I guess some Brewer players got their panties in a bunch after the 2nd HR. Albert said he wasn’t trying to show the Brewers up, it just happens that way naturally. He’s trying to fire up his teammates and the fans. Being PC or not, this team could use some toughness.
So Marmol said this after the game when asked…. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">“This is our house.” — message Albert Pujols was sending with his celebration after that second homer, per Oliver Marmol. <a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/stlcards?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#stlcards</a></p>— Derrick Goold (@dgoold) <a href="https://twitter.com/dgoold/status/1558919348265287680?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 14, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |

Was at today's game. Great atmosphere. Great game. That second Pujols' drive was enough to make one think of Brad Lidge. Don't think he can do it, but would love him to pass A-Fraud on the HR list. I was afraid his signing would be a PR stunt. I was wrong. The man can still absolutely crush lefty's. Which begs the question, what the heck was Craig Counsell doing? Having Rogers face Goldschmidt, Arenado and Pujols is Mike Matheny level thinking. Wonder if the Brewers miss Hader yet? |
I can't believe that was the one game I attended, and with great seats to boot (154 row 2). My wife and I decided to go on a lark on Friday night, and only after she bought the tickets did I realize that they were facing a lefty so that Pujols would start. To see perhaps the last great game from the best player the franchise has produced in my lifetime is absolutely unforgettable.

I know they said it was Only like 420 feet but if that outside glass wasn’t there, it would have went far. Congrats on seeing Pujols in person perform on a day like he was in his HOF worthy heyday. What a cool experience. |

Wouldn’t mind Albert coming back again as a bench player. The guy can still clearly hit lefties. WTF did that shitty ass Angels franchise do to him for 10 years.

Albert Pujols was my favorite player since Bob Gibson. We could all see the decline starting. I was okay with him leaving to the DH league. I just didn’t want him to come back and embarrass himself flaying around at the plate striking out.
It makes me so happy to have watched him this last week. Reminds me when he was the best hitter in the game on his way to being the best RH hitter in the history of the game. The Pujols we saw in his prime is for at least a week, was the Pujols we saw have the best 11 years of baseball ever. <blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">HOME RUN NO. 690 FOR ALBERT PUJOLS IS OH SO GRAND!!!<br><br>TV: Bally Sports Midwest<br>Stream: <a href="https://t.co/T19nzOKKEf">https://t.co/T19nzOKKEf</a><a href="https://twitter.com/hashtag/STLCards?src=hash&ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">#STLCards</a> <a href="https://t.co/LPQfcwchmi">pic.twitter.com/LPQfcwchmi</a></p>— Bally Sports Midwest (@BallySportsMW) <a href="https://twitter.com/BallySportsMW/status/1560333417648201729?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">August 18, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |
Pujols had to leave St. Louis - his body couldn't hold up at 1b anymore.
But you do wonder if he would've made a few choices differently, could he be chasing Aaron right now? Bonds? As recently as 2016 he was still a dangerous hitter. He was among the league leaders in quality of contact that season - the stats just didn't reflect it because the AL West has 3 pretty awful environments to hit in, including his home park. |
Getting our monies worth for Bader. He still has another year of control, right?

And he'll do well in STL. The Yankees park and bad defense were a pretty bad match for him. And he was still largely effective. With the Cardinals he'll get an easier division, better home park and much better defense. If he can stay at 93-94 mph with his fastball and 91-92 with the sinker, that big curve and decent enough changeup will all play nicely off each other. Probably the kind of guy you should approach with a 3 year, $51 million sort of extension in the off-season. Then again, Marcus !#@$ing Stroman got 3 years $71 million so he may just laugh that figure off. You might have to get nearer to what Roriguez got from the Tigers and offer 5 years. Maybe you can get out of that for 5/$90 million? Edmonds made a good point about guys freezing on his sinker last night - he throws the 4-seamer down and it looks like a sinker that will dive out of the zone (because he was heavy sinker in NY). Now he's throwing the 4-seamer down, they expect it to dart out of the zone but then it stays up a bit and catches the bottom of the zone for a called strike. I don't understand how anyone doesn't like Edmonds on the call. That guy teaches me something every damn day. And I guarantee that the people that dislike him know less about the game than I do. They would benefit a great deal by absorbing what Edmonds has to say. But you have to bring Montgomery back - this staff is in ROUGH shape come 2024. Mikolas, Flahery and Wainwright are all UFAs on/before then. You're looking at Matz, Hudson and...uh...natch. Liberatore don't look like he's the guy. Maybe Thompson? You'd need Graceffo and McGreevy to fly through the system. Hence probably won't be ready. at this rate Pallante would be pencilled in as your 3rd starter. |

I absolutely love Edmonds in the booth. People that don't like him can't separate his personal bullshit from his job No matter what the upside there is no scenario where they should even entertain making Flaherty a long term offer. Injured cancer is all that kid is. |
Edmonds is great

The issue is he started dealing with plantar fasciitis in 2013. And no, I don't think he'd be chasing Bonds or Aaron now. Maybe Ruth if 2020 wasn't a shortened season. |

In terms of hitters/position players, I'd put the following above him: Ruth Bonds Mays Aaron Cobb Then also throw in guys like Hornsby, Mantle, Ted Williams, Musial. I think he's a top 10 hitter of all time. Not sure I'd say top 5 based off the second half of his career. |

I’d argue top 5 has a good case. |

A lot of those top players mentioned were more consistent throughout their career. But it is up to each person judging. When you look at Pujois' splits between St. Louis and Anaheim/California/Los Angeles Angels, it is like two different players. Especially in BA and OBP. |

We avoided having to witness Pujols embarrass himself this year. We were able to witness Pujols back in a Cardinals uniform as a "real" contributor to a playoff team, not a publicity stunt to sell tickets. At times it was 2005 again. He murdered some pitch's just like he did off Lidge. Lets take the win. And after this season, I'd be so disappointed if he doesn't go into the HOF as a Cardinal. |

**** that cheating Bonds and his blown up head due to steroids. There will be only Aaron and the Babe in front of him. |
Well that's a fun game.
Beating the Cubs is always a good time, but a 1-0 shutout with the Yankee ex-pat on the bump and Pujols providing the only run of the game is just a nice little wrinkle. I'm fairly certain Pujols could hit lefties at 47 at this point. These are zero effort swings and it's clear the hands are still following the eyes just fine. |

Prior to the trade deadline in July, 2011 I met my brother (who lives in St. Louis) in Cincinnati to catch a Cards game there (they won). Shortly after the Cards traded away a young CFer for pitching help. Of course we all know the Cards eventually went on a late season streak to get the WC and eventually win the World Series.
This past July, I met my brother in Cincinnati to catch a game just prior to the trade deadline (it was the only game they won that weekend). Later they traded away a young CFer for pitching help. Just saying... |
Anyone ever go to a baseball game by themselves? This weekend is probably my last opportunity to make it to STL to bid Albert farewell.
But man tickets and hotels are expensive as all hell. Plus a 4 hour car ride by myself sounds about as boring as boring can be. |
Quote:
Hit a grand slam off the Cubs. But, you should go. May see a positive moment that you can say, I was there. |

Every hotel in downtown STL is north of $300 for the night. I know I'm paying a premium for a good series, a Saturday game, and a farewell tour but it's looking like it will run me $600+ to make all the arrangements. I've seen Albert play many times. I'm still pissed the KC series was in April during shitty weather |
