Since DJBill is holding out on fan fiction…let me clear some stuff up for you guys…
A Clark Hunt story that sheds light on what’s going on at 1 arrowhead drive and an exciting update on the CJ95 situation. Let’s start at the beginning. It’s 2012 and banners are flying over the stadium. His team is a laughing stock and fans want wholesale changes. Clark wants the franchise to bring titles back to KC. He had previously paid for the best GM prospect on the market. The “architect of the Tom Brady era”. But that mirage was quickly fading and Clark needed to make big changes to bring a winning culture back to his fathers team. Money was no issue for Clark and he knew Andy Reid was going to be available. He wanted Reid to be able to take over the KC Chiefs and restore that winning culture that would make his father proud. Once Andy got to town, he refused to let anything be a barrier to having him stay in KC. But he wanted to learn everything he could so he didn’t repeat the mistake from Pioli. He didn’t even fire Pioli until Andy got to debrief him. But he wanted more structure to this new front office he was putting together. He wanted to play a role in it snd offer his input into major decisions. He’s a Goldman Sachs level intellectual and feels he can help the team with an outside perspective that comes with unlimited resources. From there, Clark let Andy choose his staff (again, no financial limit to staff funding. Just make this a first class organization top to bottom) and did the same with choosing the next GM he would work with. His caveat would be that GM and HC report directly to him so he can assess situations independently. That was to not re-create a Marty/Carl situation Lamar used to talk about. Where he always felt there needed a mediator before it broke down. Clark could hold his employees accountable independent of each other. In comes Dorsey. Coming from GB originally and still having ties there, Andy always heard amazing things about John and his ability to scout talent. Expecting a nearly complete roster turnaround, Andy chose John to head up his front office and brought over one of his top scouts from Philly that he knew first hand had a great eye for talent. Money is no object. Andy then constructed one of the largest and most talented coaching staffs in league history to develop the incoming talent these guys would bring in. Again, money is no object. Clark began to warm up his pen to write a 15m signing bonus check to Dwayne Bowe…he wanted to make sure $ wasn’t going to be a detractor to his family’s team getting back to greatness. Whatever John wanted, John got. So John went shopping. They gave Bowe a huge deal…traded for Alex Smith and gave him an 18m signing bonus …along with a couple other bigger deals we signed that required tons of cash…and they went to the playoffs in year 1. Even with Hali and Houston getting hurt before the bye. The money is no object angle seemed to be working. In the next offseasons, the big checks kept getting written and playoff trips were becoming routine. Justin Houston got 20.5m signing bonus…Eric Berry got a 20m check. Veterans were extended for top money…even mid level guys were given big deals (cough cough Sorenson) but the more that was spent..it wasn’t correlating to playoff wins. Jeremy Maclin was given a huge FA deal and cost the team a draft pick and a black eye. Bowe went to Sonic. Houston destroyed his knee. Berry got cancer and then had endless lower leg problems. Maclin hit the wall. All the big $ checks he wrote weren’t equating to lombardis or even Lamar Hunt trophies. Cutting Maclin without Andy knowing about it was enough to put John on the hot seat. John making the handshake deal prior to the 2017 draft with the Bills without Clark signing off, was about it. Shortly after the draft, Clark and Dorsey had a falling out…even though he loved Mahomes (as did Andy) he thought it was very unprofessional of him to make a franchise changing love like that after them having a conversation about ROI previously was made clear that Clark wanted to be part of any major franchise altering moves, going forward. John basically tried walking out of the office at that point and Clark made the choice in the moment to remove John as the GM. Citing top 20 dead money nearly every year and not getting things approved through Clark. This was it. Clark immediately went yo Andy’s office and asked him if he felt the team should promote Veach (who Clark loves) or to look outside the building and Andy vouched for Brett snd a few hours later, the three sat together and a new contract was written up and they promoted BV to the GM role. Clark was very clear that he wouldn’t limit $, but that he required himself to be involved in any negotiations that involved 10m signing bonuses or greater. Clark was well aware of Veaches thoughts on Patrick and knew the franchises focus was building a team Pat could take over in a year. This is where we all say “**** you dee Ford” together for costing Pat his superbowl appearance in his first year starting. Veach was/is a big swing guy. Very confident and he convinced Clark (against his better judgement) that making a blockbuster trade and extension for Frank Clark while also going out and getting a premium WR for Pat was the best