Sub packages were being used when I played football for the University of Louisville in the 70s. Nothing new there. Look at Bob Sutton (example). The game hasn't passed him by. His philosophy has passed HIM by. He refuses to leave what doesn't work (putting LBs 30 yards down the field in coverage when they aren't fast enough to be doing that) and has forgotten that with an attacking defense - the offense is always on the back foot. If Chuckie comes out attacking - watch what happens. QBs will be running for their lives all day. If a QB is constantly having to leave the pocket (especially BEFORE he is ready) - he is doomed and we all know it. I have watched game after game, season after season (since Sutton came) and I can call the EXACT Defense that will be called from one play to the next. If I (an old man) can do that - what do you suppose every other team in the NFL is doing? Football has always been (and will always be) a simple game of Chess. The board doesn't change. The field doesn't change. Sometimes, it pays to go "back to the future"…if you know what I mean…. Hell, I want Chuckie to fall flat on his face - but until the NFL figures out what he is doing from one week to the next - it won't happen. So, at least for this year, odds are, he is safe. But by next year, the "computer models" will be all over him… THAT is what has changed about the NFL. |
Since all you guys are so hung up on taking the game back to 1998, What exactly do you think has changed with the exception of the over sensitive uber greed of the game?

Honestly - if the game had changed much over the years - how do you suppose that there are (for the most part) only 2 base defenses? Suttle changes, granted, but it is still, "Cover your man and I'll cover mine". I WILL give you the idea that the officiating has gone to shit. Hell, when you think about it - there were less "career ending" injuries BEFORE all these changes in officiating went into effect - most, (my opinion), is nothing more than giving the Zebra guys Television time… Ed Hochuli and his "guns" were talked about every game. That part of it is screwed up. LMAO I want to go back to the days when the officials were there to break up fights and walk off the 10 yard penalties while holding the ball out at arms length. :) |

The Raiders have a Gruden problem

The Silver and Black Today radio show became Raider Nation’s Sunday morning therapy session as we discussed the big news of the Khalil Mack trade and what it means for the Raiders moving forward. Former NFL general manager and player personnel executive Michael Lombardi of The Athletic joined us to give us his insight on why the deal is better for the Raiders than most think. He also stated it was the right move if Jon Gruden is following a philosophy similar to Bill Belichick in New England. |

The players are even different in this era of football than 1998. Doesn’t take an expert to notice these changes

LMAO Yeah, the Belicheck method only works because Belicheck has the greatest QB of all time on the offensive side of the ball. He can afford to let lower caliber players that want too much money go, like Collins. Mack isn't that player. I'm pretty sure if Mack was on the Patriots he would've signed the lucrative extension. Belicheck has proven in the past with players like Revis if you're a generational talent he'll pay you.
