KANSAS CITY - Mike Shanahan may not have a new job after all. After reports surfaced the former Denver Broncos head coach was close to taking the top job with the Kansas City Chiefs, those reporting that have backtracked.

ESPN now reports only that the Chiefs are targeting Shanahan for their head coaching job after the team fired Herm Edwards on Friday. Initially, ESPN reported that a deal was near between the Chiefs and Shanahan.

Edwards was fired after going 15-34 in three seasons. He still had one year left in his original four-year, $12 million contract.

The NFL Network's Adam Schefter, who recently finished writing a book with Shanahan, maintains Shanahan will not be taking the job with the Chiefs and is not considering it.

"They are not near a deal. They are not near a deal right now, they were not near a deal yesterday, they will not be near a deal tomorrow. Mike Shanahan will not be the head coach of the Kansas City Chiefs," Schefter told 9NEWS. "All the people in Denver can stop worrying or stop talking about it, it's not happening. I know there have been national reports to the other effect. I'm here to tell you just the opposite, it's not going to happen."

Schefter says he has spoken with Shanahan directly about it.

"I speak to Mike regularly, there has been nothing in his tone or in his message that has given me any indication that he will be the coach of the Kansas City Chiefs. I know for a fact they've not had contact to this point. The Chiefs may in fact reach out to him in the coming days and even then I firmly believe it will not change anything," Schefter said.

The Broncos have hired new head coach and former New England Patriots offense coordinator Josh McDaniels to replace Shanahan.

When he was fired, Shanahan still had three years left on his contract, worth about $20 million.

I am laughing my arse off at how much this really bothers donkey fans especially TJ. THe poor jerk is out to have a heart attack. Shefter can deny all he want but read his words...

The flip side of that Shefter does not say that Mike says he will NOT be the CHiefs Head Coach. Whether he is or isn't doesn't matter to me, but to see some donkey fans all up in the air about it is pure comedy.

And yet, "Shanahan to Chiefs" rumor threads have gotten over 60,000 views on this Chiefs board the last few days. I guess it matters a little bit to some of you.

Yep, oddly, the identity of our new HC does matter a little bit to some of us...

"Shanahan could not be reached for comment and has not responded to text message inquiries. A Chiefs spokesman had no comment."

Denver fans seem to be frothing at the mouth by the mere rumor that Shanahan may end up in KC.

Why are Denver fans obsessed with the Chiefs coaching situation? No one here gave a rats ass about your coaching situation earlier this month.

Very interesting.

I'm still laughing about your Warriors comment-that was righteous.

When Shanahan ultimately takes the job in KC who is going to be more bitter... Adam "Shanny's Enema" Schefter, or the pathetic Denver fans gracing this board who obviously still have affection for him?

The Bad Guy 01-24-2009 10:26 AM

This would be real, real easy for Shanahan to squash.

All he would have to do is release a statement that "I'm not coaching in 2009."

He's not doing that. He's not returning calls or text messages.

Dick Vermeil wasn't returning anything in 2001 either.
