The vibes leading up to this game are immaculate.

The Bengals are on Twitter talking shit. The media is picking the Bengals almost unanimously. We are home dogs.

Meanwhile you could just see the hunger in Andy and Pat’s eyes at that podium.

I will honestly be shocked if we don’t win this game.

We went the whole field on the first drive and were a batted pass from a wide open Kelce from scoring a TD. Then we went 3 straight drives scoring a TD before the Kelce fumble and Butker miss.

And that was without Mecole Hardman or Kadarius Toney. There is no tape of those 2 playing together. None. And you know damn well that Andy has a bunch of new shit in his bag ready to unleash this week.

I think we’re scoring 30+ this weekend. 40 wouldn’t surprise me

And that was after a 34-yard pass to Watson was wiped out by linemen being downfield

Joe Thuney missed that game, Brown plays about a million times better when Thuney is with him.

The magic clearly hasn’t waned, but something is amiss from the pocket. One might ask why Week 13 was so arbitrarily used as the cutoff in the above table. The answer? That's when Kansas City faced its upcoming conference championship opponent, the Cincinnati Bengals.

Since then, Mahomes has been very ordinary when dropping straight back and throwing from the pocket. The Chiefs' approach appears to have become far more conservative, too. There are struggles at wide receiver, as well as a declining amount of man coverage being played against Kansas City since that Bengals game.

If recent trends hold, there will be many nervous onlookers waiting to see if Mahomes’ injury hampers his seemingly unstoppable improvisational skills. If that is the case, then we will see a battle of two quarterbacks dueling from the pocket. The difference between them? Mahomes has struggled of late from there, while Joe Burrow is currently the best pocket passer the league has to offer.

I have been thinking for weeks now that Andy has been keeping things simple to not show anything until it is needed. It is now needed, and I am excited to see what wizardry Andy has cooked up!

Alright, so.

An easy jog is not the split-second urgency of having to violently dig your heel in to take off to avoid pressure.

But.... that is super promising.

When he steps onto the stage to the podium he steps up with his right foot. No flinch or anything.

He is going to be fine assuming nothing happens during the game to reaggrivate.

You guys are eventually going to learn who Mahomes is. Eventually.

He is a really great dude and smart as hell.

But he is an insane person, competitively. He's not the kind of person that you know. He is not only the best player at this sport, he is the kind of guy who will grit out a practice if it means earning a "FP" on the injury report and forcing the other team to raise their eyebrows. He doesn't give a shit. He wants to win as much as you love your kids.

I just say all of this so that we have our expectations where they need to be. It's conceivable he's going to walk as normal as possible and just grit it out to shut up everyone. He doesn't want to be questioned.

That said, all that said: seeing him walk like that is miles better than having him walk like he did at the Jags game.

It's a high ankle sprain, though. A high ankle sprain. Humans were not meant to be upper caliber athletes on a high ankle sprain.

Give Henne the first drive so that Cincy's DC changes his planning for the second drive where Henne comes our for first snap then put MVP in.

Gravedigger 01-25-2023 01:46 PM

Kinda keeps them guessing like it does us. Have Mahomes come out and walk around like it's no big deal, but maybe list him as questionable/doubtful for the game, but then have him start. Give Henne the first team reps with media availability to get it on camera, have Reid say we're getting Henne ready to go.

Mahomes isn't going to let Henne take a snap this week unless Andy forces him to.

Mahomes wants the Bengals to gameplan for him, and he wants to beat them.

Take the most insanely competitive thing you could envision Mahomes doing, and he will do that thing 10 times out of 10. It's who he is.

So a buddy of mine at work happens to be a bengals fan. He is from Cincinnati so he grew up rooting for the team. He told me yesterday that he feels very nervous about this game because he thinks Mahomes is scarier when he plays within the pocket. When he gets out of the pocket is where they feel they can contain him. Said Chiefs are a whole different animal compared to Buffalo.

I think it's just you...

