I think Veach was trying to trade up for Flowers but couldn't get in front of Baltimore at 22. Then I believe Veach switched onto Mazi Smith and tried getting him up till Jerry took him at 26 instead of trading with Veach. After that he stayed put till 31 and accepted the home town draft location last pick of the 1st round walk out.

What media guys said/suggested that?

Matt Derrick/Nick Jacobs, Nate Taylor has strongly suggested it, Pete Sweeney has mentioned it and Verderame said he would be shocked if we did it

Pretty much everyone thinks it’s gonna be a DL

Interesting. Honestly, hope they're right, I'm just not sold.

staylor26 04-03-2025 11:29 AM

How would you guys rank positions in terms of the likelihood that they're our first pick?

I'll start:

1. DE
2. DT
3. OT
4. RB
5T. S
5T. CB

Worthy, Rice, Kingsley, McDuffie

Veach has a list of guys and he goes after them

For sure, I get it. I just don't think Conerly is that guy.

kcbubb 04-03-2025 11:31 AM

Let’s look at the offensive linemen picked last year. Conerly probably compares to Troy Fautanu? What do you think Crow? Troy had great feet as well but was considered to be limited with strength to block the bull rush. From an injury standpoint and risk eval (not physically), Simmons probably compares to Mims. Simmons has more tape and less injuries overall than Mims but Simmons has the one big injury.

Joe Alt, Notre Dame | Los Angeles Chargers Round 1, Pick 5

Olu Fashanu, Penn State | New York Jets Round 1, Pick 7

JC Latham, Alabama | Tennessee Titans Round 1, Pick 11

Taliese Fuaga, Oregon State | New Orleans Saints Round 1, Pick 14

Amarius Mims, Georgia | Cincinnati Bengals Round 1, Pick 18

Troy Fautanu, Washington | Pittsburgh Steelers Round 1, Pick 20

Jordan Morgan, Arizona | Green Bay Packers Round 1, Pick 25

Tyler Guyton, Oklahoma | Dallas Cowboys Round 1, Pick 29

Because they've been in the AFC championship game every year since Mahomes became the starter and Veach was promoted to GM? Because they've appeared in 5 Super Bowls since 2018 and won 3 of them?

This fear that people have is just ****ing silly. And spoiled.

Certainly hope it isn't DE unless he's by far BPA. They've got enough bodies there, especially since Jones loves to pop out there whenever he fancies.

I just think that's where the value will line up and it's not a position that they will hesitate to draft for the future. Unless we draft a RB, I'm not sure that we're drafting a day 1 starter either way.

Not it isn't. By nearly every available metric and the eye test Mahomes has been regressing year to year and a huge part of that is shoddy LT play.

It's still nothing to panic about. Teams that panic make rash moves and that never works.

There's no reason to get so emotionally invested it's a football game.

Just watch Simmons move. This type of movement with that strength and size does not come along in the back half of the first. Just watch 71. In order to accurately evaluate the risk/reward, you need to see how high his ceiling is. Eric Fisher couldn’t move like this. Warning, if oline play gives you hard on, get ready. Feet, punch, hand usage, agility, strength and power; Simmons has it all.

I think we all will look back in 5 years and see that Simmons has become the best tackle in the draft.

I could see Veach going up to #19 with Seattle for Simmons even. Veach LOVES pick swaps and something like this would be right up his alley.

Seattle gets:
#31
2026 1st
#66

Chiefs get:
#18-Simmons
#52

Look at how the bengals are treating burrow. I’m not saying I agree with their strategy but they have or will pay two top WRs. They drafted Mims in the 1st last year. They signed OBJ to play LT a couple years back. The bengals are making sure to take care of burrow. I’m not saying that we need to go that crazy but we need to Invest in protecting PM. And it’s not super risky to draft Simmons, IMO, even if he can’t play LT, we need competition at RG. We will need a RT next year and we need competition across the line, except center. We just traded our best lineman in Thuney. We need oline depth. Even if Simmons fails at LT, he’s played G and RT. Don’t get me wrong, I like Simmons bc I believe he could our LT of the future and possibly start by the playoffs. It’s a great fit of need vs where he’s available, assuming medicals check out. Last years draft shows that with Mims going 18.

Bengals can't even make the playoffs in a 14 team field. They're not the standard I'd point to.

The point is that the bengals are taking care of the most important person in the franchise. Burrow has to be happy with the front office. Would PM say that the chiefs have taken care of him? He’s clearly underpaid. He’s been a trooper and it’s a good time to reward him with some protection in a LT.
