they're quoting a random person... Judging by the map I've seen with approximate boundaries of the damage, I'd say about 35-45% of the town has been destroyed.

Link by chance?

Morons are coming out of the woodwork by making comments on the Facebook page, first someone dissing Obama after he sent his condolences and then someone bitching about Spanish speakers because of a likewise related post.

Got taken down, but if you look on Google maps, go from Maiden Lane on the west side of town. Then draw a swath between 32nd and 20th streets with the line bending northeast over 20th street after crossing Main, then up over 15th street towards 7th. That's a rough estimate of the footprint the tornado left.

50k in city limits. The larger number is Webb City, Carl, maybe Carthage included. But I'd wager there could be homeless in the thousands.

Did Carthage get hit - or only Stright-Line-Winds?

Carthage may have gotten storm damage, but I don't think the tornado went that far north.

Seriously, what in the BLUE **** are you talking about?! You must just be batshit crazy. So maybe I shouldn't even ask.

For those in the area that want to help..

Quote:

Joplin, MO Tornado Recovery
Please DO NOT SELF DEPLOY to Joplin. The area is using their emergency response plan that is in place & it is working. They cannot manage spontaneous volunteers at this time. Please call 2-1-1 (800.427.4626) to let them know if you are interested in volunteering & they will provide a coordinated effort to manage volunteers. Currently, 2-1-1 is experiencing a high call volume, so it may take a bit to get through.

working your way back toward Pittsburg, I remember being in several weather threatening sit's. growing up - The whole side of my dads' side of the family came from the area, originally.

I am so sorry to hear about this. Man, I spent a lot of time in Joplin while growing up and my mom still visits every Friday for shopping. We really are thinking about and praying for you all.