course of action. Clark had a long conversation with Brett about how Bowe/Maclin turned out and how he wasn’t 100% on board with signing Sammy Watkins, but Brett convinced him it’s a good gamble to get what could be an elite WR that’s ideal for Andy’s system and at a discount due to health. The conversation also lead to Clark also not being 100% on board with the Frank Clark trade and extension, citing the past contract with Houston and how it ended up burning the team. But he also was clear he will not veto either deal if that’s the vision Brett had. But wanted him to be informed. Nothing ever got heated. It was a great in depth conversation about ROI. 3/5 next super bowls, a couple rings, some trophies and Brett bought a lot of credit with Clark Hunt by his results. Then the team is trying to give Tyreek a third contract and has a bargain deal ready yo go when the Raiders trade for Adams and screw up the WR market by giving him a historic contract. Tyreeks agent called Veach within minutes saying his client wanted that level of deal or they wanted to be able to find a team they could trade for him and pay him on that level. Veach/Andy/Clark had a 2 hour long conversation where Bowe, Maclin and Watkins all got discussed and they all decided that making calls and trading Tyreek was best for the team. They weighed in that they needed to likely decide between Tyreek snd CJ95 as there was no way after Pats mega deal they could afford both on top of market deals for the long term and still fill out a championship roster. And they won the Super Bowl by making the right choice. During the scouting combine, CJ95s agent had a 30 minute long conversation with BV about his client wanting sn extension but wants to be in KC to finish his career a Chief and wants to be paid as the second highest DT in history in this extension. They knew a handful of DTs were going to be getting extensions this offseason so both sides figured finding a fair $$ amount for the new deal would be easy to identify market price. Both sides knew CJ95 was the second best DT and deserved that respect deal. Then, the opposite happened as the previous year. Instead of an “Adams resetting the position market in a huge way”, the DTs signed for far less than the agent thought and that complicated things. The market set with a huge gap between DT1 (Donald 31.7m) and DT2 (Williams 24m) and Clark/Veach/Andy worked together to offer 25.5m per year and 45m guaranteed to offer CJ95 what he wanted. To be the second highest paid DT. CJ95s agent responded that his client wouldn’t play another snap for KC unless he gets 30m per on a 4 year deal with 50m fully guaranteed. The conversation got a little crazy snd Brett ended up cutting the conversation off fairly quickly and Andy/BV/Clark sat down to discuss course of action. Brett wanted to negotiate and get a deal done, Andy basically said this ones up to you and Clark wanted to stay firm at their offer and to make it time sensitive…to be off the table after 4 days to decide if they will accept or not… and that’s what Brett decided to do after playing all the way through the scenario and talking through all options. Katz turned down the offer and the stalemate began. Radio silence began. Neither side talked for almost a month. Even then, no movement was made and the stalemate resumed. Brett/Hunt/Andy talked through this “it could go worst case scenario” and decided that if they held firm and waiting out the storm, they had the long term leverage that Chris didn’t. Once Chris got hit with the classification of tag that would hold up his $ and hurt future year earnings, he called his Katz and told him to call Brett and negotiate. Chris reads fan sites frequently (AP mostly, not CP) and once he read about how it could play out and his agent is botching it, the conversation between him and Katz wasn’t as friendly as previous conversations he was made to believe they had KC by the nuts. I’m told that the deal will be finalized in the next 24-48 hours (based on structure) but that KC put the offer back on the table and came up to 26.8m aav on a 3 year extension worth 80.4m with 50m fully guaranteed at signing. KC clears 11 million in cap space on the deal and it will be structured to give team flexibility each year of the deal. CJ has already been sent a defensive game plan for detroit and is in tip top shape ready to go! Brett and Andy have talked directly to CJ95 and everyone is looking forward to announcing the deal Friday late afternoon. It’s a done deal, fellas. CJ95 is a Chief the next 4 seasons and I think we got a bargain while also setting a president that we won’t be bullied in contract negotiations. Take it for what it’s worth. |

Matt Derrick pointed out that Jones not reporting actually made the Chiefs lives much easier wrt to maneuvering cap money for the 53-man. So there's your tinfoil hat that both sides know what they're doing, and Jones just wanted to skip camp.

So camp skipped. Preseason done What he waiting for?
Just need some more drama? Or he's waiting for this thread to hit 500... :hmmm: |
I see this comment as little more than Jones’ earlier claim he would never play anywhere else but KC. It’s a PR move to shift blame if it doesn’t work out.

Here's the link to Veach talking about it:
