Honestly if this year was a 5 nominee year, I don't even think IB gets a nod.

And what did the Hurt Locker bring that the other war\military movies haven't brought? I loved the Hurt Locker but it isn't a better movie than Saving Private Ryan which didn't win Best Picture.

Sad but probably true.

I'll take the absolute DENIAL of anything precious as a consolation prize.

I think SPR getting passed up is one of the worst mistakes in Oscar history.

Hurt Locker was a good story, onscreen and off. I think that is part of it's success. They like the indie feel.

I don't see that at all. On most prediction sites it was in 3rd behind Avatar and Hurt Locker, with it being the only movie with a chance of beating them. Its movies like Blind Side and District 9 that you wouldn't see in a normal year.

I had no interest in Hurt Locker until tonight. I wanted to see Basterds win myself. Avatar had no business winning.

I'm going to see Hurt Locker soon though.

The Oscars are not meritorious, dirk. Sandra Bullock won one, for ****'s sake. That's like Tom Chambers winning an NBA MVP or giving the Cy Young to Scott Kazmir.

Aside from the technological aspects (for which there are individual categories) what did Avatar bring to the table. Without 3d, Avatar isn't a top 10 movie of all time nor an Oscar BP nom. Fact.

True. If it were five it would have been:

Avatar
Hurt Locker
A Serious Man
Precious
An Education

It's a popularity contest. That fact doesn't change no matter what picture wins, good or bad. And Hurt locker has been the hot pick for months. It's not a surprise at all.

I think it's good. Maybe more people will see the movie (like me - I still haven't and I've wanted to for almost a year now). It's not like Avatar is going to have to give back any of the 2.5 billion dollars it's grossed.

In any previous year, i think the only 5 that would have made it were:

A Serious Man
An Education
Hurt Locker
Avatar/Up (too close to call)
Precious
