Earl Thomas has been named the Chiefs' new defensive coordinator

It would show you that Veach wants his guy played over the Dorsey guy...that would be a bad sign.

I think I speak for everyone when I say that I’m worried about our front offices ability to draft quality defensive players.

.

I'm more fearful of a January post-season collapse because KC doesn't have an answer for Gronk.

This is an opportunity to land a perennial all-pro at the teams weakest position...it a rare combination of desperate need/availability.

That's always been my plan.

Where you and I (and others) differ is in the outcome. A lot of people won't be truly happy until Sutton is gone. For me, I just don't think it's that important. Get better players in here and the defense will improve.

Here are just 3 things Sutton does that annoys the hell out of me:

1) Goes into Prevent too early and plays the clock game. (See both playoff collapses)

2) On certain down/distance (3rd & long?), we should be blitzing and jamming WR's at the LOS.

3) CB's should NOT be playing 12 yards off the ball when it's 3rd and short.

He did this even when we DID have good talent.

Sam Mellinger is being dismissive to me on Twitter and it is triggering me because he's so wrong on this.

I like Sam, I don't like being mad at Sam.

I am Sam.

wait what now

has Sam been a fan of KC for 40 years?...if not, he cant speak.

Chiefs need to be in SB or bust mode THIS year.

And here's my take on those things:

1) I think part of this pattern comes from Andy Reid, not from Sutton.

2) All teams run soft zones on 3rd down and long. You'll see it multiple times every Sunday. You saw it last night with Pittsburgh and Tampa. That's a valid and VERY effective defense, when your players can tackle. I know people hate it and want him to be more aggressive but he's actually making the smarter call. Players just cannot execute.

3) He has to. Our corners can't makeup ground. If you miss the jam at the line on 3rd and short (and our corners do), that's a touchdown.

I know people hate Bob Sutton but I've been watching zone defenses on the college and pro levels for 35 years. He's not stupid and these problems are absolutely being cause by a lack of talent.

Agreed! The only thing I really dislike is dropping Houston into coverage. Backfires almost every time.

Looking at that 2019 free agency list of ours and damn....

A trade for Earl doesn't just set us up for a run this year, but maybe even more so for next year. They could load this roster by next Fall, even after trading for him.

All of this +

Breeland Speaks, Terrance Smith, and Eric Murray need to sit on the bench all game long, except when on ST.
