That would be awesome

It would be great, and more than that, historic for KC, as both teams haven’t ever really been good at the same time, let alone playoff contenders. Had some overlap in 2013-2015, and a bit in the early 90’s, but that’s pretty much it.

Royals were actually doing well in 2017, then fell off a cliff at the tail end of the season. They made a flurry of moves to solidify the ‘pen among others, and every deal turned into shit. I’m still convinced that had Yordano not died, we would have had another playoff run in 2017. He had a shaky 2016, but I truly feel he was on the verge of coming into his own. So sad that we’ll never know…

Yeah, I’m interested to see how he performs in his rehab. The season is still so young it’s very hard to know how things will shake out. If Marsh continues his run, he isn’t going anywhere. It’s crazy that Wacha is the weak link right now. I expect him to improve, but if he doesn’t, it’s nice to know we could have someone competent to take his place, perhaps in Bubic and/or Lynch. Moreover, if all continues to go well, and we’re still in contention come the deadline, I fully expect some deals to be made which could include all of the aforementioned names.

GabyKeepsMeWarm 05-12-2024 07:48 PM

It’s been 35 years since KC had a 20 game winner. Appier would have done it 1993 if he ever had any run support. Cone was well on his way in 1994 before the strike. Seth Lugo is on pace for 23 wins. A lot has to happen to be a 20 game winner, and we’ve got a long way to go. The dude is a legit Cy Young contender right now and just goes about his business in such an understated way. He’s like the ****ing terminator out there. Can he do it?

If the season ended today, I think he’s the CY. Long way to go, as you said. I heard the other day that at this rate he should hit his career high in innings pitched for a season by the AS break. It will be interesting to see how he and the staff manage his stamina.

Yeah, he’s had a terrific career thus far, mostly as a middle innings reliever. And now he’s a full time starter at 34? I can’t come up with a comp. But he just looks so relaxed out there, and I hate to compare him to Maddux, but that’s truly what he looks like. This rotation has been sooo refreshing. We have a legit rotation for the first time in a decade, but more than that, this might be the best rotation we’ve had in about 30 years, to the point that every guy not only gives the team a chance to win, but actually excel and dominate.

Makes it sooooo much easier and enjoyable to watch when you’ve got a truly professional starting staff. I think after today’s “quality start” by Lugo, the team now has 18 or 19? And this is after 42 games. Did we have as many QS’s in all of 2023? What a remarkable turnaround.

Honestly, I’d blame lack of run support on days that he pitches. But that’s just me.

Seth Lugo has been incredible to start this season, but one thing he hadn’t been doing was striking people out. He had only 36 strikeouts in 51 2/3 innings heading into his start against the Angels on Sunday, the actual lowest strikeout rate of his career. (It’s why his FIP was 3.78 despite a 1.74 ERA.) Lugo apparently decided he’d had enough of that narrative: He struck out a career-high 12 in eight innings of one-run mastery. If the Royals win Monday and the Guardians lose to the Rangers, Kansas City would be in first place in the AL Central for the first time this late in the season since 2016.

Comparing Mahomes to Brady is easy because we all lived through both. A lot of these names we recognize. How the hell are we ever going to be able to determine whether BWJ was better than Honus Wagner?

There's an argument for Wagner as the greatest player of all time. He was big, strong and fast, and while he didn't hit many home runs because he played in the dead ball era, if you transported him to 2016 he would undoubtedly hit for a lot of power. He was also one of the best old players ever, winning six of his eight batting titles after turning 30. In the first Hall of Fame induction, he received the same number of votes as Babe Ruth (although fewer than Ty Cobb). -- Schoenfield

From Baseball Prospectus

Blake Mitchell, C, Kansas City Royals (Low-A Columbia): 3-4, HR, 2 R, 2 RBI.
A lefty-swinging prep catcher who was taken eighth overall in the most recent draft, Mitchell snuck onto the Top 101 thanks to his extremely high upside. Prep catchers do tend to be an extremely high-variance demographic, of course, due both to their high level of positional risk and the fact that they’re literal teenagers. Mitchell is a very good athlete whose catching has graded out well enough in a small sample, but his .220/.383/.380 line entering Wednesday indicates that he is still adjusting to pro pitching.

The minors is still pretty shit, but you can't blame the new regime for that. They've only had one draft. I'll give them a couple years to see how they build it.

Good article, and I agree, they gotta do something if everything they mentioned continues.

Nightfyre 05-17-2024 11:57 AM

I feel like the article doesn't actually solve the problem. Bringing up Waters doesn't solve anything. His slash line is inflated highly but his .400ish babip. His expected results suck even for the minors.

If you want to improve the outfield production, you are going to either have to solve the riddles confronting your existing players or go get one externally.

