I don;t understand the appeal of this. By the time a thread gets several pages long the original post is often meaningless.

Sometimes when I'm leery of a thread topic, I wait for it to percolate for a page or so then start with the header, then skim a sense of what the conversation has devolved into. If it doesn't hold my interest at that point, I don't bother with going further back to follow the convo comprehensively.
