OK, thanks...didn't understand that part.

We could do that, and that'd be ideal, but I'd worry a little about timing. That'd be a lot more rounds, and then it'd start interfering with training camp and injuries and stuff.

I think the scrubs thing would still kick in if you completely run out of players at a position. For example, if you keep 3 QBs on your 53-man roster and they all three get hurt by week 6, you're going to start 10 weeks of scrubs.

Here's a clarification/discussion point for people. Let's say we're done drafting and training camp starts, and some significant guy on your team goes down with a knee in training camp. For the sake of this discussion, assume it's my team and Mario Williams. My assumption is that I can cut Mario and keep 53 players who will actually play (using someone from my remainder round), or I can keep him and know that he's going to take up a roster spot for the year. For ease of administration, I don't want to mess with having an injured reserve or anything, so I think you either have someone on your 53 or you cut them and lose rights to them - nothing in between. Everyone okay with this?

So for example, if you take the Patriots in the remainder round, you'll get all of the Patriots except Tom Brady, Wes Welker, Randy Moss, Richard Seymour, etc. - the guys who are already taken by other owners. If you draft the Chiefs in the remainder round, you'll get...well, most of them. So realistically, it'll be something like 33+40 (camp fodder, journeymen, etc.) +7, which you'll then cut to 53.

I really need to re-read the rules on this draft... total news to me, and the K/P thing... new as well. Wasn't totally understanding the "remainder round".

that sounds good to me

and i think updating the op with the rules would help end the confusion

Yeah, we're still kind of breaking ground on some of these things. The remainder round concept showed up somewhere around Post 500 and seemed to be a better system to stack atop the "scrubs" system.

I didn't think about the K/P strategy until just now. You can certainly draft a K and/or P, though. Personally, I'm not sure I'd base my remainder round pick solely upon getting a K or P, but others may prefer that strategy.

That's a really good idea. Maybe I'll do that.

I think it's going to be very intriguing to hear people's logic about their picks. There are going to be a lot of competing theories about the best way to go.

So, in the remainder round... I could select the Jaguars...

Then, thin out the roster later when it is cut time, just keeping those OL or DL, whatever I want from the Jags, right?

That's just a "catch up" at all positions and I can keep what I want.

Is the remainder round AFTER the rookie draft?

Rain Man 06-12-2009 04:42 PM

Okay, I made a major rewrite of the rules, including everything that has evolved over time and also some changes that make more sense now as we've evolved. If anyone has an issue with any of the changes, let's discuss it, but I think these are all pretty sensible. We're learning as we go.

Yep on paragraphs 1 through 3.

The remainder round will be BEFORE the rookie draft, because in real life you'd have those players before drafting rookies. (Most of them, anyway.)

Rain Man 06-12-2009 05:00 PM

As an example, you draft the following 33 players:

QB
D1
D2

HB

Now you watch the NFL training camps. Most of your picks do fine, but your D2 QB gets arrested with 90 pounds of heroin, your V6 and D5 WRs both blow a knee, and your R5 QB gets cut in training camp. In the meantime, your unknown V25 DT is destroying guards out of nowhere. At the end of training camp, you look at your potential roster and cut it down to 53. You would expect to keep a lot of your D players, most or all of your R players, and some V players will play themselves onto the team. You decide that you'll keep your D5 WR because he's going to come back, but you'll have to eat up a roster spot to do it. Perhaps then your roster looks like this (53 men):

(By the way, you'll assign kick returners too, so keep that in mind.)
