I assumed he had a cramp as he came back after the play he missed. Saw someone say something about it, Andy didn't mention it post game.

Gay really seemed to stand out, though. Bolton just did all those Bolton things; always where he was supposed to be and making the right decision. Gay's athleticism, OTOH, was on display in a big way. He seemed to be truly sideline to sideline.

Hell, Bolton had great coverage a few times that I happened to notice, which was supposed to be his weakness.

I don't know. If ever there was going to be a plug and play LB (due to his insane intelligence and instincts), it was Bolton. I'm usually a little leery of Mizzou players in the NFL, but Bolton was pretty clearly going to be a slam dunk.

TLO 09-12-2022 01:07 PM

He kind of reminds me of Derrick Johnson. So does Gay.

That's a good thing.

TLO 09-12-2022 01:08 PM

Come to think of it, the last jersey I bought was Derrick Johnson when I was a kid. I might have to grab a Bolton jersey.

Or at least a solid triple. Kid was always going to have a high floor. Many people were concerned he had a low ceiling - that's really what has turned out to be false more than anything.

boilertiger 09-13-2022 05:42 PM

PFF had him as #2 overall LB this past week.

3rd against the run and 9th against the pass.

What a special player.

Keep in mind Nick wont turn 23 until after the season is done. He is a baby. A big, badass boss baby.

Well…the sun does shine on a dog’s ass every now and then.

I’m of course referring to PPF actually getting a grade correct for once.

TambaBerry 09-13-2022 07:55 PM

ThaVirus 09-14-2022 06:28 AM

Would have to be TJ Watt, I'd think.

I’m glad to see our linebackers as our leading tacklers. Used to be so depressing to see Sorensen lead the team with like 8 tackles.

Our run defense has been so much better this year already.

Maybe. On the first, pretty sure the answer s 'yes,' he got beat. He overcommitted and got beat to the inside, iirc.

On the second, it's hard to say, because I'm not sure he was supposed to be any deeper than he already was. IF he was, then he got beat again, but it sure looks like his assignment was to stay near the LoS, within ten yards of it at a guess.

Bottom line, Bolton is still learning how to play in space; he's not all the way there yet.

OKchiefs 01-02-2023 06:16 PM

Isn't Chenal also primarily a downhill, run-stuffing LB type? Doesn't really make sense to take another like him when we already have Bolton who ideally should be taken off the field on 3rd down.

NJChiefsFan 01-02-2023 06:34 PM

Yeah coverage from our LBs are part of the reason we get gutted over the middle. That and the safety play. Since that isn't on camera a lot and I don't watch the all 22 it's hard for me to claim to know which is the bigger issue.

staylor26 01-02-2023 06:37 PM

Because unlike Bolton, Chenal has the athletic upside to make a much bigger impact on passing downs, whether that be in coverage, rushing/blitzing, or both.

God damn you're clueless.

The rumor from camp was that Chenal was supposed to learn Bolton's position, so he could spell Nick (and maybe eventually takeover?) Chenal has more athleticism, obviously, but came into the draft with no real coverage experience.

right now, he's basically just a run-stuffing/blitzing LB.

With our roster and game planning, it wouldn't shock me if a bunch of teams forfeited against us this year. Why risk injury in a game where you're probably not going to be competitive at all?

JohnnyHammersticks 07-09-2023 03:07 PM

Bolton, Gay, Chenal, Tranquill. Hard to imagine all 4 being on our roster a year from now. Who do you think we move?

I think it will be Gay.

Chieftain 07-09-2023 03:45 PM

A buddy of mine is a Chargers fan and he mentioned Tranquill being slow in pass coverage. He got burnt by Kelce in the last game we played San Diego.
We are very deep at LB so I'm not too worried but it's still an interesting observation.

Bowser 07-09-2023 03:50 PM

To be fair, though - Kelce burns everyone in coverage. He even made Derwin James look slow trying to run him down a few times.

Do you mean "move" as in move on from? Because Gay and Tranquil are neither under contract for 2024, it's entirely possible we lose them both. I think Bolton is the only LB we pay.
