Feel bad for Breeland. Thought for sure he’d be signed by now.

Hopefully that means we can get him back on a decent deal

He's probably an 8-10 per year average.

His deal with the Panthers was going to be 3-years, $24 million, with $11 million in guarantees.

I wonder if we can make a similar deal.

100%. Free agency would be a success in my eyes if they could sign Breeland to a cap friendly deal, re-work Watkins deal, and sign Jones long term (or receive a large haul of picks in return).

The downside to this run it back approach is if Jones ends up playing on the tag, Watkins is released, and we lose Breeland and others (Pennel, Robinson, etc). In free agency.

Yes, but people around here still want to trade for a CB like Slay.

Frankly, I have always felt that long term is probably best to trade Jones, but I'm not going to be upset if we keep him, it just means that we are not going to be active in the FA market.

I know we don’t have depth, but Ward and Fenton are good, young corners. I don’t think we’re that far off at CB.

They won’t get much trading either because the other team is going to have to eat salary to make it worthwhile.

We'll sign a bargain CB FA at some point (a la Breeland last year) and probably draft one as well.

We seem to have a really good staff of defensive coaches right now and plug n play CB's seem to kind of work in Spags scheme (i.e. you don't need great CB's necessarily). Seems to rely more on getting pressure and disguising coverages, so I think we'll be alright. Last year worked out okay.

RunKC 03-19-2020 10:06 AM

Lot of decent corners left. We tried to get Ronald Darby last year. Would love to sign him to a 2 year deal.

$3 million cap hit last year. We can probably afford that with a Sammy restructure

I disagree.

If they can extend Watkins where he helps the cap situation, they retain a guy who knows the system, has trust with Mahomes, and has big play ability. Watkins' health remains a concern, but he is still young and is a tremendous talent. If teams dedicate scheme resources to Kelce/Hill, we have seen Sammy feast.

D-Rob is the guy you can replace with a draft pick. There would be no immediate pressure to acclimate another young receiver with Hardman and Pringle able to step in and contribute more in a #4/#5 role.

Sammy is not guaranteed to get any big offers if he is released, knowing this upcoming crop is deep. He might want long term security instead, and should strongly consider staying. He's vocalized his appreciation for the coaching and training staff in KC, plus he will be on a perennial contender.

Makes too much sense to add a couple years to his current contract where everyone benefits.

pugsnotdrugs19 03-19-2020 11:36 AM

How about a 3 year Watkins extension, $30M, convert $10M of his $13.75M base salary to signing bonus to bring his cap hit down to $13.5M in 2020...

Then it’d be about the same hit for the remaining years.

Yes, I was thinking something similar to this. I'm fine with that $14 million base number, but not the $21 million cap number for this season....

If he's guaranteed $30+ million over the course of the next couple seasons, yes.

I doubt teams will offer him more than $14-15 per on any deal given his injury history.

Might as well be secured from 2020-2022 where he will be turning 30 years old. I offered other reasons why a Watkins extension is in his best interests.

Red Dawg 03-19-2020 11:50 AM

my understanding (and I'm probably wrong) of a salary to bonus conversion is, whatever is converted gets spread out evenly over the remaining years of the contract, and is dead money. So a 10 mil conversion would end up being 3.33mil per year over the remaining 3 years.

I guess that's ok if the plan is to keep him that long. But if he's not in the plans long term, whenever he gets cut/traded/etc, you're still stuck with that dead money hit for those years. Do that on enough contracts, and that's an issue.

I think an extension is what's in Sammy's best interest. Frankly, as much as he's bounced around I would think finding a place to call home and have a career with a stud QB seems to be exactly what he needs. The only teams that I could see wanting him would be the Packers or Texans, but knowing our situation I bet both are content to just wait for a release.

If we cut/restructure Sammy and sign Jones so that he doesn't have such a big current year cap hit, I'd be okay with Ryan on a 3 year deal averaging 10m.

I’d rather re sign Breeland for that money. He knows the system

Have you listened to Watkins?

He’s not taking anything near that low of a deal.

He legit thinks he’s Julio Jones.

Jones equalled Watkins' entire production from 2018-2019 in one season last year. Watkins can take a hike if he doesn't significantly decrease his salary.

Nick Vigil, Ronald Darby and Ross Cockrell

This are guys on the top of my list for us to sign

The Athletic is supposed to be free for the next 90 days.

But the 10 are.

Robert-Coleman, CB
Kevin Johnson, CB
Devonta Freeman, RB
Delanie Walker, TE
Logan Ryan, CB
Shelby Harris, DT
Nigel Bradham, LB
Brandon Mebane, DT
Ronald Darby, CB
Jonathan Joseph, CB

The only way we can do this is if a Jones extension is near or a Sammy extension or cut is near as well. Deal is Walker would be so potent in this offense

Walker would be a killer #2.

If they have 2 DT's on the list, would that mean they are speculating that we are pruning off some of the current DL?

Are they looking to draft a QB?

Xavier Williams is gone so we do need another DT in the rotation. I would like for us to re sign Pennel as opposed to Harris or Mebane

True, forgot about Xavier. Harris wouldn't be a bad pick up if the price was right.

Kiimo 03-19-2020 01:11 PM

I don't like the idea of paying running backs but we could use Devonta Freeman. He's got lateral speed that we could utilize that the other RBs on the roster don't have.

I think they’re using it as a way to get out of the contract Failway signed him to. Saying he didn’t pass a physical I think I heard.

Idk about that. They have Ronald Jones which is pretty good. Also apparently Brady wants AB in Tampa but Bruce Arians is a hard no on that as he didn’t like his time with AB in Pittsburgh

He's got that "help me, i'm being held against my will" look on his face too.

Makes you wonder lol.

VAGOMO 4 LIFE! 03-19-2020 02:44 PM

How do we have money for Henne is the real question?

Setsuna 03-19-2020 02:47 PM

Tampa bay would be a good place for Gurley. He can't be a bell cow anymore. He needs to be in a 2 RB system until his retirement.

Chiefspants 03-19-2020 02:54 PM

If Gurley’s arthritis held off for one more half season the Rams likely win it all.

They went for broke and now are at the other end with nothing to show for it.
