We need to start Tyler Greene at 3b and keep Freese on the bench.

The moment we get a RISP, you pinch hit for whoever is batting, even Pujols. Let Freese take his crack at it and hope we can get a run. Then rely on a solo HR later and hope the pitching can hold up for a 2-1 win.

It's genius.

Hey, they scored two!

That's a 100% increase over what you'll give them credit for.

Granted, the 2nd was unearned and the first was because a Philly fan ran out on the field and rattled Hamels, but still...

What really pisses me off is that I'm going to have to listen to the damn East Coast heads yack about how the Phillies are clearly the class of the NL now.

Dammit, what the **** were these guys doing this week? That's 3 of the most listless, haphazard and uninspired games you will ever see consecutively. At no point after the first game of the series did I get the impression that anyone outside of David Freese, Adam Wainwright and Brady Penny gave a **** about winning a ballgame.

DJ's left nut 05-06-2010 01:42 PM

Men on 1st and 2nd, Holliday grounds to 2b.

So to recap

1st inning; man on 3rd -- Grounds to SS
4th inning; nobody on -- single to CF
5th inning; bases loaded -- K
7th inning; men on 1st and 2nd -- Grounds to 2b.

0/3 w/ RISP, 6 LOB, not a single one of those ABs would have produced a run w/ less than 2 outs. His lone offensive 'contribution' was a soft single to center whereupon he was immediately stranded at 1b.

Now that, kiddos, is the definition of hollow offense. The only thing to improve on it would be a solo HR in the 9th.

Though I'm kinda hoping that he can ground out with a runner on 1b to end the game. That way he will have hit for the mythical "LOB Cycle". W/ the runner at 3b for the triple, men on 1st and 2nd for the double, bases loaded for the GS. C'mon Shat, you can do it!

Chief Henry 05-06-2010 01:45 PM

Matt Holiday has been a huge disapointment after his first 2 weeks in a Cardinals uniform.

It is a little amusing how much trouble soft tossing leftys can give this team and this trend seems to have lasted through many roster overhauls and changes of hitting coaches.

Youare correct but it's only possible if they can get Holliday to pull his head out. I swear that ****in guy will hit .300 but he'll hit.078 with RISP. He'll end the season with 30 HR's and 28 of them will be solo shots.

Sure, we can't win a WS without Holliday hitting, not just because of his bat but teams just won't throw to Pujols either. You take Pujols and Holliday out we are done but so is every other team if you take out their #3 and #4 hitters. Holliday has a long history of hitting a baseball, he will come around. I don't think he has gotten fat and lazy with the contract. Everything I've read is that he is a hard worker in practice, takes extra practice alongside Pujols etc.

And we got swept in the playoffs because Matt Holliday couldn't make a catch that any Bantam League outfielder could.

And we didn't historically own the Dodgers save for the playoffs. That's a little different than our record against Philly the last 3+ years, where they consistently piss pound us every time we meet.

Like I said, I still hold a grudge from the playoffs. But, for better or worse he's wearing the birds on bat until he breaks down from age. We just have to hope he comes around. If nothing else, if his signing helps keep Pujols in a Cardinals uniform its money well spent, IMHO.

Very true, I would put Ricky Henderson in a Cards uni if it would help keep Albert around.

Guess I won't make any more predictions. The offense on this team worries me alot. They leave way too many men on base and rely on the long ball for much of their scoring. Guess they mirror their hitting coach. Cue DJ's left nut to come on here and berate me for McGwire's awsome .286 average with RISP or that he only struck out 20 percent of official at bats in those situations or his unmatched 6 100-RBI seasons (it was 7 btw).

We were able to get away with it last night against a poor Pirates team. It killed us against the Phillies and will do so in the playoffs if not fixed.

'Hamas' Jenkins 05-08-2010 07:08 PM

That was ****ing criminally stupid.

Have Holliday lead off the inning instead of with someone on, on which he has to leg it out, and then pull him once he gets OB.

BigRedChief 05-08-2010 07:39 PM

It's clear that our issue is the hitters are expanding the strike zone. Even Pujols. You can't blame that on McGuire.

'Hamas' Jenkins 05-08-2010 07:53 PM

That pitch that Pujols K'd on was nasty. He generally presses in situations like this, though.

Our biggest problem isn't our hitters expanding the zone, it's the fact that we have 3 guaranteed outs every time pitchers go through the order, and it's nigh impossible to put together consistent offense like that.

Brendan Ryan is a defensive replacement masquerading as an everyday SS.

Skip Schumaker is a AAAA utility player.

Combine that with the fact that we have no threats from the bench, save for Felipe (and Stavinoha, I guess) and you have what you have.

This team cannot mount consistent offense until we get at least 1 WAR production from our middle infielders.

Ryan and Shu are not .190 hitters. They are hitting .190 because they are expanding their zones. Trying to get out of their slumps in one at bat.

Ludwick
Pujols
holliday
Rasmus
Freese
Molina

Are as good as anyone else's in MLB. That right there should be good enough to get wins. Put our pitching in the mix.....We are underperforming. We can only get better. We still have the biggest lead in any division in the NL. We have the 2nd best record in the NL. We won't keep hitting like this.

Yep. Not having a catcher that is an offensive liability or a corner OF that can't hit for power makes it fine to not have much power from the middle infield. Still it will be nice to have lopez back.

Marcellus 05-09-2010 02:24 PM

We are going to win the Central division (barring multiple injuries) easily. Our hitters just need to be clicking in September/October. We have the starting pitching to hang with the Phillies and the Yankees in a playoff series. our defense is good enough to hang. It's the hitting that will make or break us in the playoffs.

It's always good when you can compliment your putrid hitting with awful, disinterested fielding.

Lopez needs to be starting for this team. Be it SS or 2b, I don't really care. But these two chuckleheads we have on the middle infield right now are not getting it done.

Somebody needs to remind Brendan Ryan that he still has an option left and if JJ Hardy can get a ticket to AAA, so can he.

When Lopez gets back, they should send Stavinoah down.

Over the next 12 games, tell Greene, Lopez, Skip and Ryan that they'll get 6 starts each -- whoever earns a job can keep it.

You know Lopez will get one, he's easily the best IFer on the roster. Hopefully Ryan will wake the **** up, realize he's not some flake role-player anymore and start acting like it.

This 'free spirit' shit was fine when he was just a bench player, but he's the starting shortstop for a club with title aspirations. There's no more critical position in baseball and this flighty little **** needs to get that into that ADD addled brain of his.

He's actually looked pretty good when it matters. He's the anti-Holliday. Put him into a situation where the game's looking over, and he's probably going to pour gas on the fire.

Give him a game with a lead and he's actually be very good this year.

Sure, they were only down 1, but did anyone actually think the Cardinals were scoring in the 9th? That game was over once Brendan Ryan decided it was more important to look good than play well.

'Big league.'

Skip got his money and knows he's his managers pet project. He can suck as much dick as he wants and he's still starting.

Ryan has been acting bulletproof all season. He survived Khalil Greene and doesn't think Flip will get a shot at his gig.

Ryan and Skip are what you get when career minor leaguers don't have someone pressing them. If they don't use every single bit of talent they have, they're just not major league caliber. Without someone pushing them, they don't give it their all and they'll play like minor leaguers.
