I don't know if Smith is elite he was certainly damn good the last few years. Great coverage average ball skills. Gains is good coverage but below average ball skills. Here's the problem Peters will get thrown at less but the guy on the other side isn't going to pick anything off. I hope I'm wrong and maybe a guy like Nelson wins and plays outside we'll see. I like Gaines much better in the slot though.

Gaines' ball skills are not "below average". He had a ridiculous amount of PD's in college. Led the country I beleive.

He just hasn't got many opportunities. In his limited time he's been really good in coverage, and hasn't been targeted that much.

I wouldn't say he's locked in for #2.

RossTravis has some real talent and I think Osaunnesy is on the bubble unless they can stash one on IR.

O'Shaughnessy isn't on the bubble. Alex was looking for him more and more before he went on IR last season.

I think that's understating it a bit.

Neither Nelson or Gaines have an actual full season of full time snaps under their belts, os we are really relying on inexperienced corners, with Peters as the most seasoned of the group.

No I understand that as a group we're more inexperienced than we were those years, but I'm just pointing out our secondary coaches ability to have these guys ready despite the inexperience.

We're also more talented than we've been. I'll take talent over experience all day. I've heard some of our coaches mention that it's not as difficult mentally for young corners in this scheme as it is for other positions (like safety for instance).

He didn't have many INTs in college and 0 as a pro.

In 2014, Gaines had 5 starts with 20 tackles and 4 passes defensed.

In 2015, Sean Smith had 13 starts with 40 tackles and 12 passes defensed. Marcus Peters had 26 passes defensed and 53 tackles.

There's good reason to believe that when healthy, Gaines can be a very solid corner.

What's not to get? You said you were wrong last year.

When our S is playing week 1, why should anyone freak out about a vet taking advantage of being able to skip TC? Read up on his training regimen after chemo. I don't think anyone has to worry about EB coming in late and not up to speed or out of shape. He's not a rookie faced with a learning curve.

Gaines will be a solid #2 CB and I'm not sure why people are freaked out about it. He showed that he could play when he had to fill in for Smith.

Again, you're setting the bar far too low, as if a bunch of Donkey homers are anything you want to emulate.

Was Smith a ballhawk?

I don't care as much about the INT's. That's what we have Marcus Peters for. Just give me good consistent coverage on that side.

Also, I'm not entirely sure where the hype is coming from with Nelson.

He had the one nice breakup against Conley, but gave up 4 TDs in practice. 3 to maclin and 1 to Hill.

I'm not saying he's bad...but I would t say he kicked ass at all.

RunKC 08-07-2016 03:21 PM

The CB's will look good if Dee Ford steps up. Otherwise it could be a long day for the secondary if we don't get pressure.

Especially against a QB like Rivers.

He's been making noise going all the way back to OTA's. That was just one practice you attended, correct?

I'm probably overreacting, but Dee Ford looked lazy as shit yesterday...maybe he had a bug or something, though.

We were watching the DL work during position work and were right next to the port a potty and Dee Ford used it 5 times during practice and after the third one I asked him if he was just trying to get out of practice and he chuckled at it. Then came back 2 more times.

He didn't practice aggressively and didn't look different to me.i hate saying that because I was one of the only guys on here wanting us to draft him and have been on his side...but I don't see a guy that's gonna be majorly improved.

I hope I'm wrong.
