On the one hand, losing to Princeton is a very Mizzou thing. OTOH, if you had told me before the season that they would finish fourth in the SEC and win a tournament game, I would’ve been overjoyed

Pepe Silvia 03-18-2023 05:58 PM

They didn’t even try tonight.

Outplayed in every phase. Princeton was by far the better team today and deserves the win. Nothing from Hodge, Diarra played well for 2 minutes then didn’t guard anyone or block out the rest of the game. Carter was the only guy who showed up.

Still a great season, looking forward to next season.

I'm excited about next year. Gates started with basically nothing and went this far with a bunch of mid major transfers. The future looks good.

DJ's left nut 03-18-2023 06:20 PM

Man.

Mizzou saw that '15' and just flat ****ing didn't show up.

It wasn't even a 'man, those guys were hot' or 'man, we just couldn't finish'

They tried. We didn't. Got doubled up on the glass by a team that doesn't have a size or athleticism advantage. Did we get a single second chance bucket? Did we keep them under 20?

It was just a completely lifeless performance and it started from the opening tip when Princeton was just blowing past the defense without making a move or setting a screen. Lazy lazy lazy lazy ass basketball and these guys should hang their ****ing heads.

It ruins the entire season for me. Many of these are going to be 1 and done guys and all I'll ever remember them for is ****ing putting a stamp on an NCAA tournament game.

I just cannot forgive that.

duncan_idaho 03-18-2023 06:22 PM

Tough way for the season to end, but it was a fun one.

Top 4 conference finish, conference tournament semis, won a game in the tournament.

It's a building block for the team and program and that's how I'll look at it.

If Kobe Brown comes back like I think he will, next year will be a lot of fun.

I also gained so much confidence in Gates. Keep in mind that this team accomplished all of this despite not getting much contribution from Isaiah Mosely and Jamorrion Sharp deciding to stay at Western Kentucky (because Stansbury begged him to come back and help him not get fired, then got fired anyway because he sucks).

Add a better option than Gholston for late in the shot clock shot creation and a defensive and rebounding dynamo in the middle and this team is excellent.

His vision for how to bring this together was excellent. Some bad breaks left it short of what it could have been.

Nothing at all to hang heads in shame. Looks like Mizzou got a mighty fine coach recruit some length and defense and play with anyone. Hand it to Princeton they did everything right and I hope they keep it going.

HS recruiting class is:

6-11 with 7-3 wingspan
6-9 wth 7 wingspan
6-5/220 power wing (Not sure on his wingspan, but he's built like a tank)
6-2 with 6-6 wingspan

They're also in the running on a 6-8 2024 kid who is considering a reclassification to 2023 who is lengthy and athletic.

They're going to be a lot longer and more athletic. Aidan Shaw will offer some of that, too.

Gates first big test will be if he can land Aaron Rowe. That's the first big in-state recruit coming up. 23 and 24 he can get a pass for no Missouri kids. Those are both dogshit recruiting talent wise in-state. There is like no talent in either cities. But Rowe in 25 will be the big one, he is a Como kid as well.

Princeton was not lucky in that game. They probably should have scored 100 points. That was a complete and total ass-whipping that was much worse than the score indicated. They completely dissected Mizzou on every offensive possession, and Mizzou could never break them down in the half court. They looked like a mid-level SOCON team on offense --no ball movement, forced threes, and they kept giving Princeton the single most efficient look in basketball on every possession--a wide open corner three.

Princeton played well, but Mizzou probably would have lost to anyone else who played today, including Furman. That was a heinous performance.

I never expected to make the tourney this year, but holy shit if we could have just showed up against Princeton and won, then we had a legit shot at an elite 8 appearance and only would have had to play a 10, 15, and a 6 to get there. That's a real kick in the nuts lol.

Absolutely this. It sucked getting knocked out by a 15 seed, but they clearly outplayed both teams that they beat. They deserve to be there.

Fun fact, due to prior commitments, I missed out on watching both tourney games.

Regarding this season, I've watched more Mizzou basketball this year than the last 5 combined. They were a blast to watch and I'm looking forward to seeing what Gates can do with next year's squad.

I'll take getting beat by a 15 seed that had just taken out a 2 seed over being the 2 seed losing in round 1 to them or being the one seed being taken out a 16 seed and another by an 8 seed. Those teams had high expectations coming into the season and choked. Mizzou had no such expectations. Next year, and coming years, the expectations will be higher. But this year, I'm just glad that we got to the tournament and won a game. Much like when Andy Reid came to town following a 2-14 season. Year one, I was thrilled just to get to the playoffs. It was a process and he eventually got us on top. Give Gates time to see where he can take the Tigers. Year one was a great step in the right direction.

raybec 4 03-20-2023 04:54 PM

They just played the best basketball we've seen from a Mizzou team in over a decade. I get that the loss absolutely sucked but there's a lot to look forward to going forward.