I've had a few pretty good ankle sprains and straightforward movements like walking had little/no impact on it. Then if I tried to cut/turn on it, that was extremely uncomfortable. And if I mis-stepped and rolled it a bit it was like lightning in my leg.

That's really my biggest issue. In a football game there WILL be times that someone hits that ankle or he toe-picks it or just gets knocked over and puts it out there to brace on instinct.

And man, that shit is going to HURT. And it's gonna take a bit for that pain to work itself down to a dull roar.

I have no question that it will be sound enough to play on and even push off of. But when the bullets start to fly it will be inevitable that shit happens to it that hurt like a MFer. And as tough as he is, he ain't immune to it.

There are actually upsides to the injury limited Mahomes a bit.

When the Bengals drop 8 and kept a spy, it has completely negated Mahomes' roll out game. It's been three games and Mahomes got better this year with it, but he still struggled to adjust. Last year he was completely flabbergasted.

Now that Mahomes won't be rolling out as much, and isn't as much of a scramble threat, it's possible the Bengals play a more conventional style.

Let the Bengals drop 8 we need to feed Pacheco.

He's going to be in alot of pain especially with that wind chill Sunday night

This,

But I doubt they will the early game shit is when we need to take deep shots if possible. Because they are going to think we are going to come out conservatively

Brother, McKinnon was steamrolling the Bengals in the AFCCG against a light box.

Their DTs are better now than they were then, but our primary RB is also much better. Pacheco has a shot at 7 yards/carry unless the Bengals pack the box on an injured Mahomes.

Edit: This is starting to get off topic however.

Depends on how the OLine is handling the 3 rushers. If they are getting home then McKinnon needs to get lion share of snaps for his blocking abilities.

I wish this narrative would die in an AIDS TREE fire.

Its nonsense, Mahomes is the MVP this season because he can do all that he does, he isn't miraculously going to become an "even better" QB because he has limited mobility. His ability to ad lib and do amazing shit when there isn't another play is what makes him the badass he is.

Its just fantasy land nonsense.

I agree with you, but I do think an alternate gameplan which gets the ball out faster has potential. Not a guarantee, but if we have to accept that Mahomes cannot be Superman out of the pocket this Sunday, then the good thing is he has many other strengths that we can form an alternative gameplan around.

I’ve always felt that walking on a sprain or just slowly moving my ankle sometimes hurt worse than actually playing a sport.

Is there anything to that? Or just me?

Definitely not an expert on the subject.

I definitely find that slow deliberate move when I am sore anywhere are a little more painful. Like I could struggle to stand up from a sit when my legs and glutes are sore, but then when I go out for a run I don't notice it as much.

Someone hasn't watched the 3 games againat the Bengals

Rain Man 01-25-2023 02:26 PM

God probably saw his inbox getting clogged with requests, so he moved around his to-do list to heal Mahomes and let the giant mudslide engulf the village in Cameroon.

It's incredible how smart you think you are and yet are always wrong:

Look where the majority of plays came from

That doesn't dispute my point dumbass. The ankle injury in no way makes him a "better" QB.

You apparently didn't watch any playoff games the last 4 years.

BTW you see the insane leaping TD run he had in that game?

Dipshit.

I'm sure they were praying for Mahomes too, so it was the logical outcome.

Yeah it totally counters what Marclueless was saying. With the way they defend him the rolling out stuff doesn't work as well he can give them work from the pocket

Every play in which Mahomes uses his legs to run, or rollout, COMES FROM THE POCKET.

Holy shit Billay go suck a dick, something you are good at.

jerryaldini 01-25-2023 02:47 PM

Probably Q. Per Rapp Reid said Mahomes would do everything in practice today!

#Chiefs coach Andy Reid told reporters that QB Patrick Mahomes (high ankle) will practice today. Wouldn't be surprised if he's limited but Reid said he expects him to do everything. "We'll see."

Says "just the flu guy".

He ran straight up the middle in that play. All of the big play throws in that last Bengals game came from the pocket. Once again you are being Marclueless
