Chief Concerns: Desmond Bailey – @CCWriterDez
“#90, came over from the Jags. Guy is the talk of camp. He’s looking unstoppable out there!“
That was the text I got from Chief Concerns’ Stephen Brown this morning regarding Chiefs DE Austen Lane whom the team claimed in early June after he was waived by the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Brown, the founder of this site, has been front and center at all the team’s activities this year. He saturates Chief Concern’s facebook page with daily player quotes, practice pictures and videos to help bring fans up close and personal with the Chiefs’ preparations for the season. In short, when Brown says somebody is beasting……they are beasting.
Lane, at 6-foot-6 and 265 pounds, has been reportedly blowing up Chiefs OL in practice – Branden Albert, Eric Fisher, Donald Stephenson…..everybody.
In the 2010 NFL draft, Lane was a 5th-round selection of the Jaguars out of Murray State where he amassed 29 sacks and 55 tackles for loss as a 40-game starter. His departure in the fifth round marked the earliest a Murray State player had ever been drafted.
Over the course of his three seasons with the Jaguars, Lane compiled 66 tackles, 3 sacks, and one forced fumble in 17 starts. His Jacksonville career was otherwise plagued with injuries that kept him from the field and hindered his development.
Now, in Kansas City, Lane is apparently experiencing a resurgence in his play so far in camp. Sometimes it takes small-school prospects a few years to get acclimated to the pro-level of play. Therefore, Lane is due. If he stays healthy and is able to carry his dominance into games, the Chiefs will have added another beast to their front-7.
