This is the only reason I give a damn about the trade at all. I think it's funny how bad the Magic got burned.

The Magic had no other option for how they wanted to build their roster. They didnt want a great player, They want to suck so bad for a few years, so they can draft 1-5. Then they use their late ones, and hopefully they hit on someone decent.

Its not really a bad strategy if they pick the right lottery pick players the next few years.

mcaj22 08-10-2012 03:55 AM

yea but that has to be terrible for your fanbase/market. How do you get people to buy tickets when you are basically saying you want to suck on purpose to pick from 1 to 5 for a few years

and even then, I read that these first round picks are PROTECTED PICKS. So it's not like they will ever get lottery talent out of these picks lol

True but the lottery picks will be their own picks. The three other first rounders they acquired are just gravy. You can still get good players in the mid to late first. The more I think about this the more I think its good for them im the long run. Plus I heard Duhon might be added to the trade (rumor...could be final now for all i know). He is another salary theyd like to shed.

Yeah it sucks for the fans for now but Id rather suck now and rebuild for the future rather than land Pau or Iguodola and be a 6/7 seed for 3 years.

it sucks, but thats how it has to be done. They werent going to get Pau Gasol and just be mediocre. It makes no sense to do that. Their GM is 33. He's gonna try to do it the way OKC did it. If it works out, then it s great, the fans will come back. Its only the real option they had.

Thats what MANY of us Chiefs fans wanted last year when we got off to a terrible start. We were like, **** it. Lets just suck so we can land Luck. I know i was in group. We stayed Mediocre and Cassel is going to hold this team back barring we have some kind of insane defense that could be considered one of the best ever. Thats what it takes to win if your qb isnt good. lol

the Talking Can 08-10-2012 05:13 AM

your own draft picks have nothing to do with the trade

you got a bunch of meh players, no star

you didn't get a lottery pick...you got protected picks that are most likely mid to low round

you got nothing, you didn't even get a much cap relief as the other deals offered...

i wouldn't have much faith in a rebuilding with a gm that incompetent

and good luck doing it the 'OKC way'....kind of like the Patriot way

and i fully support blowing up a team in the nba, but that doesn't excuse getting shit in a trade

you just need to draft Durant and Westbrook...that's all, should be easy

Al Bundy 08-10-2012 06:18 AM

The west is a 2 team race now, the Lakers and the Thunder.

Micjones 08-10-2012 06:22 AM

Talk about throwing down the gauntlet.
Lake Show gets Howard without losing Gasol?

The issue was, any team u trade Howard to isn't gonna have a lottery pick. Its hard to get a team involved in a three way trade that is gonna give up a lottery pick so LA can get Howard. Orlando was offered several deals and they were all shit. I'm just glad the storm is over and now they can start rebuilding.

lcarus 08-10-2012 08:07 AM

Also I would argue that the "OKC way" compared to the "Patriot way" is apples and oranges. The Patriot Way was getting lucky landing a HOF QB in the 6th round, pairing him with a great coach, and riding that duo to multiple SBs. The OKC way is the way that teams have to do it anyway, no matter what you call the method. Blow the team up and rebuild through the draft. At least OKC lost and rebuilt through lottery picks. As much as we talked about "sucking for Luck" last year, I think in the NBA it's even more of a given. You just can't compete without the next Kobe, Lebron, Howard, or Durant. Unless you're already a powerhouse or LA, NY, Boston, Miami, or Chicago, you aren't getting superstar players through free agency or trades.

Orlando tried to get Houston to take Duhon, Turkoglu and Richardson or Glen Davis. It's hard to get a team to take on all that crap AND Howard, AND still make it work with the cap. Could Hennigan have waited and gotten a better deal at the trade deadline? Maybe, but no matter what they weren't gonna get even close to fair value for a talent like Dwight Howard. Howard put the burden on them by opting into the last year of his contract and then almost immediately demanding a trade again. I don't get that but whatever. It's over now. Time to move on.

jd1020 08-10-2012 08:30 AM

I really don't understand why the Magic didn't want Gasol. I get that they are rebuilding and all but he's only got 2 years left on his contract and I would bet some team out there would love to trade for his expiring contract at the deadline next season.

Did you watch the Spurs lose 4 straight to the Thunder last year?

I'm hesitant to even call the Thunder a threat to LA. They've got Durant and Westbrook, but how effective is Westbrook going to be? He's not a consistent shooter and with Howard defending the rim it doesn't matter how fast he blows by Nash.

Amnorix 08-10-2012 10:09 AM

Crazy. Why do NBA GMs constantly just bend over for the Lakers? Isn't part of doing a good job running your team include NOT setting up a powerhouse that you can't beat for years to come?

How many "best in their generation" Centers have the Lakers had? It's nuts. From Mikan to Wilt to Kareem to Shaq to Howard.

Good thing I'm not that huge a B-Ball fan anymore. And people hate the Yankees. Yeesh.