ChiefsCountry 03-21-2023 08:14 PM

Sharp would be interesting get for Mizzou. He never was healthy at Missouri State. If he was healthy, we probably win the Valley with him and Mosley. He is a bootheel kid and his coach who is now at Austin Peay is from the neighboring town. So I wouldn't be surprised he follows him there. But if healthy, he would fit Gates' style of play.

duncan_idaho 03-27-2023 04:50 PM

The Tigers landed John Tonje from Colorado State today. 6-4 wing who can shoot it. Compared to Gholson/Hodge, more of a shooter than Gholston, more of a slasher than Hodge. Little more quickness/bounce than either.

If Mosely comes back, which is a possibility, he and Tonje would be a nice set of wings to rely on.

How could you have any faith in Mosley knowing that at any moment he could decide again to not play, seems like a huge waste of a scholarship. I don’t know what his problem was, but with limited scholarships you can’t just keep a guy on scholarship who may or may not choose to play.

I don't have much interest in Love at all. He's incredibly inefficient. If Gates wants him, I'll trust it (he has earned that), but he hasn't been good.

I've always been a fan of a particular scouting statement: "Once you demonstrate a skill, you own that skill until age or injury takes it away..."

2 years ago Love demonstrated he COULD shoot from range. This year he demonstrated he COULD score fairly well from inside the arc.

What he's never done is show he can do BOTH at the same time. But if he owns both skills and neither age nor injury have taken them away, wouldn't it stand to reason that there's at least a non-zero chance he could combine them?

He was just a better player as a Sophomore than he was this year. But he did develop in a couple areas and if can take that sophomore level and add where he improved as a jr, that's a genuinely excellent ballplayer.

You think he’d pay his own way? If so by all means keep him around. I did state I don’t know exactly what his issue is, whether mental health or family issues or whatever it is. I empathize with him for that, but now more than ever with NIL it’s become abundantly clear this is a business. I just don’t see how you hold one of 13 scholarships for a player who you cannot count on, if he would need a scholarship to be on the team. Very few scholarships are available, and considering Mizzou is still targeting more players in the transfer portal, holding on to Mosley could mean asking another player to transfer away. I don’t think that is right.

What an absolute bitch. He will best be remembered for standing under the basket as he watched one Princeton player pass it to an unguarded guy spotted up at the corner and then made a less than half assed effort to block the shot. He did this multiple times and the guy didn't miss.

The only thing that sucks is that he's the only guy with some height, but seems like we're interested in adding alot more of that.

I'm dreaming of Mizzou getting Kel'el Ware. That'd be one hell of an acquisition.

He blocked 2 consecutive shots in the 1st half of the Princeton game and then didn't guard anyone or block anyone out the rest of the game. Gates will replace him with someone much better.

As for Diarra - eh, just never was all that impressed by him. He looked like he'd peak as a Justin Gage sort of energy forward.

If he entered the portal after a bunch of upper classmen previously ahead of him graduated, that suggests that perhaps Gates let him know he was probably due to get layered again.

I just can't imagine him leaving if a path to playing time opened up ahead of him for a team he experienced success with.

First thing that entered my mind after I saw the news.

I was kinda wondering if that was the case, but I wasn't sure.

Kim English apparently kept a Providence player out of the transfer portal by beating him 1-on-1:

I love Kim English. I wanted him so bad before we got Gates, but knowing what I know now about Gates, I think we took the best guy available.

There is a ton of big talent in the portal this year. I'm hoping they don't actually get love and can get one or 2 of the really tall dudes and then add a scorer.

Max Abmas - Oral Roberts - Big time 3 point shooter and is 16th in made 3 pointers. Shoots 38.8% for his career from 3.

LJ Cryer - Baylor - Another big time 3 point shooter. He is 42.5% from 3 in his career and hit 41.5% last year on 6.2 threes per game. Also has become a very good FT shooter and made 59/66 last year.

Probably won't get either of those 2. I'm hoping we can get one top 10 guy and a couple top 30 guys. Also really hoping Brown stays and Mosely gets his mind right.

Well, dlphg9 (I know a mizzou.edu email address when I see one), you've got your wish. Best wishes to Caleb at Michigan:

Could also be a Truman address; they used to use the same naming convention...

Truman used letters then four digits back in the day

C was the Freshman class of 2000

C2153, for example.

Well shit...I think you're right.

The email I'm thinking of was actually my Mizzou email now that I think about it...

Carry on, nothing to see here....

I can't actually give mine away because I'd be doxxing myself. They ported my old Mizzou student email over when I started working for the health system, so all my colleagues are lastnamefirst@health.missouri edu and I'm an alphanumeric stew.

I finished there in 2010 and can't access my account any longer. It's locked, but if I contacted an admin I'd probably get access to it again. It was my go to email.

blake5676 04-08-2023 05:34 AM

bmoee4 checking in! I remember I didn’t use my email for like 3 months after leaving Mizzou and it was locked pretty quickly. I was irritated I had to switch back to hotmail for a few years before I finally got on the Gmail train. I hadn’t thought about those 6 digits for quite awhile!
