Totally shi***. I think one thing that I haven't seen mentioned yet, but in most places like one I served at a few years ago the waiters have to tip out other team members based on a percentage of your sales. If this exact same scenario happened at a place I used to work at the server would have just paid 6 dollars to wait on that "single mother" because that is what cut of the tip the host, bartender, and kitchen would have received on that $140 bill alone. Even though that tip says zero, at the place I used to work at the server would have actually made negative 6 dollars on that table because that's how much the waiter would have had to tip out team members on that tab alone. In general it usually evens out by the end of the night because you have a few really good tips and a few really bad ones with everything else falling in the middle, but it doesn't always work out that way. If you don't leave a tip, the server technically paid to wait on you at my old job.

yup. At the restaurant I worked at, the servers tip out bussers, bar and expo's. The standard was 10% to bussers, 10% to expo, 15% to bar. Based on what they made for the night. That's pretty typical for a restaurant actually. It's pretty fascist shit if you ask me. The company gets all of this money for sales and pays more than half of their staff $2/hr. That means they are very very expendable and I had to fire so many people for little things because it was corporate hell. Very successful business, the company founder is extremely rich. Extremely.

She's entitled not to tip the server. She should've exercised that right quietly and gone about her business.

$14 or $140 she's still not obligated to tip the server.
15% of that total is about $20. Are you certain she had $158?
Are you certain that had she tipped a significantly lower percentage of the bill that the server would've been satisfied?

On that point, we agree.

I agree you're not obligated to tip anyone. The "obligation" isn't really what I'm talking about here.

It's the fact that this woman didn't tip because she's playing the poor single mother card..literally..wrote it out on the recpt. And the ONLY reason it was written on the recpt was to maybe the waitress in some ridiculous way just might show some sympathy of where this woman is coming from??? But then again....so poor....but yet a $140 tab?

So really the question is why is this customer spending $140 on a meal if she's just a "poor single mother" ???

I can't remember the last time I've ever spent that much money on a restaurant tab, and I've paid for multiple people before.

My tip money went to them. So in this case, I would've had to pay about 5.50 to wait on their asses. Frequently my hourly would be less than my tipshare for the day. So in essence, I paid to pick up those tables. Total bullshit...

Just a reminder for anyone not bothering to read the thread responses.

I always tip the good ones well so I get good service when I come back. I walk into my local bar and my beer is on the way no matter how busy they are. I once compensated my bartender for a lack of a tip on a huge group the manager helped clear the table and the receipt was throw out by accident at least a $20 tip, as I left she was screaming my name as I made up for it.

Has Hootie chimed in yet? He usually throws in a "Black people don't tip" comment in these threads.

Damn right, a few of the people in this thread deserve the hell out of this.
