Erving isn't a center.

He is a damn good linemen that can play all 5 spots on the line. I can't remember who it was, but there was a scout on Colin Cowherd the other day that compared Erving to Walter Jones...now, I don't know if that's legit or not, but he was making valid correlations between the two as prospects.

Getting Erving at 18 would be an outstanding pick.

So go look at the draft and tell us who you would have taken.

Drafting for need puts you in a position to have to overpay people down the road because you have zero depth.

Like it or not, they need to build around the strengths and weaknesses of Alex Smith to give us a legit shot at winning something significant in the coming seasons. The first step to that is building a monster OL to open holes for Charles and Davis to run through to open up the passing game and to give Alex time to make sound decisions and to let plays develop.

The more I think about it, the more I love the pick.

Russel uses his mobility to buy time for receivers to get open down field.

Alex uses his to pick up first downs with his legs.

Who knows, though...maybe that's a product of his lacking trust in his receivers.

There is no ILB in this draft that can play all 3 downs like DJ does. At least not without multiple seasons of growth and development.

It's why we're probably not going to address the position until the late rounds, which is wise given the players in this class
