I was under the impression a Mahomes extension wouldn't be coming until later, perhaps that's not the case?

Smaller deals starting to fall into place.

Feel bad for Breeland. Thought for sure he’d be signed by now.
Hopefully that means we can get him back on a decent deal |

Gurley trade talks heating up.

The downside to this run it back approach is if Jones ends up playing on the tag, Watkins is released, and we lose Breeland and others (Pennel, Robinson, etc). In free agency. |
I get that the money just wasn't there for Chris Harris, but holy shit our CB room looks ****ing terribad right now.
Ward Fenton Alex Brown ??? ??? ??? Brutal. |
We have 9 players with a cap hit over 10 mil. 5 of them are 16 mil or more. Thats like holy hell.

Frankly, I have always felt that long term is probably best to trade Jones, but I'm not going to be upset if we keep him, it just means that we are not going to be active in the FA market. |

Well if we’re working on Mahomes and Jones, let’s get one done sometime soon... maybe both...
That’d be great. |

We seem to have a really good staff of defensive coaches right now and plug n play CB's seem to kind of work in Spags scheme (i.e. you don't need great CB's necessarily). Seems to rely more on getting pressure and disguising coverages, so I think we'll be alright. Last year worked out okay. |
Lot of decent corners left. We tried to get Ronald Darby last year. Would love to sign him to a 2 year deal.
$3 million cap hit last year. We can probably afford that with a Sammy restructure |
This definitely means were keeping Jones. Yannick was tagged as well

If they can extend Watkins where he helps the cap situation, they retain a guy who knows the system, has trust with Mahomes, and has big play ability. Watkins' health remains a concern, but he is still young and is a tremendous talent. If teams dedicate scheme resources to Kelce/Hill, we have seen Sammy feast. D-Rob is the guy you can replace with a draft pick. There would be no immediate pressure to acclimate another young receiver with Hardman and Pringle able to step in and contribute more in a #4/#5 role. Sammy is not guaranteed to get any big offers if he is released, knowing this upcoming crop is deep. He might want long term security instead, and should strongly consider staying. He's vocalized his appreciation for the coaching and training staff in KC, plus he will be on a perennial contender. Makes too much sense to add a couple years to his current contract where everyone benefits. |
How about a 3 year Watkins extension, $30M, convert $10M of his $13.75M base salary to signing bonus to bring his cap hit down to $13.5M in 2020...
Then it’d be about the same hit for the remaining years. |

I doubt teams will offer him more than $14-15 per on any deal given his injury history. Might as well be secured from 2020-2022 where he will be turning 30 years old. I offered other reasons why a Watkins extension is in his best interests. |
He better make less than Hill and Travis.
|
Quote:
I guess that's ok if the plan is to keep him that long. But if he's not in the plans long term, whenever he gets cut/traded/etc, you're still stuck with that dead money hit for those years. Do that on enough contracts, and that's an issue. |

I think an extension is what's in Sammy's best interest. Frankly, as much as he's bounced around I would think finding a place to call home and have a career with a stud QB seems to be exactly what he needs. The only teams that I could see wanting him would be the Packers or Texans, but knowing our situation I bet both are content to just wait for a release.

Tampa bay would be a good place for Gurley. He can't be a bell cow anymore. He needs to be in a 2 RB system until his retirement.
|
If Gurley’s arthritis held off for one more half season the Rams likely win it all.
They went for broke and now are at the other end with nothing to show for it. |
