Don't know if it was the motivation to do so at the time, but reconfiguring this track to the current 3/4 mile D shape almost certainly saved the place from North Wilkesboro-like oblivion. The old 1/2 mile oval was just boring, without any of the quirks that kept Martinsville and Bristol around.