Wasn't ever really much thought that he wouldn't.

Skenes is gonna be real good. I mean, until a 'performance optimizer' gets ahold of him, tweaks his mechanics to make him throw 102 and then he breaks down the same as every other pitcher in the game right now.

Getting awfully bummed out by the number of young pitchers that get turned to hamburger out there.

The velocity and spin rate that the teams are looking for is destroying arms. The teams don't care because they'll just bring up the next guy plus it keeps salaries down because they aren't going to pay guys with an arm that's shot. I'm surprised that the union hasn't done more to protect the players and their earning potential.

It was back in 2015 that I was following the rise of a Cardinal prospect named Alex Reyes. Kid threw 96 with a waterfall curve and hellish movement on his breaking stuff.

He came into camp throwing 101 and everyone was jerking themselves off. And the MOMENT I saw him pitch, I knew he was doomed. Because I, a stupid layperson, could see that he was shoulder-loading. Said it on this very board. I said "man, the Cardinals have him late off so he can add velocity and they've brought his arm slot down (wrecked his curve) and it's going to absolutely destroy him..."

He goes out there smoking minor leaguers and the Cardinals are furiously patting themselves on the back. And again, I'm just sitting here saying "You guys have absolutely ****ed this up. Best pitching prospect we've had in a decade and he's a ticking timebomb..."

He was. He thrown 145 big league innings in 5 years, hasn't pitched since 2021 and is pretty much out of the sport by 29. And had they just let him live at 96/97 with that big curveball and his change he'd have been no worse than a #2 starter for a decade. I saw this trend coming when the Cardinals were so damn proud of themselves for doing it with Reyes almost a decade ago.

If you can take a guy that throws 91 and get him to 95 - I get it. You've taken a AAAA guy and made him a big leaguer, if only for a few years.

But when teams are taking these blue chip arms that naturally throw in the mid-high 90s and then work them over to get to 100+ it's just asinine to me. These guys were going to be really good AND durable. And you've simply traded all possibility for a healthy career for 3 good years of increased velocity.

Hate hate hate hate the way truly good young pitching is handled these days. A guy like Shane Baz, a 3-pitch guy with pristine fastball command, should've been developed to work at 94/95 using command and movement to get outs. He had MORE than enough stuff to be great doing that. But the Rays cranked him up to 11 and immediately broke him.

EDIT: Here it is from May of 2015:
Spoiler!

It's really not hard to find velocity - we've known how to do it for awhile. Teams have just decided they don't give a good god damn about the long-term viability of these arms anymore and then bemoan how many of these kids are breaking down.

It's crocodile tear bullshit.

The most amazing thing the union ever did was convince teams that arm injuries are inevitable.

Teams sign these pitchers to 5 year deals knowing at LEAST one of them is a write-off. They aren't signing these guys to these contracts expecting health over the life of them. They're just amortizing the lost season over the life of the deal.

Like I said - all crocodile tears. Teams don't care about arm health. They publicly say they do and they're looking for ways to keep their guys healthy - they don't. They KNOW how to make guys a hell of a lot healthier than they are. They simply don't bother.

And because everyone breaks down, even the agents don't care much. Hell, a Tommy John surgery is almost a selling point. "Hey, he had his TJ surgery 2 seasons ago - you probably have 4 good years on that elbow until it lets go again..."

It's just gross.

Fine but that’s a low hanging fruit move. Need someone with balls to do something about Melendez and Outfroe

I think the problem there...is what are the other options. Waters? Sure. Cross isn't ready yet.

We'll be in the market for an OF bat no matter what...but it's slim pickings right now.

That's an understatement. Yeah, next six weeks are nooo joke. Cleveland twice, Dodgers, Yankees, and a bunch of teams hovering around .500. Though we do get Miami and Oakland sprinkled in. Thankfully, July looks like it should be a breath of fresh air. I'd be totally okay with going .500 in June.

That's the "men from the boys" point for me. If we come out of June over .500 then make room for me on the all in bandwagon. We are doing a great job right now building cushion. This is a very important next two weeks to continue to add to the cushion. If we enter June 12-13 games over .500, we can sustain a bad stretch in that gauntlet.

I'd call up Waters and have him play everyday for awhile. Use Renfroe as what he has become....a defensive replacement. Melendez can go back to Omaha or be a part of a trade if some other team thinks they can fix him.

Maybe it's the old adage of the camera adds 10 pounds. When i saw him play a couple weeks ago in San Antonio, he did not look frumpy by any means. If anything, he looked like a youngster who could still fill out a bit.

