Excellent news today. He's got a long road to recovery, but hopefully this means that playing again isn't out of the question.

Fish 01-05-2023 11:13 AM

Can't wait until he wakes up and finds out about his GoFundMe. That should make him smile.

Demonpenz 01-05-2023 11:14 AM

if the bills win the superbowl they should give all the medical staff that handled him rings

At the risk of being insensitive, it's gonna be kind of a weird thing to deal with. I'm guessing they didn't set the GoFundMe up to go directly into any formal foundation (they were just doing a little $2500 toy drive while he was in college), so I think technically we've all donated $7m to him personally, which is roughly double his entire NFL contract (which isn't even guaranteed). ROFL

As KCUnited mentioned earlier, I hope there are some controls in place or that they'll put them in place pretty quickly. But whatever, that's certainly the least of their worries right now, and I couldn't really care less personally regardless of what happens to it.

EDIT:

I dug around a bit, and this article is pretty informative. In short, there IS a formally-registered foundation, and GoFundMe also has some controls in place. Good to know.

Damar Hamlins toy drive retirement fund.

DenverChief 01-05-2023 12:01 PM

I was listening to the radio last night and they were talking about how it's more than just overcoming the physical injuries. There is a mental aspect that goes into recovering from injuries and some are more difficult than others. This particular injury is going to take quite a bit of psychological support for him to overcome. Of course, everyone is different, but this level is trauma is probably going to be in the back of his head for a while - what if it happens again - and this all resonates with me as a veteran. This really is akin to being in an IED explosion and waking up in a hospital with assorted injuries. The PTSD of it will need to be delt with and he may never fully recover. I hope he has the strength and support to get back on the field.

I'm not sure he could do that directly. The GoFundMe was set up for a toy drive, and it is certainly not clear that these donations have been made to further that effort, as opposed to helping a man hit with a catastrophic injury. However, he could set up a 401(c) foundation where the mission is to provide toys and other benefits to children, where he is the CEO drawing a salary that would make him comfortable for life.

If Damar can't play again he will have a hefty injury settlement.

I could be wrong, but I'm pretty sure injury settlements are more for allowing a team to cut a player and save on the salary cap while giving the player a portion of the salary they would have earned. It wouldn't come anywhere close to his full contract value of ~$3.5m.

But that said, I hope he makes a full recovery and is able to get a nice, fat contract in a few years. He seemed to be solidifying a role.

It's good to hear the very positive updates on Damar this morning. I hope he continues to make strong improvements as the days go by.
