Charles’ presumed healing means he’d have one of the best running backs.

As for the offensive line, the right moves can fix that this offseason. Besides, Manning would make the line instantly and significantly better.

And if it turns out that Manning can’t play, or is only a vague representation of his former self, then Cassel becomes a workable insurance policy.

The Chiefs are in a unique spot where the rewards of signing Manning mean more, and the risks mean less.

Pioli will have missed a franchise-altering opportunity if he doesn’t pursue this. NFL decisions never come this easy.

is the waiver wire order the same as draft order? I think it would be, but have no idea.

Manning makes trip to Miami

Posted by Mike Florio on March 7, 2012, 5:22 PM EST

Reuters
Get used to it.

Until quarterback Peyton Manning, perhaps the biggest-name free agent since Reggie White (or ever), signs with a new team, his whereabouts will be scrutinized more closely than Lindsay Lohan’s.

According to NBC Miami, Manning is in Miami. A flight carrying Manning landed at Opa-Locka Executive Airport, and he then got into a van. (We’ve yet to determine whether Brad Childress was driving.)

Manning’s presence in Mami doesn’t mean he’s there to visit with the Dolphins. As so many Dolphins fans point out, Manning has a house there. (Hell, he’s rich enough to have a house in every NFL city.)

But the South Florida frenzy that already has emerged regarding Manning won’t be going anywhere until Manning makes his decision. And until proven otherwise, I’ll continue to believe that Manning will, like Jim Harbaugh and Jeff Fisher before him, know that the key to getting the best offer elsewhere will be to get Dolphins owner Stephen Ross to open his wallet as wide as it will go.

Jets have already inquired about Peyton Manning

No matter how much they say publicly that Mark Sanchez is their man, the New York Jets are wasting no time in at least exploring the possibility of dumping their man in favor of Peyton Manning.

On the same afternoon that the Colts formally announced they were releasing Manning, the Jets inquired about Peyton Manning’s interest in playing for them, Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reports.

Talk of Manning to the Jets has been simmering since the end of the regular season, when Sanchez struggled down the stretch and the Jets missed the playoffs, and several Jets players provided anonymous quotes to reporters saying they lacked confidence in Sanchez’s ability to lead the team.

The Jets’ brass, led by head coach Rex Ryan, has always said that Sanchez will be the starter going forward. But the Jets haven’t specifically ruled out the possibility of signing Manning, and now that they have the opportunity, they’re exploring it.

On NFL32 they just went through all of the teams who could be interested in Manning.

Suzy Kolber says, 'How about the chiefs? they have Matt Cassel."
Mort and Chris Carter immediatly start laughing....
Carter says, "That's the exact reason they should be calling Manning." pffft Matt Cassel.

Then they talked about how much talent we have on Offense and how young the team is.

Seahawks moving quickly to reach out to Peyton Manning

It’s becoming increasingly clear that the Seahawks want to be major players in the Peyton Manning sweepstakes.

Albert Breer of NFL Network reports that the Seahawks were ready to go as soon as Manning’s release became official, reaching out to Manning’s camp as soon as the official word went out to other teams that Manning’s contract had formally been terminated.

That matches with the earlier report that the Seahawks are willing to spend big to acquire Manning. There’s little doubt that the Seahawks are going to make a push to bring Manning to Seattle.

Tarvaris Jackson is slated to return as the starter in Seattle this season, and the Seahawks will surely say publicly that they’re committed to him, just as the Jets are saying publicly that they’re committed to Mark Sanchez. But if the Seahawks see an opportunity to upgrade from Tarvaris Jackson to a healthy Peyton Manning, that’s a move they’ll gladly make.

While i doubt Carr is still a chief, it's possible the Chiefs could be waiting to sign Bowe and Carr until they know what Manning is going to cost.

I know how much people around here hate 'The Patriot Way' but on defense the patriots like to field a bunch of Safety/Cornerback tweeners and not really have safeties and cornerbacks. Potientially they could be prepared to run with 3 cornerbacks all year long along with Berry.

He said they will be all in to pay him, but not something crazy type of money.

Eh, it was just a 15 second spot where they quoted Adam teicher.

O.city 03-07-2012 05:56 PM

I haven't been on CP all day (15 midterms in 10 days will keep you busy), so I don't know if this has been said, but Holthus brought up another point.

Said he has spent some time with Manning, when Manning was in KC for a Sprint thing. Said Manning talked about how he loved the passion of KC and loved the fans. Said something about how this is how football is supposed to be.

Talked about how KC would be the most familiar type of town for Manning compared to Indy. I don't know. I'm extremely tired and a little delirious, but it sounded as if Holthus was pretty excited about the thing.

they do that same thing all the time with other markets. We just don't know that the reporters from the other markets that talk are just as clueless as Teicher.