This morning's blurb from Baseball Prospectus:

Gavin Cross, OF, Kansas City Royals (Double-A Northwest Arkansas): 3-4, R, HR, 3 RBI, SB.
Selected 9th overall in 2022, Cross looked like the safest of safe picks—an advanced college bat that, despite not having the loudest of tools, still had enough contact and power to be an easy everyday outfielder. However, the offensive production cratered last year in the Midwest League, with Cross limping to a .203/.298/.378 slashline on the season. It’s beginning to look like the 2023 experience was just a bump in the road, the first taste of adversity for a polished hitter. Cross has rebounded nicely this year, looking again like the best position-player prospect in Kansas City’s organization.

Royals are one of the hottest teams in the league right now……unfortunately one of those other teams is Cleveland. And they have a powder puff-esque next 10 games.

GeorgeZimZam 05-22-2024 03:49 PM

Crazy that we are 6th in all of MLB by winning percentage.

And 4th overall by run differential.

These getaway games are the absolute best. Another songbird day to sit and watch these guys play their asses off. It was like being in San Diego (minus the beaches and greatest sushi).

I’m still in the “no expectations” mode I was on opening day. And the Royals made their ace look like Milt ****ing Wilcox. I remember when they had THE team in the division for darn near a decade. But they couldn’t bring home the prize.

This is just such an enjoyable early ride. Instead of worrying about the teams coming in, try to enjoy how well this is going.

GabyKeepsMeWarm 05-22-2024 05:15 PM

I don't want to take anything away from Cleveland. Those ****ers just keep winning, and that's the name of the game.

I think they've been a tad lucky, though. They're 6-2 in extra inning games, which is a bit of a stretch, both in wins, and the number of times they've already gone to extras.

They've got a few hitters, but they're pretty comparable to ours, for the most part.

Their starting pitching is nothing special, and that might be the thing that bites them in the ass eventually as that bullpen starts to get worn down. Because that's been the biggest key to their season thus far: their bullpen has been very good.

And they've got a below average defense.

Right now, I honestly think we're the better team, but we've just go out there and ****ing do it. This whole division has owned our asses for the past several years. It's time we turn that right the **** around. We'll finally get our first shot at Cleveland in a couple weeks.

And looking ahead further, we've got Cleveland coming to town for a four game set the last weekend of June. If both teams are still neck and neck, that stadium should be rocking with a playoff atmosphere.

It's been a GREAT Spring so far, and I think it's gonna be a very fun Summer. LFG.

Why Royals is good understand how I do not why good baseball in 2024 blown is mind how Royals good

tk13 05-22-2024 06:14 PM

Cleveland's secret is the bullpen, that's not a secret for anyone who watched the Royals 10 years ago, great bullpens can mask a lot of other weaknesses because if you can get any kind of lead you can ride them to the finish. Cleveland's bullpen has been great. Clase is a cyborg and he's having that kind of season. Cade Smith closed out the game today and was throwing gas. Scott Barlow would probably still be our closer if he was here, but he might be Cleveland's 5th or 6th best reliever so far.

Royals do need another OF bat, but the most important piece might be a reliever or two who other teams will fear once we take Ragans or Lugo out.

Agreed. I'd like to find another reliable reliever, because when it comes to volatility, the reliever positions are usually it. However, perhaps maybe Lynch or Bubic could be that type of guy. It worked for Hochevar, so who's to say it can't work on either one of these two?

Davis was also a starter, but his career thrived when he became a reliever and was nearly unhittable, especially with that cutter.

And Marsh is just ineligible to be on the ERA leaderboard, otherwise he's 12th in the AL.

The rotation is ****ing great.

If we had a C+/B- outfielder, a B reliever, and a B+/A- reliever on this team, in addition to what we already have, we'd be ****ing nails. Would love to see someone(s) emerge into those roles from within, but if it doesn't happen within the next month, how willing will we be to make some difficult decisions and make a deal?

And I reaaaally wonder if/when Jordan Lyles is ever coming back. Having him in the bullpen would/could really clear a few things up.

There will of course be a regression...just hopefully guys who have underperformed like Melendez, Frazier and Renfroe become better to offset it.

Undoubtedly, there will be. But it's friggen fun at the same time. I'd also ad Pasquawatamietomatoe to that list of people that will improve. He struggled for a long stretch which killed his numbers. But is improving back to what i would expect.

Gavin Cross turning back into what they thought he was going to be would be one hell of a boost for 2025 and beyond.

Overall, the minor leagues have had a pretty nice start to the season. KC has some trade chips it could use now.

C.J. Alexander, Chandler Champlain, Bubic, Lynch, Noah Cameron, Eric Cerantola, even Nick Loftin... all pieces that could have some nice value in trade.

The teams that are bad don't really have much to offer for the most glaring need - a LH-hitting OF with some pop - but bullpen reinforcement is always an option.

Bullpen pieces can always be added for minimal prospects.
